The SANAD study of effectiveness of carbamazepine, gabapentin, lamotrigine, oxcarbazepine, or topiramate for treatment of partial epilepsy: an unblinded randomised controlled trial
Anthony G Marson,Asya M Al-Kharusi,Muna Alwaidh,Richard Appleton,Gus A. Baker,David Chadwick,Celia Cramp,Oliver C Cockerell,PN Cooper,Julie Doughty,Barbara Eaton,Carrol Gamble,Peter Goulding,Stephen Howell,Adrian Hughes,Margaret Jackson,Ann Jacoby,Mark Kellett,G. R. Lawson,John Paul Leach,Paola Nicolaides,Richard C. Roberts,Phil Shackley,Jing Shen,David F. Smith,Philip E. M. Smith,Catrin Tudur Smith,Alessandra Vanoli,Paula R Williamson +28 more
TL;DR: Lamotrigine is clinically better than carbamazepine, the standard drug treatment, for time to treatment failure outcomes and is therefore a cost-effective alternative for patients diagnosed with partial onset seizures.
Journal ArticleDOI
The SANAD study of effectiveness of valproate, lamotrigine, or topiramate for generalised and unclassifiable epilepsy: an unblinded randomised controlled trial.
Anthony G Marson,Asya M Al-Kharusi,Muna Alwaidh,Richard Appleton,Gus A. TL;DR: Valproate is better tolerated than topiramate and more efficacious than lamotrigine, and should remain the drug of first choice for many patients with generalised and unclassified epilepsies, and because of known potential adverse effects of valproate during pregnancy, the benefits for seizure control in women of childbearing years should be considered.

TL;DR: The majority of patients with epilepsy maintain seizure control during pregnancy, and the apparently higher risk of seizures among women treated with ox carbazepine and the more frequent increases in drug load in the oxcarbazepines and lamotrigine cohorts prompts further studies on relationships with pharmacokinetic changes.

Seizure risk from cavernous or arteriovenous malformations: Prospective population-based study
Colin B. Josephson,John Paul Leach,Rory R. Duncan,Richard C. Roberts,Carl Counsell,R. Al-Shahi Salman +5 more
TL;DR: AVM-related ICH confers a significantly higher risk of a first-ever seizure compared to CMs or incidental AVMs, and adults with a CM have a high risk of epilepsy after a first ever seizure but achieve seizure freedom as frequently as those with epilepsy due to an AVM.
