Journal ArticleDOI
Roux-en-Y gastric bypass vs intensive medical management for the control of type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia: The diabetes surgery study randomized clinical trial
Sayeed Ikramuddin,Judith Korner,Wei Jei Lee,John E. Connett,William B. Inabnet,Charles J. Billington,Avis J. Thomas,Daniel B. Leslie,Keong Chong,Robert W. Jeffery,Leaque Ahmed,Adrian Vella,Lee-Ming Chuang,Marc Bessler,Michael G. Sarr,James M. Swain,Patricia S. Laqua,Michael D. Jensen,John P. Bantle +18 more
TL;DR: Adding gastric bypass surgery to lifestyle and medical management was associated with a greater likelihood of achieving the composite goal of HbA1c less than 7.0%, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol less than 100 mg/dL, and systolic blood pressure less than 130 mm Hg.
Journal ArticleDOI
Effects of Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery on fasting and postprandial concentrations of plasma ghrelin, peptide YY, and insulin.
Judith Korner,Marc Bessler,L. J. Cirilo,Irene M. Conwell,Amna Daud,Nancy Restuccia,Sharon L. Wardlaw +6 more
TL;DR: The absence of a compensatory increase in ghrelin concentrations that usually occurs with diet-induced weight loss, and the exaggerated postprandial PYY response after RYGBP, may contribute to weight loss and to the ability of an individual to maintain weight loss after this surgical procedure.
Journal ArticleDOI
Joint international consensus statement for ending stigma of obesity.
Francesco Rubino,Francesco Rubino,Rebecca M. Puhl,David E. Cummings,Robert H. Eckel,Donna H. Ryan,Jeffrey I. Mechanick,Jeffrey I. Mechanick,Joe Nadglowski,Ximena Ramos Salas,Phillip R. Schauer,Douglas Twenefour,Caroline M. Apovian,Caroline M. Apovian,Louis J. Aronne,Rachel L. Batterham,Rachel L. Batterham,Hans Rudolph Berthoud,Camilo Boza,Luca Busetto,Dror Dicker,Mary de Groot,Dan Eisenberg,Stuart W. Flint,Terry T.-K. Huang,Lee M. Kaplan,John P. Kirwan,Judith Korner,Theodore K. Kyle,Blandine Laferrère,Carel W. le Roux,La Shawn McIver,Geltrude Mingrone,Geltrude Mingrone,Patricia M. Nece,Tirissa J. Reid,Ann M. Rogers,Michael Rosenbaum,Randy J. Seeley,Antonio J. Torres,John B. Dixon +40 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a multidisciplinary group of international experts, including representatives of scientific organizations, reviewed available evidence on the causes and harms of weight stigma and, using a modified Delphi process, developed a joint consensus statement with recommendations to eliminate weight bias.
Journal ArticleDOI
Adipose tissue macrophages promote myelopoiesis and monocytosis in obesity
Prabhakara R Nagareddy,Michael J Kraakman,Seth L. Masters,Roslynn A. Stirzaker,Darren J. Gorman,Ryan W. Grant,Dragana Dragoljevic,Eun Shil Hong,Ahmed Abdel-Latif,Susan S. Smyth,Sung Hee Choi,Judith Korner,Karin E. Bornfeldt,Edward A. Fisher,Vishwa Deep Dixit,Alan R. Tall,Ira J. Goldberg,Andrew J. Murphy,Andrew J. Murphy,Andrew J. Murphy +19 more
TL;DR: A positive feedback loop between ATMs and BM myeloid progenitors is uncovered and inhibition of TLR4 ligands or the NLRP3-IL-1β signaling axis could reduce AT inflammation and insulin resistance in obesity.
Journal ArticleDOI
Exaggerated glucagon-like peptide-1 and blunted glucose-dependent insulinotropic peptide secretion are associated with Roux-en-Y gastric bypass but not adjustable gastric banding
TL;DR: Exaggerated postprandial GLP-1 and blunted glucose-dependent insulinotropic peptide secretion after RYGB might contribute to the greater weight loss and improved glucose homeostasis compared with BND.
