Journal ArticleDOI
Climate change and the permafrost carbon feedback
Edward A. G. Schuur,A. D. McGuire,Christina Schädel,Christina Schädel,Guido Grosse,Jennifer W. Harden,Daniel J. Hayes,Gustaf Hugelius,Charles D. Koven,Peter Kuhry,David M. Lawrence,Susan M. Natali,David Olefeldt,Vladimir E. Romanovsky,Kevin Schaefer,Merritt R. Turetsky,Claire C. Treat,Jorien E. Vonk +17 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors find that current evidence suggests a gradual and prolonged release of greenhouse gas emissions in a warming climate and present a research strategy with which to target poorly understood aspects of permafrost carbon dynamics.
Journal ArticleDOI
Climate policy implications of nonlinear decline of Arctic land permafrost and other cryosphere elements
Dmitry Yumashev,Chris Hope,Kevin Schaefer,Kathrin Riemann-Campe,Fernando Iglesias-Suarez,Fernando Iglesias-Suarez,Elchin Jafarov,Elchin Jafarov,Eleanor J. Burke,Paul Young,Yasin Elshorbany,Gail Whiteman +11 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors explored nonlinear transitions in the Arctic feedbacks and their subsequent impacts on the global climate and economy under the Paris Agreement scenarios, and found an important contribution to warming which leads to additional economic losses from climate change.
Journal ArticleDOI
Terrestrial biosphere models need better representation of vegetation phenology: results from the North American Carbon Program Site Synthesis
Andrew D. Richardson,Ryan S. Anderson,M. Altaf Arain,Alan G. Barr,Gil Bohrer,Guangsheng Chen,Jing M. Chen,Philippe Ciais,Kenneth J. Davis,Ankur R. Desai,Michael Dietze,Danilo Dragoni,S. R. Garrity,Christopher M. Gough,Robert F. Grant,David Y. Hollinger,Hank A. Margolis,Harry McCaughey,Mirco Migliavacca,Russell K. Monson,J. William Munger,Benjamin Poulter,Brett Raczka,Daniel M. Ricciuto,A. K. Sahoo,Kevin Schaefer,Hanqin Tian,Rodrigo Vargas,Hans Verbeeck,Jingfeng Xiao,Yongkang Xue +30 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors evaluate the representation of phenology, and the associated seasonality of ecosystem-scale CO2 exchange, in 14 models participating in the North American Carbon Program Site Synthesis.
Journal ArticleDOI
Global patterns of drought recovery
Christopher R. Schwalm,Christopher R. Schwalm,William R. L. Anderegg,Anna M. Michalak,Joshua B. Fisher,Franco Biondi,George W. Koch,Marcy E. Litvak,Kiona Ogle,John D. Shaw,Adam Wolf,Deborah N. Huntzinger,Kevin Schaefer,Robert B. Cook,Yaxing Wei,Yuanyuan Fang,Daniel J. Hayes,Maoyi Huang,Atul K. Jain,Hanqin Tian +19 more
TL;DR: This analysis of three independent datasets of gross primary productivity shows that, across diverse ecosystems, drought recovery times are strongly associated with climate and carbon cycle dynamics, with biodiversity and CO2 fertilization as secondary factors.
Journal ArticleDOI
Amount and timing of permafrost carbon release in response to climate warming
TL;DR: In this article, the authors use surface weather from three global climate models based on the moderate warming, A1B Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change emissions scenario and the SiBCASA land surface model to estimate the strength and timing of the positive permafrost carbon feedback (PCF) and associated uncertainty.
