Journal ArticleDOI
Nonuniform loss of muscle strength and atrophy during bed rest: a systematic review.
TL;DR: In this article, the authors contributed to the characterization of muscle loss and weakness processes reflected by a logarithmic decline in muscle strength induced by chronic bed rest in acute short-term hospitalization.
Journal ArticleDOI
Bouncing Back! Counteracting Muscle Aging With Plyometric Muscle Loading.
Martino V. Franchi,Elena Monti,Austin Carter,Jonathan I. Quinlan,Philip J. J. Herrod,Neil D. Reeves,Marco Narici +6 more
TL;DR: The current study shows that trampoline-based plyometric training is an effective intervention producing a rapid increase in muscle mass and power in both young and older individuals.
Journal ArticleDOI
Age-related alterations in muscle architecture are a signature of sarcopenia: the ultrasound sarcopenia index.
Marco Narici,Jamie S. McPhee,Maria Conte,Martino V. Franchi,Kyle W. Mitchell,Sara Tagliaferri,Elena Monti,Giuseppe Marcolin,Philip J. Atherton,Kenneth Smith,Bethan E. Phillips,Jonathan N. Lund,Claudio Franceschi,Marcello Maggio,Gillian Butler-Browne +14 more
TL;DR: In this article, an ultrasound imaging method for diagnosing sarcopenia based on changes in muscle geometric proportions was introduced for the first time, which is a useful clinical tool for confirming the diagnosis of muscle mass.
Journal ArticleDOI
Differential expression of perilipin 2 and 5 in human skeletal muscle during aging and their association with atrophy-related genes
Maria Conte,Francesco Vasuri,Enrico Bertaggia,Andrea Armani,Aurelia Santoro,Elena Bellavista,Alessio Degiovanni,Antonia D’Errico-Grigioni,Giovanni Trisolino,Miriam Capri,Martino V. Franchi,Marco Narici,Marco Sandri,Claudio Franceschi,Stefano Salvioli +14 more
TL;DR: Compared the expression of Plin2 and Plin5 in Vastus lateralis muscle samples of subjects of different age, both healthy donors (HD) and patients with limited lower limb mobility (LLMI), these data indicate that Plin 2 and PlIn5 have a different expression pattern during muscle aging and inactivity, and only PlIn2 appears to be associated with functional alterations of the muscle.
Journal ArticleDOI
Developing a toolkit for the assessment and monitoring of musculoskeletal ageing.
Graham J. Kemp,Graham J. Kemp,Fraser Birrell,Fraser Birrell,Peter D. Clegg,Peter D. Clegg,Daniel J. Cuthbertson,Daniel J. Cuthbertson,Giuseppe De Vito,Jaap H. van Dieën,Silvia Del Din,Richard Eastell,Richard Eastell,Patrick Garnero,Katarzyna Goljanek-Whysall,Katarzyna Goljanek-Whysall,Matthias Hackl,Richard Hodgson,Malcolm J. Jackson,Malcolm J. Jackson,Sue Lord,Claudia Mazzà,Claudia Mazzà,Anne McArdle,Anne McArdle,Eugene V. McCloskey,Eugene V. McCloskey,Marco Narici,Mandy J. Peffers,Mandy J. Peffers,Stefano Schiaffino,John C. Mathers,John C. Mathers +32 more
TL;DR: This review assesses candidate biomarkers of musculoskeletal ageing under these four headings, details their biological bases, strengths and limitations, and makes practical recommendations for their use.
