Protein Carbonylation and Heat Shock Proteins in Human Skeletal Muscle: Relationships to Age and Sarcopenia

TL;DR: Analysis of links between human aging and markers of oxidative stress, and relationships to muscle mass and strength in young and old nonsarcopenic and sarcopenic adults, reveals that mitochondrial protein carbonylation increases moderately with age and that this increase may impact upon skeletal muscle function, but is not a hallmark of (stage-I) sarcopenia, per se.

TL;DR: In this article, the early onset of neuromuscular junction instability and impairment in calcium dynamics involved in excitation-contraction coupling are proposed as eligible determinants to the greater decline in muscle force than in muscle size during unloading.

Assessing sarcopenia with vastus lateralis muscle ultrasound: an operative protocol.

TL;DR: This operative protocol represents a good compromise between the feasibility of MUS in clinical settings and the need of obtaining precise measurements of muscle parameters, and is very useful for rapidly obtaining information on muscle mass and architecture.
