Protein Carbonylation and Heat Shock Proteins in Human Skeletal Muscle: Relationships to Age and Sarcopenia
Maria Reyes Beltran Valls,Daniel J. Wilkinson,Marco Narici,Kenneth Smith,Bethan E. Phillips,Daniela Caporossi,Philip J. Atherton +6 more
TL;DR: Analysis of links between human aging and markers of oxidative stress, and relationships to muscle mass and strength in young and old nonsarcopenic and sarcopenic adults, reveals that mitochondrial protein carbonylation increases moderately with age and that this increase may impact upon skeletal muscle function, but is not a hallmark of (stage-I) sarcopenia, per se.
Journal ArticleDOI
Sarcolab pilot study into skeletal muscle's adaptation to long-term spaceflight.
Jörn Rittweger,Jörn Rittweger,Kirsten Albracht,Kirsten Albracht,Martin Flück,Severin Ruoss,Lorenza Brocca,Emanuela Longa,Manuela Moriggi,Olivier R. Seynnes,Irene Di Giulio,Leonardo Tenori,Alessia Vignoli,Miriam Capri,Cecilia Gelfi,Claudio Luchinat,Claudio Francheschi,Roberto Bottinelli,Paolo Cerretelli,Marco Narici +19 more
TL;DR: It is concluded that countermeasures can be effective, particularly when resistive forces are of sufficient magnitude, however, to fully prevent space-related muscular deterioration, intersubject variability must be understood, and intensive exercise countermeasures programs seem mandatory.
Journal ArticleDOI
Neuromuscular junction instability and altered intracellular calcium handling as early determinants of force loss during unloading in humans.
Elena Monti,Carlo Reggiani,Martino V. Franchi,Luana Toniolo,Marco Sandri,Andrea Armani,Sandra Zampieri,Emiliana Giacomello,Fabio Sarto,Giuseppe Sirago,Marta Murgia,Marta Murgia,Leonardo Nogara,Lorenzo Marcucci,Stefano Ciciliot,Boštjan Šimunič,Rado Pišot,Marco Narici +17 more
TL;DR: In this article, the early onset of neuromuscular junction instability and impairment in calcium dynamics involved in excitation-contraction coupling are proposed as eligible determinants to the greater decline in muscle force than in muscle size during unloading.
Journal ArticleDOI
Assessing sarcopenia with vastus lateralis muscle ultrasound: an operative protocol.
Andrea Ticinesi,Marco Narici,Fulvio Lauretani,Antonio Nouvenne,Elena Colizzi,M. Mantovani,Andrea Corsonello,Francesco Landi,Tiziana Meschi,Marcello Maggio +9 more
TL;DR: This operative protocol represents a good compromise between the feasibility of MUS in clinical settings and the need of obtaining precise measurements of muscle parameters, and is very useful for rapidly obtaining information on muscle mass and architecture.
Journal ArticleDOI
Structure and function of human muscle fibres and muscle proteome in physically active older men.
Lorenza Brocca,Jamie S. McPhee,Emanuela Longa,Monica Canepari,Olivier R. Seynnes,Giuseppe De Vito,Maria Antonietta Pellegrino,Marco Narici,Roberto Bottinelli +8 more
TL;DR: In this paper, healthy, physically and socially active young (YO) and elderly (EL) men were recruited in order to study aging per se without the confounding effects of impaired physical function.
