Specific and non-specific effects of educational intervention with families living with a schizophrenic relative.
Jo Smith,Max Birchwood +1 more
TL;DR: The evidence suggests that family education may be useful both as a cost-effective intervention in its own right and in facilitating a more receptive attitude to subsequent family intervention.
Journal ArticleDOI
An exploration of evolved mental mechanisms for dominant and subordinate behaviour in relation to auditory hallucinations in schizophrenia and critical thoughts in depression.
Paul Gilbert,Max Birchwood,Jean Gilbert,Peter Trower,J. Hay,B. Murray,Alan Meaden,K. Olsen,Jeremy N. V. Miles +8 more
TL;DR: Evidence is presented that schizophrenic, malevolent voice hearers and self-critical depressed people experience their hostile, internally generated voices/thoughts as powerful, dominating and controlling (i.e. have typical characteristics of a hostile dominant) and these are associated with depression in both depression and schizophrenia.
Journal ArticleDOI
Clinical outcomes of Joint Crisis Plans to reduce compulsory treatment for people with psychosis: a randomised controlled trial
Graham Thornicroft,Simone Farrelly,George Szmukler,Max Birchwood,Waquas Waheed,Clare Flach,Clare Flach,Barbara Barrett,Sarah Byford,Claire Henderson,Kim Sutherby,Helen Lester,Diana Rose,Graham Dunn,Morven Leese,Max Marshall +15 more
TL;DR: There is evidence to suggest the JCPs were not fully implemented in all study sites, and were combined with routine clinical review meetings which did not actively incorporate patients' preferences.
Journal ArticleDOI
Loss, humiliation and entrapment as appraisals of schizophrenic illness: a prospective study of depressed and non-depressed patients.
Oliver Rooke,Max Birchwood +1 more
TL;DR: It is proposed that episodes of depression in schizophrenia are triggered by psychosis-related events that signify the inability to overcome the loss of a cherished personal goal or social role and thereby to affirm an identity.
