Azithromycin for Prevention of Exacerbations of COPD
Richard K. Albert,Richard K. Albert,John E. Connett,William C. Bailey,Richard Casaburi,J. Allen D. Cooper,Gerard J. Criner,Jeffrey L. Curtis,Mark T. Dransfield,MeiLan K. Han,Stephen C. Lazarus,Barry J. Make,Nathaniel Marchetti,Fernando J. Martinez,Nancy E. Madinger,Charlene McEvoy,Dennis E. Niewoehner,Janos Porsasz,Connie S. Price,Connie S. Price,John J. Reilly,Paul D. Scanlon,Frank C. Sciurba,Steven M. Scharf,George R. Washko,Prescott G. Woodruff,Nicholas R. Anthonisen +26 more
TL;DR: Among selected subjects with COPD, azithromycin taken daily for 1 year, when added to usual treatment, decreased the frequency of exacerbations and improved quality of life but caused hearing decrements in a small percentage of subjects.
Journal ArticleDOI
Simvastatin for the Prevention of Exacerbations in Moderate-to-Severe COPD
G.J. Criner,John E. Connett,Shawn D. Aaron,Richard K. Albert,William C. Bailey,Richard Casaburi,John A. D. Cooper,Jeffrey L. Curtis,Mark T. Dransfield,MeiLan K. Han,Barry J. Make,Nathaniel Marchetti,Fernando J. Martinez,Dennis E. Niewoehner,Paul D. Scanlon,Frank C. Sciurba,Steven M. Scharf,Don D. Sin,Helen Voelker,George R. Washko,Prescott G. Woodruff,Stephen C. Lazarus +21 more
TL;DR: Simvastatin at a daily dose of 40 mg did not affect exacerbation rates or the time to a first exacerbation in patients with COPD who were at high risk for exacerbations.
Journal ArticleDOI
Prevention of Acute Exacerbations of COPD: American College of Chest Physicians and Canadian Thoracic Society Guideline
Gerard J. Criner,Jean Bourbeau,Rebecca L. Diekemper,Daniel R. Ouellette,Donna Goodridge,Paul Hernandez,Kristen Curren,Meyer Balter,Mohit Bhutani,Pat G. Camp,Bartolome R. Celli,Gail Dechman,Mark T. TL;DR: This guideline is unique because it provides an up-to-date, rigorous, evidence-based analysis of current randomized controlled trial data regarding the prevention of COPD exacerbations.
Journal ArticleDOI
Cigarette smoke silences innate lymphoid cell function and facilitates an exacerbated type I interleukin-33-dependent response to infection.
Jennifer Kearley,Jonathan S. Silver,Caroline Sanden,Zheng Liu,Aaron A Berlin,Natalie White,Michiko Mori,Tuyet-Hang Pham,Christine K. Ward,Gerard J. Criner,Nathaniel Marchetti,Tomas Mustelin,Jonas S. Erjefält,Roland Kolbeck,Alison A. Humbles +14 more
TL;DR: In COPD, smoke alters the lung microenvironment to facilitate an alternative IL-33-dependent exaggerated proinflammatory response to infection, exacerbating disease.
Journal ArticleDOI
Pulmonary Hypertension and Computed Tomography Measurement of Small Pulmonary Vessels in Severe Emphysema
Shin Matsuoka,George R. Washko,Tsuneo Yamashiro,Raúl San José Estépar,Alejandro A. Diaz,Edwin K. Silverman,Eric A. Hoffman,Henry E. Fessler,Gerard J. Criner,Nathaniel Marchetti,Steven M. Scharf,Fernando J. Martinez,John J. Reilly,Hiroto Hatabu +13 more
TL;DR: The correlation of total cross-sectional area of small pulmonary vessels assessed on computed tomography scans with the degree of pulmonary hypertension estimated by right heart catheterization is significantly correlated to Ppa in severe emphysema and can estimate the degree.
