Linda P. Fried,Nemat O. Borhani,Paul L. Enright,Curt D. Furberg,Julius M. Gardin,Richard A. Kronmal,Lewis H. Kuller,Teri A. Manolio,Maurice B. Mittelmark,Anne B. Newman,Daniel H. O'Leary,Bruce M. Psaty,Pentti M. Rautaharju,Russell P. Tracy,Philip G. Weiler +14 more
TL;DR: These examinations in CHS permit evaluation of CVD risk factors in older adults, particularly in groups previously under-represented in epidemiologic studies, such as women and the very old.
Journal ArticleDOI
Ankle-arm index as a marker of atherosclerosis in the Cardiovascular Health Study. Cardiovascular Heart Study (CHS) Collaborative Research Group.
Anne B. Newman,David S. Siscovick,Teri A. Manolio,Joseph F. Polak,Linda P. Fried,Nemat O. Borhani,Sidney K. Wolfson +6 more
TL;DR: There was an inverse dose-response relation of the AAI with CVD risk factors and subclinical and clinical CVD among older adults, and even those with modest, asymptomatic reductions in theAAI appear to be at increased risk of CVD.
Journal ArticleDOI
The Effects of Nonpharmacologic Interventions on Blood Pressure of Persons With High Normal Levels: Results of the Trials of Hypertension Prevention, Phase I
Paul K. Whelton,Lawrence J. Appel,Jeanne Charleston,Arlene Taylor Dalcin,Craig K. Ewart,Linda P. Fried,Delores Kaidy,Michael J. Klag,Shiriki K. Kumanyika,Lyn Steffen,W. TL;DR: Weight reduction is the most effective of the strategies tested for reducing blood pressure in normotensive persons, and sodium reduction is also effective.
Journal ArticleDOI
Final Outcome Results of the Multicenter Isradipine Diuretic Atherosclerosis Study (MIDAS): A Randomized Controlled Trial
Nemat O. Borhani,Michele Mercuri,Patricia A. Borhani,Vardaman M. Buckalew,Maria Canossa-Terris,Albert A. Carr,Tissa Kappagoda,Michael V. Rocco,Harold W. Schnaper,James R. Sowers,M. Gene Bond +10 more
TL;DR: The rate of progression of mean maximum IMT in carotid arteries, the surrogate end point in this study, did not differ between the 2 treatment groups, and the increased incidence of vascular events in patients receiving isradipine compared with hydrochlorothiazide is of concern.
Journal ArticleDOI
Thickening of the carotid wall. A marker for atherosclerosis in the elderly? Cardiovascular Health Study Collaborative Research Group.
Daniel H. O'Leary,Joseph F. Polak,Richard A. Kronmal,Peter J. Savage,Nemat O. Borhani,Steven J. Kittner,Russell P. Tracy,Julius M. Gardin,Thomas R. Price,Curt D. Furberg +9 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated the relationship between prevalent coronary heart disease (CHD), clinically manifest atherosclerotic disease (ASD), and major established risk factors for atherosclerosis and intima-media thickness (IMT) in the common carotid arteries (CCA) and internal carotids arteries (ICA) separately and in combination in older adults.
