Journal ArticleDOI
A phase 2b randomized, controlled trial of the efficacy of the GMZ2 malaria vaccine in African children.
Sodiomon B. Sirima,Benjamin Mordmüller,Paul Milligan,Ulysse Ateba Ngoa,Fred Kironde,Frank Atuguba,Alfred B. Tiono,Saadou Issifou,Mark Kaddumukasa,Oscar Bangre,Clare Flach,Michael Christiansen,Peter Bang,Roma Chilengi,Søren Jepsen,Peter G. Kremsner,Michael Theisen +16 more
TL;DR: GMZ2 was well tolerated and immunogenic, and reduced the incidence of malaria, but efficacy would need to be substantially improved, using a more immunogenic formulation, for the vaccine to have a public health role.
Journal ArticleDOI
Attractiveness of MM-X Traps Baited with Human or Synthetic Odor to Mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) in The Gambia
Y.T. Qiu,Renate C. Smallegange,Cajo J. F. ter Braak,Jeroen Spitzen,Joop J. A. van Loon,Musa Jawara,Paul Milligan,Paul Milligan,Agnes M. Galimard,Teris A. van Beek,Bart G. J. Knols,Willem Takken +11 more
TL;DR: The candidate odor blend shows the potential to enhance trap collections so that traps will provide better surveillance and possible control and was the most attractive odor for most mosquito species.
Journal ArticleDOI
The effect of mass administration of sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine combined with artesunate on malaria incidence: a double-blind, community-randomized, placebo-controlled trial in The Gambia.
Lorenz von Seidlein,Lorenz von Seidlein,Lorenz von Seidlein,Gijs Walraven,Gijs Walraven,Paul Milligan,Neal Alexander,Fandingding Manneh,Jacqueline L. Deen,R. Coleman,Musa Jawara,Steve W. Lindsay,Chris Drakeley,Sarah De Martin,Piero Olliaro,Steve Bennett,Maarten F. Schim van der Loeff,Maarten F. Schim van der Loeff,Kunle Okunoye,G. A. T. Targett,Keith P. W. J. McAdam,Justin F. Doherty,Justin F. Doherty,Brian Greenwood,Margaret Pinder +24 more
TL;DR: Overall, no benefit of the MDA could be detected and the reason for the absence of an impact on malaria transmission is probably the very high basic reproductive number of malaria, and the persistence of mature gametocytes, which are not affected by AS treatment.
Journal Article
Factors determining the outcome of treatment of adult smear-positive tuberculosis cases in The Gambia
Christian Lienhardt,Kebba Manneh,V. Bouchier,George Lahai,Paul Milligan,Keith P. W. J. McAdam +5 more
TL;DR: Directly observed treatment is an effective intervention for improving adherence of tuberculosis patients to treatment in a resource-poor country, provided that drugs are effectively delivered to the most peripheral level, and that health staff are adequately trained and regularly supervised.
Journal ArticleDOI
Randomized Controlled Trial of RTS,S/AS02D and RTS,S/AS01E Malaria Candidate Vaccines Given According to Different Schedules in Ghanaian Children
Seth Owusu-Agyei,Daniel Ansong,Kwaku Poku Asante,Sandra Kwarteng Owusu,Ruth Owusu,Naana Ayiwa Wireko Brobby,David Dosoo,Alex Osei Yaw Akoto,Kingsley Osei-Kwakye,Emmanuel Asafo Adjei,Kwadwo Owusu Boahen,Justice Sylverken,George Adjei,David Sambian,Stephen Apanga,Kingsley Kayan,Johan Vekemans,Opokua Ofori-Anyinam,Amanda J. Leach,Marc Lievens,Marie-Ange Demoitié,Marie-Claude Dubois,Joe Cohen,W. Ripley Ballou,Barbara Savarese,Daniel Chandramohan,John O. Gyapong,Paul Milligan,Sampson Antwi,Tsiri Agbenyega,Brian Greenwood,Jennifer R Evans +31 more
TL;DR: This study supports the selection of RTS,S/AS01E and a 3 dose schedule for further development in children and infants and confirms both candidate malaria vaccines were well tolerated and had higher peak anti-circumsporozoite antibody responses for all 3 schedules.
