The planetary boundaries framework defines a safe operating space for humanity based on the intrinsic biophysical processes that regulate the stability of the Earth system. Here, we revise and update the planetary boundary framework, with a focus on the underpinning biophysical science, based on targeted input from expert research communities and on more general scientific advances over the past 5 years. Several of the boundaries now have a two-tier approach, reflecting the importance of cross-scale interactions and the regional-level heterogeneity of the processes that underpin the boundaries. Two core boundaries—climate change and biosphere integrity—have been identified, each of which has the potential on its own to drive the Earth system into a new state should they be substantially and persistently transgressed.

▪ Abstract Local habitat and biological diversity of streams and rivers are strongly influenced by landform and land use within the surrounding valley at multiple scales. However, empirical associations between land use and stream response only varyingly succeed in implicating pathways of influence. This is the case for a number of reasons, including (a) covariation of anthropogenic and natural gradients in the landscape; (b) the existence of multiple, scale-dependent mechanisms; (c) nonlinear responses; and (d) the difficulties of separating present-day from historical influences. Further research is needed that examines responses to land use under different management strategies and that employs response variables that have greater diagnostic value than many of the aggregated measures in current use. The coupling between tensile stress and water diffusion in composites represents a major issue in many marine applications (racing boats, offshore, marine energy installations, etc). Nevertheless, even if these behaviours are well documented as separate subjects or as partially coupled phenomena, there are still very few data on fully coupled mechanisms. This study aims to understand what governs the coupled behaviour, by studying the water diffusion in carbon/epoxy composites under static tensile stress. As a reference, the coupling is first studied on neat resin samples to characterise the matrix. Then the study focuses on composites with two types of woven fibre orientations: one at ±45°, in order to understand the coupling effects on composites loaded away from the reinforcement direction and another quasi-isotropic to get properties along the fibres. For each material we used the same approach: first, the tensile tests, damage propagation and water diffusion were studied separately. In a second section, the study focuses on semicoupled effects: water diffusion after damage introduction and tensile behaviour after ageing showing properties’ changes for +/-45° samples contrary to resin and quasi-isotropic composite. The final part of the study examines coupled phenomena and highlights variations compared to uncoupled behaviour for all the sample types. Mots Clés : Composites, couplage, traction, diffusion d’eau

The present invention relates to means and methods for the treatment of cholera. The current invention also provides for means and methods for the prevention of cholera. In particular, the means and methods of the current invention allows to target the bacteria that cause cholera, Vibrio cholerae, while not targeting other bacteria. Peptides are provided that can interfere with binding of Vibrio cholerae to the intestine thereby disrupting biofilm formation and/or colonization in the intestine can be disrupted, which is useful in the treatment or prevention of cholera. Means and methods to identify such peptides are provided as well.

Les câbles synthetiques tresses subissent des endommagements internes lors de leurs pas- sages sur des poulies du fait des interactions de contact-frottement entre leurs constituants internes. Une methode de simulation par elements finis est proposee afin de determiner la configuration initiale a priori inconnue des ces structures tressees, et d’evaluer les contraintes au niveau des brins constituant le câble tresse lors de sa flexion sur une poulie. Differentes architectures de câbles sont etudiees, et des tests de rupture en traction droite et en traction sur poulie sont simules.
