The planetary boundaries framework defines a safe operating space for humanity based on the intrinsic biophysical processes that regulate the stability of the Earth system. Here, we revise and update the planetary boundary framework, with a focus on the underpinning biophysical science, based on targeted input from expert research communities and on more general scientific advances over the past 5 years. Several of the boundaries now have a two-tier approach, reflecting the importance of cross-scale interactions and the regional-level heterogeneity of the processes that underpin the boundaries. Two core boundaries—climate change and biosphere integrity—have been identified, each of which has the potential on its own to drive the Earth system into a new state should they be substantially and persistently transgressed.

The power of feedback.

▪ Abstract Local habitat and biological diversity of streams and rivers are strongly influenced by landform and land use within the surrounding valley at multiple scales. However, empirical associations between land use and stream response only varyingly succeed in implicating pathways of influence. This is the case for a number of reasons, including (a) covariation of anthropogenic and natural gradients in the landscape; (b) the existence of multiple, scale-dependent mechanisms; (c) nonlinear responses; and (d) the difficulties of separating present-day from historical influences. Further research is needed that examines responses to land use under different management strategies and that employs response variables that have greater diagnostic value than many of the aggregated measures in current use. Biocomposites reinforced with natural fibers: 2000–2010

En raison de leur importante qualite, les materiaux composites sont tres largement utilises dans le domaine « marine ». Ils y ont supplante la construction classique en bois depuis nien des annees. L’objectif de cet article est de s’interesser aux applications marines des materiaux composites de facon generale, mais plus precisement au cas des voiliers de competition. En effet, le domaine de la voile de competition oblige de toujours progresser dans la conception, la mise en oeuvre ou encore l’utilisation des composites a hautes performances, tant il constitue un moteur de developpement important. Les structures, les materiaux utilises, la conception, le calcul des structures marines et la durabilite sont autant d’aspects etudies dans cet article.

Controlling Nuisance Aquatic Plants

Cette etude consiste a developper un modele analytique permettant la simulation de la reponse dynamique d'une structure soumise a un choc basse vitesse jusqu'au premier endommagement. Le modele se base sur la theorie des plaques epaisses anisotropes developpee par reddy et pagano, qui prend en compte l'effet de cisaillement transverse dans l'epaisseur. Une loi de penetration suivant la theorie de hertz traduit le comportement local sous l'impacteur. Elle a ete identifiee experimentalement en regime statique. Un schema numerique d'integration temporelle permet de calculer a tout instant la force de contact, le deplacement et les deformations, en combinant la penetration et la reponse dynamique de la structure. Le modele developpe rend possible l'etude parametrique des facteurs qui influent sur le comportement dynamique de la structure. La validation est effectuee en comparant les resultats a ceux obtenus par des essais de choc sur une machine a poids tombant instrumente et les predictions d'un modele energetique. L'etude experimentale a ete menee sur des composites verre/polyester monolithiques epais et sandwichs a peaux verre/polyester et ames pvc de 80 kg/m#3, lineaire ou rigide, afin de determiner leur comportement. Elle a permis, outre la validation du modele, de mettre en evidence les divers modes de ruptures ou d'endommagements des materiaux etudies sous une sollicitation dynamique ainsi qu'un effet de la vitesse de sollicitation sur les proprietes de l'ame du sandwich, mais que nous avons ignore dans notre etude. Une bonne correlation entre les previsions de deux modeles (analytique et energetique) et les resultats experimentaux est notee. Le modele analytique permet egalement a l'aide d'un critere de rupture simple (de deformation maximale) de prevoir la fin du domaine elastique dans la zone de fort cisaillement et de localiser la rupture

Etude du comportement dynamique de panneaux sandwichs à l'impact

This paper describes recent tests performed to determine stiffness and long term behaviour of polyester cables for mooring lines. Particular emphasis is placed on the potential sources of error associated with extensometry and verification of the uniformity of the strain field in the rope sample. Results from a series of tests on large cables (500 Tons minimum break load), sub-ropes and yarns are presented. Use of video systems with image analysis to check strain fields during tests will be described. Test details will be discussed in terms of OCIMF and Bureau Veritas guidelines for rope testing.
