The planetary boundaries framework defines a safe operating space for humanity based on the intrinsic biophysical processes that regulate the stability of the Earth system. Here, we revise and update the planetary boundary framework, with a focus on the underpinning biophysical science, based on targeted input from expert research communities and on more general scientific advances over the past 5 years. Several of the boundaries now have a two-tier approach, reflecting the importance of cross-scale interactions and the regional-level heterogeneity of the processes that underpin the boundaries. Two core boundaries—climate change and biosphere integrity—have been identified, each of which has the potential on its own to drive the Earth system into a new state should they be substantially and persistently transgressed.

▪ Abstract Local habitat and biological diversity of streams and rivers are strongly influenced by landform and land use within the surrounding valley at multiple scales. However, empirical associations between land use and stream response only varyingly succeed in implicating pathways of influence. This is the case for a number of reasons, including (a) covariation of anthropogenic and natural gradients in the landscape; (b) the existence of multiple, scale-dependent mechanisms; (c) nonlinear responses; and (d) the difficulties of separating present-day from historical influences. Further research is needed that examines responses to land use under different management strategies and that employs response variables that have greater diagnostic value than many of the aggregated measures in current use. Biocomposites reinforced with natural fibers: 2000–2010

Recent multibeam and towed video surveys at Port Stephens have disclosed additional information on habitat extent and diversity on Australia’s temperate southeast coast. Multibeam identified previously undescribed soft-sediment features at Seal Rocks and Broughton Island while also confirming broader geomorphological characteristics including the presence of a shelf sand body. While soft unconsolidated sediments dominate the seabed, reef, and mixed habitats covered 20%–40% of the seafloor over the inner- and mid-shelf and supported morphologically diverse sponge communities. Kelp, urchins, branching algae, and encrusting sponges were common to shallow sites (20–40 m) where depth variability was greatest. Sponges dominated over mid to deep-reef and mixed substrate areas and coexisted with ascidians (50–70 m) or sea whips and gorgonians (80–100 m). Multibeam was effective for identifying reef (82%) and soft-sediment (71%) areas but relatively less accurate at identifying mixed seabed. Further subdivisions within the current classification scheme are warranted if a more detailed and park-specific scheme is required.

Temperate rocky reef on the southeast Australian continental shelf

In order to analyse the influence of the mesostructure of filament wound cylinders on their mechanical behaviour it is essential both to control the fabrication process and to use advanced measurement techniques, such as fiber optic Bragg gratings, to study their behaviour. In this research project advances in unit cell precision positioning are presented. This paper includes a description of the composite pipe, monitoring during fabrication, a pipe reinforcement architecture analysis system and a study of the influence of architecture on mechanical properties.

The Effect of Elevated Temperature Exposure on the Mechanical Properties of Ti834

This paper presents results from a study of the long-term behaviour of carbon/epoxy composites. The interactions between ageing in water and constant mechanical loads are described, first experimentally then using a simple modelling approach. An identification procedure for the model is carried out and test/model comparisons are discussed. The results show that a four-parameter Burgers model can provide a good fit of the experimental data. The analysis of the results indicates the impact of water diffusion on the viscoelastic behaviour with larger strains for both creep and recovery phases. Those changes tend to appear at the early stage of the moisture diffusion process and stabilize quite quickly. This article is part of the theme issue 'Ageing and durability of composite materials'.

Characterization and modelling of the hygro-viscoelastic behaviour of polymer-based composites used in marine environment

Specifications in England and Wales frequently cite improvement in the quality of students’ arguments as a key objective of courses of study for public examinations. More generally, this objective might be seen as a central element in the process of citizenship education. However, there is evidence that progress in the quality of students’ arguments is disappointing relative to other dimensions of their achievement. Research evidence on the differences between informal and formal arguments provides a basis for identifying weaknesses in students’ arguments that might be addressed in teaching. This evidence also suggests ways in which these weaknesses might be addressed. However, this literature provides a generic account of the development of argument, rarely paying attention to differences between different subjects. Drawing on this literature this paper describes an approach to supporting the development of students’ arguments within two curriculum subject areas: geography and business studies. Similarities and differences between the subjects are identified and the way in which these characteristics of arguments have been used with students to develop their arguments is exemplified.
