The planetary boundaries framework defines a safe operating space for humanity based on the intrinsic biophysical processes that regulate the stability of the Earth system. Here, we revise and update the planetary boundary framework, with a focus on the underpinning biophysical science, based on targeted input from expert research communities and on more general scientific advances over the past 5 years. Several of the boundaries now have a two-tier approach, reflecting the importance of cross-scale interactions and the regional-level heterogeneity of the processes that underpin the boundaries. Two core boundaries—climate change and biosphere integrity—have been identified, each of which has the potential on its own to drive the Earth system into a new state should they be substantially and persistently transgressed.

▪ Abstract Local habitat and biological diversity of streams and rivers are strongly influenced by landform and land use within the surrounding valley at multiple scales. However, empirical associations between land use and stream response only varyingly succeed in implicating pathways of influence. This is the case for a number of reasons, including (a) covariation of anthropogenic and natural gradients in the landscape; (b) the existence of multiple, scale-dependent mechanisms; (c) nonlinear responses; and (d) the difficulties of separating present-day from historical influences. Further research is needed that examines responses to land use under different management strategies and that employs response variables that have greater diagnostic value than many of the aggregated measures in current use. Biocomposites reinforced with natural fibers: 2000–2010

Adhesive bonding is increasingly being used to assemble composite components. It is a complementary technology to the manufacture of the composites themselves and can be easily integrated into the production path. This chapter will first describe the specific nature of composite materials, limited here to fibre-reinforced polymers and sandwich materials. Then, critical aspects, including design, surface preparation, testing, and long-term durability, will be discussed. Three examples of adhesively bonded composite structures will be described: the first is the bonding of composite pipework, one of the largest industrial composite assembly operations. The second is a composite/metal assembly used for large ship structures. The third is the bonding of stiffeners to sandwich panels.

Abstract Friction is one of the key factors in the manufacture of ropes, and has an important influence on the mechanical behavior of many fiber assemblies. For this reason, the understanding and the evaluation of the coefficients of friction between fibers is an essential step in the development of numerical rope models. This paper describes tests on a modified, upscaled version of the ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) standard yarn-on-yarn abrasion test device, which allows measurement of the friction coefficient between polyamide rope yarns. It is shown that the inter-fiber angle has a significant influence on the friction coefficient, and the direction of movement relative to the filament has to be considered in the determination of this coefficient. A normalized representation allows friction coefficients measured for a range of test conditions to be plotted on a single curve. The abrasion test device allows the friction coefficient to be measured throughout abrasion tests. It is concluded that lower friction leads to higher abrasion resistance and longer lifetime.

It is well known that the water absorption in polyamide leads to a large reduction in the mechanical properties of the polymer, which is induced by the plasticization of the amorphous phase. However, predicting such a loss in a marine environment is not straightforward, especially when thick samples are considered. This study presents a modeling study of the water absorption in polyamide 6 based on the free volume theory. Using this modeling coupled with a description of the stress yield changes with Tg, it is possible to predict the long term behavior of thick samples when immersed in sea water. Reliability of the prediction is checked by a comparison with experimental results.
