The planetary boundaries framework defines a safe operating space for humanity based on the intrinsic biophysical processes that regulate the stability of the Earth system. Here, we revise and update the planetary boundary framework, with a focus on the underpinning biophysical science, based on targeted input from expert research communities and on more general scientific advances over the past 5 years. Several of the boundaries now have a two-tier approach, reflecting the importance of cross-scale interactions and the regional-level heterogeneity of the processes that underpin the boundaries. Two core boundaries—climate change and biosphere integrity—have been identified, each of which has the potential on its own to drive the Earth system into a new state should they be substantially and persistently transgressed.

The power of feedback.

▪ Abstract Local habitat and biological diversity of streams and rivers are strongly influenced by landform and land use within the surrounding valley at multiple scales. However, empirical associations between land use and stream response only varyingly succeed in implicating pathways of influence. This is the case for a number of reasons, including (a) covariation of anthropogenic and natural gradients in the landscape; (b) the existence of multiple, scale-dependent mechanisms; (c) nonlinear responses; and (d) the difficulties of separating present-day from historical influences. Further research is needed that examines responses to land use under different management strategies and that employs response variables that have greater diagnostic value than many of the aggregated measures in current use. There are many case reports of structural brain lesions that appear to cause or provoke headaches that are clinically indistinguishable from primary headache syndromes. ‘Symptomatic migraine’ is the term used under the second edition of the International Classification of Headache Disorders (ICHD-II) to describe such cases, which mimic migraine. However, symptomatic migraine with visual aura (MA) is rare. It has been reported most often in association with parieto-occipital arteriovenous malformations and rarely with cerebral venous thrombosis, extracranial artery dissection and cerebral metastases (1). Migrainous visual aura is believed to be caused by cortical spreading depression (CSD) generated in the visual cortex, and in ‘symptomatic’ cases the anatomical relationship of the lesion to this brain region is presumed to explain the aura. However, we report here the rapid evolution of MA in a patient who proved to have a colloid cyst of the third ventricle, an area remote from the visual cortex. There was no previous or family history of migraine and the MA symptoms resolved immediately and completely following removal of the cyst. On review more than a year later, the patient had experienced no further headache or aura, suggesting that the colloid cyst had provoked the syndrome.

This paper describes a study of the fatigue characterization of polyamide mooring ropes for floating wind turbines. Under some conditions polyester ropes, which are favoured for offshore platform station-keeping, are too stiff for wind turbine moorings, and polyamide may be a suitable alternative. While early studies on fatigue of braided nylon ropes showed very short lifetimes some recent results have indicated that it is possible to significantly enhance lifetime by modifying rope construction and improving fibre coatings [1]. The fatigue results presented here for ropes from a different supplier, confirm this result. In order to develop an accelerated evaluation of the fatigue performance, heat build-up tests have been performed, and promising first results are shown. Finally, the influence of coating is examined by microscopy and yarn-on-yarn tests, in order to improve understanding of the fatigue mechanisms leading to failure.
