TL;DR: It is shown, using data from 854 sites across Africa, that maximum woody cover in savannas receiving a mean annual precipitation (MAP) of less than ∼650 mm is constrained by, and increases linearly with, MAP.

The CAMPFIRE programme in Zimbabwe: payments for wildlife services
TL;DR: The first 12 years (1989-2001) of the Communal Areas Management Programme for Indigenous Resources (CAMPFIRE) was described in this article, a community-based natural resource management program in which Rural District Councils, on behalf of communities on communal land, are granted the authority to market access to wildlife in their district to safari operators.
Journal ArticleDOI
Competing Claims on Natural Resources: What Role for Science?
Ken E. Giller,Cees Leeuwis,Jens A. Andersson,Wim Andriesse,Arie Brouwer,Peter G. H. Frost,Paul Hebinck,Ignas M. A. Heitkönig,Martin K. van Ittersum,N.B.J. Koning,Ruerd Ruben,Maja Slingerland,Henk Udo,Tom Veldkamp,Claudius van de Vijver,Mark T. van Wijk,Pieter Windmeijer +16 more

Bruce M. Campbell,Jeffrey Sayer,Peter G. H. Frost,Sonja J. Vermeulen,M. Ruiz Perez,Anthony Cunningham,Ravi Prabhu +6 more
TL;DR: This work proposes a framework for assessing system performance using indicators from the sustainable-livelihoods perspective, and develops an Integrated Interpretation of the Indicators.
Journal ArticleDOI
Trends in savanna structure and composition along an aridity gradient in the Kalahari
Robert J. Scholes,P. R. Dowty,Kelly K. Caylor,D.A.B. Parsons,Peter G. H. Frost,Herman H. Shugart +5 more
TL;DR: The authors reviewed the literature on the vegetation of the Kalahari and described the vegetation structure and composition at 11 new sites and found that there is a clear gradient in woody plant biomass (as indexed by basal area) from south to north.
