Vectorial capacity and vector control: reconsidering sensitivity to parameters for malaria elimination
Oliver J. Brady,H. Charles J. Godfray,Andrew J. Tatem,Andrew J. Tatem,Peter W. Gething,Justin M. Cohen,F. Ellis McKenzie,T. Alex Perkins,T. Alex Perkins,Robert C. Reiner,Robert C. Reiner,Lucy S. Tusting,Marianne E. Sinka,Marianne E. Sinka,Catherine L. Moyes,Philip A. Eckhoff,Thomas W. Scott,Thomas W. Scott,Steven W. Lindsay,Simon I. Hay,Simon I. Hay,Simon I. Hay,David L. Smith +22 more
TL;DR: Reaching specific policy goals, such as elimination, in defined contexts requires increasingly non-generic advice from modelling, and the results emphasize the importance of measuring baseline epidemiology, intervention coverage, vector ecology and program operational constraints in predicting expected outcomes with different combinations of interventions.
Journal ArticleDOI
Recasting the theory of mosquito-borne pathogen transmission dynamics and control
David L. Smith,T. Alex Perkins,T. Alex Perkins,Robert C. Reiner,Robert C. Reiner,Christopher M. Barker,Christopher M. Barker,Tianchan Niu,Tianchan Niu,Luis Fernando Chaves,Alicia M. Ellis,Dylan B. Hay,Thomas W. Scott,Thomas W. Scott +47 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a systematic review of 388 models published between 1970 and 2010 found that the vast majority adopted the Ross-Macdonald assumption of homogeneous transmission in a well-mixed population and pointed to the capacity to model heterogeneous, focal transmission as the most important but relatively unexplored component in current theory.
Journal ArticleDOI
Predicting the risk of avian influenza A H7N9 infection in live-poultry markets across Asia
Marius Gilbert,Nick Golding,Hang Zhou,G. R. William Wint,Timothy P. Robinson,Andrew J. Tatem,Shengjie Lai,Sheng Zhou,Hui-Hui Jiang,Danhuai Guo,Zhi Huang,Jane P. Messina,Xiangming Xiao,Catherine Linard,Thomas P. Van Boeckel,Vincent Martin,Samir Bhatt,Peter W. Gething,Jeremy Farrar,Simon I. Hay,Hongjie Yu +20 more
TL;DR: Using newly assembled data sets of the locations of 8,943 live-poultry markets in China and maps of environmental correlates, a statistical model is developed that accurately predicts the risk of H7N9 market infection across Asia.
Journal ArticleDOI
Using remotely sensed night-time light as a proxy for poverty in Africa
Abdisalan M. Noor,Abdisalan M. Noor,Victor A. Alegana,Peter W. Gething,Peter W. Gething,Andrew J. Tatem,Andrew J. Tatem,Robert W. Snow,Robert W. Snow +8 more
TL;DR: Metrics of the brightness of NTL data offer a robust and inexpensive alternative to asset-based poverty indices derived from survey data at the Administrative 1 level in Africa and could be used to explore economic inequity in health outcomes and access to health interventions at sub-national levels where household assets data are not available at the required resolution.
Journal ArticleDOI
Coverage of malaria protection in pregnant women in sub-Saharan Africa: a synthesis and analysis of national survey data.
Anna Maria van Eijk,Anna Maria van Eijk,Jenny Hill,Victor A. Alegana,Viola C. Kirui,Peter W. Gething,Feiko O. ter Kuile,Feiko O. ter Kuile,Robert W. Snow,Robert W. Snow +9 more
TL;DR: Despite success in a few countries, coverage of insecticide-treated nets and intermittent preventive treatment in pregnant African women is inadequate; increased efforts towards scale-up are needed.
