Climate Change 2007: The Physical Science Basis.

Graphene’s success has shown that it is possible to create stable, single and few-atom-thick layers of van der Waals materials, and also that these materials can exhibit fascinating and technologically useful properties. Here we review the state-of-the-art of 2D materials beyond graphene. Initially, we will outline the different chemical classes of 2D materials and discuss the various strategies to prepare single-layer, few-layer, and multilayer assembly materials in solution, on substrates, and on the wafer scale. Additionally, we present an experimental guide for identifying and characterizing single-layer-thick materials, as well as outlining emerging techniques that yield both local and global information. We describe the differences that occur in the electronic structure between the bulk and the single layer and discuss various methods of tuning their electronic properties by manipulating the surface. Progress, Challenges, and Opportunities in Two-Dimensional Materials Beyond Graphene

In situ SEM observation was carried out during the whole quasistatic compression process to investigate the energy absorption mechanism of fly ash/aluminium syntactic foam. The results indicate that the damage appeared on the wall of cenospheres, leading to a local stress concentration, and then a crack band formed. Once cenospheres were collapsed layer by layer along the crack band, the syntactic foam engendered visible macroplastic strain at a near constant stress level. The macroplastic strain was caused by the collapse of cenospheres, which is the main mechanism of aluminium matrix syntactic foam as an energy absorption material.

Compression deformation behaviour of aluminium matrix syntactic foams under quasistatic loading: in situ SEM compressive tests

In microbial ecology, the “everything is everywhere” hypothesis has long been controversial. In the present study, we performed data-mining for 18S rDNA sequences of glomeromycotan fungi in order to test this hypothesis. 18S rDNA sequences targeted using AM1–NS31 fragments were retrieved from GenBank, with a total of 1768 sequences collected from 34 sites worldwide. In total, 229, 330 and 518 operational taxonomic units (OTUs) were defined based on 97, 98 and 99 % similarity, respectively. The 97 % OTUs showed a limited geographical range of glomeromycotan fungi. Among the OTUs, 58.1 % were endemic, and 17.9 % and 9.2 % were found in two and three sites, respectively. The most widespread OTU was shared by 17 sites. Phylogenetic structure analysis demonstrated that most local communities (26 of 34) were clustered. OTUs with larger host breadth had wider geographic ranges. A significant distance–decay relationship was revealed that was independent of habitat. Cluster analysis showed that fungal composition was not related to habitat, while Fast UniFrac analysis indicated that the distribution of Glomeromycota was affected by temperature. Taken together, these results suggest that glomeromycotan fungi were not randomly distributed under natural conditions; rather, they were affected by host plants, dispersal ability and temperature. Thus, the distribution of glomeromycotan fungi argues against the hypothesis that “everything is everywhere.”

Microneedle Patch Prepared from a Hydrogel by a Mild Method for Insulin Delivery

We report that fluorescent organic light-emitting diodes (FOLEDs) with the emitting layer including a dianthranide derivative material produced highly efficient and bright emission in the deep blue region. It is found that this material works as an excellent host for creating high-performance FOLEDs with Commission International de L'Eclairage (CIE) coordinates (x = 0.147, y = 0.125), high current efficiency (CE) of 6.4 cd A−1 and external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 7.40% at 20 mA cm−2.
