Climate Change 2007: The Physical Science Basis.

Graphene’s success has shown that it is possible to create stable, single and few-atom-thick layers of van der Waals materials, and also that these materials can exhibit fascinating and technologically useful properties. Here we review the state-of-the-art of 2D materials beyond graphene. Initially, we will outline the different chemical classes of 2D materials and discuss the various strategies to prepare single-layer, few-layer, and multilayer assembly materials in solution, on substrates, and on the wafer scale. Additionally, we present an experimental guide for identifying and characterizing single-layer-thick materials, as well as outlining emerging techniques that yield both local and global information. We describe the differences that occur in the electronic structure between the bulk and the single layer and discuss various methods of tuning their electronic properties by manipulating the surface. Progress, Challenges, and Opportunities in Two-Dimensional Materials Beyond Graphene

In this paper, a compact optical switch for self-collimated light beams in a liquid–crystal-modulated photonic crystal is proposed. The designed optical switch is working at 1550 nm. The equi-frequency contours and band diagram of the structure are calculated by using plane wave expansion method. The transmission spectra for different liquid crystal rotation angle are computed with finite-difference time-domain method. Meanwhile, the steady-state field distributions of the light propagation in the structure are presented. The designed optical switch may find important applications in the photonic integrated circuits.

High Thermal Conducting Boron Arsenide: Crystal Growth and Characterization

Abstract. In this paper, we consider a priori and a posteriori error estimates of the H (curl 2 )-conforming finite element when solving the quad-curl eigenvalue problem. An a priori estimate of eigenvalues with convergence order 2( s −1) is obtained if the corresponding eigenvector u ∈ H s −1 (Ω) and ∇ × u ∈ H s (Ω). For the a posteriori estimate, by analyzing the associated source problem, we obtain lower and upper bounds for the errors of eigenvectors in the energy norm and upper bounds for the errors of eigenvalues. Numerical examples are presented for validation.

Two-dimensional transition metal carbides/nitrides, known as MXenes, have recently received significant attention for gas sensing applications. However, Mxenes have strong adsorption to many types of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and therefore gas sensors based on MXenes generally have poor selectivity. Herein, we developed a Ti 3 C 2 T X based multivariable sensor which allows identification of different VOCs, and concentration prediction of the target VOC in variable backgrounds. The sensor’s responses from the broadband impedance spectra create a unique fingerprint for each VOC. Based on the methodologies of principal component analysis and linear discrimination analysis, we demonstrate highly accurate identifications for different types of VOCs and mixtures using this multivariable sensor. Furthermore, we demonstrate an accuracy of 93.2% for the prediction of ethanol concentrations in the presence of different concentrations of water and methanol. The high level of identification and concentration estimation shows the great potential of MXene based multivariable sensor for detection of target VOCs in the presence of known and unknown interferences.

Multivariable Sensor Based on Mxene and Machine Learning for Selective Detections of VOCs

OBJECTIVE: We studied the biological function of Brucella phosphoglucomutase (pgm) gene, and detected the changes of human trophoblast cell invaded by the Brucella pgm mutant and PGM protein. METHODS: Human trophoblast cells were infected by the pgm mutant and PGM protein. The changes of cytokines were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and morphology of cells was identified. RESULTS: PGM protein was purified, and pgm mutant was constructed. The sera of mice immunized by pgm mutant were negative by agglutination test and Standard Tube Agglutination Test for Brucellosis. The cellular morphology of human trophoblast cells infected pgm mutant or PGM protein changed. The adhesion and infection of the pgm mutant reduced more than Brucella vaccine strain M5-90, and human trophoblast cells partially cracked off. The activity of IL-6, TNF-alpha or lactic dehydrogenae increased in human trophoblast cells infected by the pgm mutant more than Brucella vaccine strain M5-90 (P < 0.01), but not for IL-10. Lactic dehydrogenae in human trophoblast cells infected by the PGM Protein increased more than sodium phosphate buffer (P < 0.01), whereas IL-6 and TNF-alpha decreased in human trophoblast cells less than sodium phosphate buffer (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The results suggest that the pgm mutant of brucella and PGM protein had the cytotoxic effect for human trophoblast cells with cellular morphology and changes of cytokines.
