Global CO2 emissions from dry inland waters share common drivers across ecosystems
Philipp S. Keller,Núria Catalán,Núria Catalán,D. von Schiller,Hans-Peter Grossart,Hans-Peter Grossart,Matthias Koschorreck,Biel Obrador,Marieke A. Frassl,Marieke A. Frassl,Nusret Karakaya,Nathan Barros,Julia Howitt,Clara Mendoza-Lera,Ada Pastor,Giovanna Flaim,Ralf Aben,Tenna Riis,María Isabel Arce,Gabriela Onandia,José R. Paranaíba,Annika Linkhorst,R. del Campo,R. del Campo,André Megali Amado,André Megali Amado,Sophie Cauvy-Fraunié,Jason Condon,Raquel Mendonça,Florian Reverey,Eva-Ingrid Rõõm,Thibault Datry,Fábio Roland,Alo Laas,Ulrike Obertegger,Jong-Gil Park,H. Oliveira Junior,Claumir Cezar Muniz,Lluís Gómez-Gener,Catherine Leigh,Qian Zhang,Rafael Marcé,Rafael Marcé +51 more
TL;DR: A global survey covering 196 dry inland waters shows that their CO2 emissions share fundamental drivers and constitute a substantial fraction of the carbon cycled by inland waters, increasing current inland water carbon flux estimates by 6%.
Journal ArticleDOI
Cross continental increase in methane ebullition under climate change
Ralf Aben,Nathan Barros,Ellen Van Donk,Thijs Frenken,Sabine Hilt,Garabet Kazanjian,Leon P. M. Lamers,Edwin T. H. M. Peeters,Jan G. M. Roelofs,Lisette N. de Senerpont Domis,Susanne Stephan,Mandy Velthuis,Dedmer B. Van de Waal,Martin Wik,Brett F. Thornton,J. Wilkinson,Tonya DelSontro,Sarian Kosten +17 more
TL;DR: It is suggested that global warming will strongly enhance freshwater CH4 emissions through a disproportional increase in ebullition (6–20% per 1 °C increase), contributing to global warming.
Journal ArticleDOI
Warming advances top-down control and reduces producer biomass in a freshwater plankton community
Mandy Velthuis,Lisette N. de Senerpont Domis,Thijs Frenken,Susanne Stephan,Garabet Kazanjian,Ralf Aben,Sabine Hilt,Sarian Kosten,Ellen Van Donk,Dedmer B. Van de Waal +9 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated the impact of global warming on phytoplankton community dynamics, and assessed the relative contribution of nutrient availability, fungal parasitism, and grazing therein.
Journal ArticleDOI
Warming accelerates termination of a phytoplankton spring bloom by fungal parasites
Thijs Frenken,Mandy Velthuis,Lisette N. de Senerpont Domis,Susanne Stephan,Ralf Aben,Sarian Kosten,Ellen Van Donk,Dedmer B. Van de Waal +7 more
TL;DR: The study emphasizes the importance of incorporating not only nutrient limitation and grazing, but also parasitism in understanding the response of plankton communities towards global warming.
Journal ArticleDOI
Seasonal and diel variation in greenhouse gas emissions from an urban pond and its major drivers
Tamara J. H. M. van Bergen,Nathan Barros,Nathan Barros,Raquel Mendonça,Raquel Mendonça,Ralf Aben,Inge H. J. Althuizen,Inge H. J. Althuizen,Vera L. M. Huszar,Leon P. M. Lamers,Miquel Lürling,Fábio Roland,Sarian Kosten +12 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated GHG emissions, seasonal and diel variation, and net ecosystem production (NEP) from an urban pond, which was a net GHG source the entire year, with an emission of 3.4 kg CO2 eq m−2 yr−1.
