Genomic and physiological footprint of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill on resident marsh fishes
Andrew Whitehead,Benjamin Dubansky,Charlotte Bodinier,Tzintzuni Garcia,Scott Miles,Chet Pilley,Vandana Raghunathan,Jennifer L. Roach,Nan D. Walker,Ronald B. Walter,Charles D. Rice,Fernando Galvez +11 more
TL;DR: It is suggested that heavily weathered crude oil from the spill imparts significant biological impacts in sensitive Louisiana marshes, some of which remain for over 2 mo following initial exposures.
Journal ArticleDOI
The genome of the platyfish, Xiphophorus maculatus , provides insights into evolutionary adaptation and several complex traits
Manfred Schartl,Ronald B. Walter,Yingjia Shen,Tzintzuni Garcia,Julian M. Catchen,Angel Amores,Ingo Braasch,Ingo Braasch,Domitille Chalopin,Jean-Nicolas Volff,Klaus-Peter Lesch,Angelo Bisazza,Patrick Minx,LaDeana W. Hillier,Richard K. Wilson,Susan I. Fuerstenberg,Jeffrey L. Boore,Steve Searle,John H. Postlethwait,Wesley C. Warren +19 more
TL;DR: It is found that genes implicated in cognition show an unexpectedly high rate of duplicate gene retention after the teleost genome duplication event, suggesting a hypothesis for the evolution of the behavioral complexity in fish, which exceeds that found in amphibians and reptiles.
Journal ArticleDOI
Silver nanospheres are cytotoxic and genotoxic to fish cells
John Pierce Wise,Britton C. Goodale,Sandra S. Wise,Gary A. Craig,Adam Pongan,Ronald B. Walter,W. Douglas Thompson,Ah-Kau Ng,AbouEl-Makarim Aboueissa,Hiroshi Mitani,Mark J. Spalding,Michael Mason,Michael Mason +12 more
TL;DR: Data show that silver nanoparticles are cytotoxic and genotoxic to fish cells and induced chromosomal aberrations and aneuploidy.
Journal ArticleDOI
Phylogenomics reveals extensive reticulate evolution in Xiphophorus fishes.
TL;DR: The results allow us to reexamine a long‐standing controversy about the evolution of the sexually selected sword in Xiphophorus, and demonstrate that hybridization has been strikingly widespread in the evolutionary history of this genus.
Journal ArticleDOI
Mutation frequency declines during spermatogenesis in young mice but increases in old mice
TL;DR: The unexpected observation of a decline in mutation frequency during spermatogenesis is made, such that the mutation frequencies of type B sperMatogonia and all subsequent stages of sperMATogenesis are lower than the frequency for primitive type A sper matogonia.
