Quality Engineering: Quality of Communication Technology Systems

Speech communication channels and their components (e.g. codecs) are generally designed for optimum perceived speech quality. However, transmission channels should also preserve principal speaker-specific characteristics that enable acceptable speaker identification performance by end listeners. This paper proposes a first step towards effective approaches for the prediction of the human speaker identification performance from instrumental quality measures. Correspondences between speech quality and speaker identification accuracy are shown by fitting linear curves to data points involving different channel transmissions. Narrowband, wideband, and super-wideband channels are considered, with other typically associated distortions. Our analyses show that Coloration, one of the perceptual quality dimensions, can be a better predictor of the human speaker identification performance than overall quality predictions in terms of Mean Opinion Scores. This suggests that the speakerspecific properties of the voice are mainly impaired by the distortion of frequency components in the transmission path.

Position Paper: Towards Standardized Metrics and Tools for Spoken and Multimodal Dialog System Evaluation

Extended Reality (XR), an umbrella term for AR and VR, is growing in academic and business applications. Each technology simulates reality differently regarding immersion, content, and environment interaction. This gives content providers various chances to deliver material in innovative ways and from faraway locations. XR’s freedom allows for a lot of creativity in different aspects, including such as design and art. XR technology has already been included and used in several events and venues recently, but this work will discuss possibilities with XR and the performing arts. During the last several years, XR and performing arts have gotten closer. The power and necessity to integrate developing technologies into arts are becoming more apparent, especially with COVID-19. XR technology’s expansion and the performing arts digital transition provide a dilemma: how to construct the future of performing arts with XR? This study theoretically addresses the challenge by building the prototype experience and testing this prototype XR performance with a live audience. 

The Future of the Performing Arts with Extended Reality

Als zweiter Anwendungsfall sollen in diesem Kapitel Systeme zur Ubertragung und Speicherung von Video-Signalen betrachtet werden. Dabei handelt es sich z. B. um Anwendungen wie das traditionelle (terrestrisch drahtlose oder kabelgebundene) Fernsehen, Video on Demand, Video Streaming, Video-Telefonie, oder Videokonferenzen. Die Ubertragung findet zunehmend uber IP-basierte Netze statt; dadurch lassen sich Mediendaten jedweden Typs uber ein einheitliches Netz transportieren, was den Aufwand minimiert und die Anwendungsbreite erhoht. Bspw. lassen sich uber schnelle Digital Subscriber Lines (DSL) neben Daten auch Sprache (Voice-over-IP) und Videos (IP-basiertes Fernsehen) transportieren. Auch wenn wir in diesen Kapitel vorwiegend von Video-Ubertragungen sprechen, so geht das Videosignal in den meisten Fallen mit einem Audiosignal einher; wir betrachten daher auch audiovisuelle Signale.
