Journal ArticleDOI
Risk factors for ischaemic and intracerebral haemorrhagic stroke in 22 countries (the INTERSTROKE study): a case-control study
Martin O'Donnell,Martin O'Donnell,Denis Xavier,Lisheng Liu,Hongye Zhang,Siu Lim Chin,Purnima Rao-Melacini,Sumathy Rangarajan,Shofiqul Islam,Prem Pais,Matthew J. McQueen,Charles Mondo,Albertino Damasceno,Patricio Lopez-Jaramillo,Graeme J. Hankey,Antonio L. Dans,Khalid Yusoff,Thomas Truelsen,Hans-Christoph Diener,Ralph L. Sacco,Danuta Ryglewicz,Anna Członkowska,Christian Weimar,Xingyu Wang,Salim Yusuf +24 more
TL;DR: The findings suggest that ten risk factors are associated with 90% of the risk of stroke, and targeted interventions that reduce blood pressure and smoking, and promote physical activity and a healthy diet, could substantially reduce the burden of stroke.
Journal ArticleDOI
Prevalence, Awareness, Treatment, and Control of Hypertension in Rural and Urban Communities in High-, Middle-, and Low-Income Countries
Clara K Chow,Clara K Chow,Koon K. Teo,Sumathy Rangarajan,Shofiqul Islam,Rajeev Gupta,Alvaro Avezum,Ahmad Bahonar,Jephat Chifamba,Gilles R. Dagenais,Rafael Diaz,Khawar Kazmi,Fernando Lanas,Li Wei,Patricio Lopez-Jaramillo,Lu Fanghong,Noor Hassim Ismail,Thandi Puoane,Annika Rosengren,Andrzej Szuba,Ahmet Temizhan,Andy Wielgosz,Rita Yusuf,Afzalhussein Yusufali,Martin McKee,Lisheng Liu,Prem Mony,Salim Yusuf +27 more
TL;DR: The findings suggest substantial room for improvement in hypertension diagnosis and treatment and suggest low education was associated with lower rates of awareness, treatment, and control in LICs, but not in other countries.
Journal ArticleDOI
Global and regional effects of potentially modifiable risk factors associated with acute stroke in 32 countries (INTERSTROKE): a case-control study
Martin O'Donnell,Martin O'Donnell,Siu Lim Chin,Sumathy Rangarajan,Denis Xavier,Lisheng Liu,Hongye Zhang,Purnima Rao-Melacini,Xiaohe Zhang,Prem Pais,Steven Agapay,Patricio Lopez-Jaramillo,Albertino Damasceno,Peter Langhorne,Matthew J. Iversen,Germán Málaga,Zvonko Rumboldt,Shahram Oveisgharan,Fawaz Al Hussain,Daliwonga Magazi,Yongchai Nilanont,John Ferguson,Guillaume Paré,Salim Yusuf +47 more
TL;DR: The importance of potentially modifiable risk factors for stroke in different regions of the world, and in key populations and primary pathological subtypes of stroke, was quantified.
Journal ArticleDOI
Prognostic value of grip strength: findings from the Prospective Urban Rural Epidemiology (PURE) study
Darryl P. Leong,Darryl P. Leong,Koon K. Teo,Koon K. Teo,Sumathy Rangarajan,Patricio Lopez-Jaramillo,Alvaro Avezum,Andres Orlandini,Pamela Seron,SH Ahmed,Annika Rosengren,Roya Kelishadi,Omar Rahman,Sumathi Swaminathan,Romaina Iqbal,Rajeev Gupta,Scott A. TL;DR: This study suggests that measurement of grip strength is a simple, inexpensive risk-stratifying method for all-cause death, cardiovascular death, and cardiovascular disease.
Journal ArticleDOI
Risk Factors for Early Myocardial Infarction in South Asians Compared With Individuals in Other Countries
Prashant P. Joshi,Shofiqul Islam,Prem Pais,Srinath Reddy,Prabhakaran Dorairaj,Khawar Kazmi,Mrigendra Raj Pandey,Sirajul Haque,Shanthi Mendis,Sumathy Rangarajan,Salim Yusuf +10 more
TL;DR: The earlier age of AMI in South Asians can be largely explained by higher risk factor levels at younger ages, particularly for smoking and psychosocial factors such as depression and stress at work or home.
