TL;DR: The structural changes in PSII induced by two-flash illumination at room temperature at a resolution of 2.35 Å are described, providing a mechanism for the O=O bond formation consistent with that proposed previously.
Journal ArticleDOI
A three-dimensional movie of structural changes in bacteriorhodopsin
Eriko Nango,Antoine Royant,Antoine Royant,Minoru Kubo,Takanori Nakane,Cecilia Wickstrand,Tetsunari Kimura,Tomoyuki Tanaka,Kensuke Tono,Changyong Song,Rie Tanaka,Toshi Arima,Ayumi Yamashita,Jun Kobayashi,Toshiaki Hosaka,Eiichi Mizohata,Przemyslaw Nogly,Michihiro Sugahara,Daewoong Nam,Takashi Nomura,Tatsuro Shimamura,Dohyun Im,Takaaki Fujiwara,Yasuaki Yamanaka,Byeonghyun Jeon,Tomohiro Nishizawa,Tomohiro Nishizawa,Kazumasa Oda,Masahiro Fukuda,Rebecka Andersson,Petra Båth,Robert Dods,Jan Davidsson,Shigeru Matsuoka,Satoshi Kawatake,Michio Murata,Osamu Nureki,Shigeki Owada,Takashi Kameshima,Takaki Hatsui,Yasumasa Joti,Gebhard F. X. Schertler,Gebhard F. X. Schertler,Makina Yabashi,Ana-Nicoleta Bondar,Jörg Standfuss,Richard Neutze,So Iwata +47 more
TL;DR: Time-resolved serial femtosecond crystallography at an x-ray free electron laser shows how motions are choreographed as bR transports protons uphill against a transmembrane concentration gradient.
Journal ArticleDOI
Conformational landscape of cytochrome c folding studied by microsecond-resolved small-angle x-ray scattering.
Shuji Akiyama,Satoshi Takahashi,Tetsunari Kimura,Koichiro Ishimori,Isao Morishima,Yukihiro Nishikawa,Tetsuro Fujisawa +6 more
TL;DR: This work developed a continuous-flow mixing device to make small-angle x-ray scattering measurements and characterized the radius of gyration of two folding intermediates of cytochrome c (cyt c), and clarified the folding pathway of cyt c on the conformational landscape defined by Rg and fH.
Journal ArticleDOI
An oxyl/oxo mechanism for oxygen-oxygen coupling in PSII revealed by an x-ray free-electron laser
Michihiro Suga,Michihiro Suga,Fusamichi Akita,Fusamichi Akita,Keitaro Yamashita,Yoshiki Nakajima,Go Ueno,Hongjie Li,Hongjie Li,Takahiro Yamane,Kunio Hirata,Yasufumi Umena,Shinichiro Yonekura,Long Jiang Yu,Hironori Murakami,Takashi Nomura,Tetsunari Kimura,Minoru Kubo,Seiki Baba,Takashi Kumasaka,Kensuke Tono,Makina Yabashi,Hiroshi Isobe,Kizashi Yamaguchi,Masaki Yamamoto,Hideo Ago,Jian Ren Shen +26 more
TL;DR: To reveal the mechanism of water oxidation, structures of PSII in the S1, S2, and S3 states by x-ray free-electron laser serial crystallography reveal details of photosynthetic oxygen evolution.
Journal ArticleDOI
Collapse and search dynamics of apomyoglobin folding revealed by submillisecond observations of α-helical content and compactness
Takanori Uzawa,Shuji Akiyama,Tetsunari Kimura,Satoshi Takahashi,Koichiro Ishimori,Isao Morishima,Tetsuro Fujisawa +6 more
TL;DR: The characterized folding dynamics of apoMb indicates the importance of the initial collapse event, which is suggested to facilitate the subsequent conformational search and the helix formation leading to the native structure.
