Saiz-Salinas,Carles San Vicente,Samuel Somot,José Templado,Xavier Turon,Dimitris Vafidis,Roger Villanueva,Eleni Voultsiadou +38 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors combined an extensive literature analysis with expert opinions to update publicly available estimates of major taxa in this marine ecosystem and to revise and update several species lists.
Journal ArticleDOI
The sponge microbiome project
Lucas Moitinho-Silva,Shaun Nielsen,Amnon Amir,Antonio Gonzalez,Gail Ackermann,Carlo Cerrano,Carmen Astudillo-García,Cole G. Easson,Detmer Sipkema,Fang Liu,Georg Steinert,Giorgos Kotoulas,Grace P. Hill,Susanna López-Legentil,Thanos Dailianis,Timothy Ravasi,Ute Hentschel,Zhiyong Li,Nicole S. Webster,Nicole S. Webster,Torsten Thomas +40 more
TL;DR: This dataset represents a comprehensive resource of sponge-associated microbial communities based on 16S rRNA gene sequences that can be used to address overarching hypotheses regarding host-associated prokaryotes, including host specificity, convergent evolution, environmental drivers of microbiome structure, and the sponge- associated rare biosphere.
Journal ArticleDOI
Micro-computed tomography: Introducing new dimensions to taxonomy
Sarah Faulwetter,Aikaterini Vasileiadou,Michail Kouratoras,Thanos Dailianis,Christos Arvanitidis +4 more
TL;DR: The potential of micro-computed tomography (X-ray micro-tomography), a non-destructive three-dimensional imaging technique based on mapping X-ray attenuation in the scanned object, for supporting research in systematics and taxonomy is explored.
Journal ArticleDOI
Polytraits: A database on biological traits of marine polychaetes
Sarah Faulwetter,Vasiliki Markantonatou,Christina Pavloudi,Nafsika Papageorgiou,Kleoniki Keklikoglou,Eva Chatzinikolaou,Evangelos Pafilis,Georgios Chatzigeorgiou,Katerina Vasileiadou,Thanos Dailianis,Lucia Fanini,Panayota Koulouri,Christos Arvanitidis +12 more
TL;DR: Polytraits (http://polytraits.lifewatchgreece.eu) is described, a database on biological traits of marine polychaetes (bristle worms, Polychaeta: Annelida), which contains almost 20,000 records on morphological, behavioural and reproductive characteristics of more than 1,000 marinepolychaete species.
Journal ArticleDOI
Genetic diversity of the imperilled bath sponge Spongia officinalis Linnaeus, 1759 across the Mediterranean Sea: patterns of population differentiation and implications for taxonomy and conservation.
TL;DR: No genetic differentiation exists among the acknowledged Mediterranean morphotypes, and S. officinalis can be viewed as a single, morphologically variable species, and its genetic diversity is maintained high in most studied locations.
