Pattern-oriented modeling of agent-based complex systems: lessons from ecology
Volker Grimm,Eloy Revilla,Uta Berger,Florian Jeltsch,Wolf M. Mooij,Steven F. Railsback,Hans-Hermann Thulke,Jacob Weiner,Thorsten Wiegand,Donald L. DeAngelis +9 more
TL;DR: This paper argues that recent advances in ecological modeling have come together in a general strategy that provides a unifying framework for decoding the internal organization of agent-based complex systems and may lead toward unifying algorithmic theories of the relation between adaptive behavior and system complexity.
Journal ArticleDOI
Rings, circles, and null-models for point pattern analysis in ecology
Thorsten Wiegand,Kirk A. Moloney +1 more
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that large-scale heterogeneity of a point-pattern biases Ripley's K-function at smaller scales, and it is shown that it can be removed when applying methods that account for first-order effects.
Journal ArticleDOI
Identification of 100 fundamental ecological questions
William J. Sutherland,Robert P. Freckleton,H. Charles J. Godfray,Steven R. Beissinger,Tim G. Benton,Duncan D. Cameron,Yohay Carmel,David A. Coomes,Tim Coulson,Mark C. Emmerson,Rosemary S. Turnbull,David A. Wardle,Thorsten Wiegand +34 more
TL;DR: The 100th anniversary of the British Ecological Society in 2013 is an opportune moment to reflect on the current status of ecology as a science and look forward to high-light priorities for future work.
Journal ArticleDOI
Global patterns of tropical forest fragmentation
Franziska Taubert,Rico Fischer,Jürgen Groeneveld,Jürgen Groeneveld,Sebastian Lehmann,Michael S. Müller,Edna Rödig,Thorsten Wiegand,Andreas Huth,Andreas Huth +9 more
TL;DR: Almost 130 million forest fragments in three continents are identified that show surprisingly similar power-law size and perimeter distributions as well as fractal dimensions, suggesting that forest fragmentation is close to the critical point of percolation.
Journal ArticleDOI
Using pattern-oriented modeling for revealing hidden information: a key for reconciling ecological theory and application
TL;DR: Using the pattern-oriented approach to its full potential will require a major paradigm shift in the strategies of modeling and data collection, and it is argued that more emphasis must be placed on observing and documenting relevant patterns in addition to attempts to obtain direct estimates of model parameters.
