Journal ArticleDOI
The gut microbiota influences blood-brain barrier permeability in mice
Viorica Braniste,Maha Al-Asmakh,Czeslawa Kowal,Farhana Anuar,Afrouz Abbaspour,Miklós Tóth,Agata Korecka,Nadja Bakocevic,Lai Guan Ng,Parag Kundu,Balázs Gulyás,Balázs Gulyás,Christer Halldin,Christer Halldin,Kjell Hultenby,Harriet Nilsson,Hans Hebert,Bruce T. Volpe,Betty Diamond,Sven Pettersson,Sven Pettersson +20 more
TL;DR: It is shown that germ-free pregnant dams, devoid of maternal microbes, have offspring that show increased permeability of the blood-brain barrier, suggesting that crosstalk between the gut microbiota and the brain, initiated during the intrauterine period, is perpetuated throughout life.
Journal ArticleDOI
Probiotic gut effect prevents the chronic psychological stress-induced brain activity abnormality in mice
Afifa Ait-Belgnaoui,André Colom,Viorica Braniste,L. Ramalho,A Marrot,Christel Cartier,Eric Houdeau,V. Theodorou,Thomas A. Tompkins +8 more
TL;DR: A probiotic formulation (Lactobacillus helveticus R0052 and Bifidobacterium longum R0175 combination, Probio'Stick®) displays anxiolytic‐like activity and reduces apoptosis in the lymbic system in animal models of depression.
Journal ArticleDOI
Impact of oral bisphenol A at reference doses on intestinal barrier function and sex differences after perinatal exposure in rats
Viorica Braniste,Aurore Jouault,Eric Gaultier,Arnaud Polizzi,Claire Buisson-Brenac,Mathilde Leveque,Pascal G.P. Martin,Vassilia Theodorou,Jean Fioramonti,Eric Houdeau +9 more
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that the xenoestrogen BPA at reference doses influences intestinal barrier function and gut nociception, and perinatal exposure promotes the development of severe inflammation in adult female offspring only.
Journal ArticleDOI
Oestradiol decreases colonic permeability through oestrogen receptor β-mediated up-regulation of occludin and junctional adhesion molecule-A in epithelial cells
Viorica Braniste,Mathilde Leveque,Claire Buisson-Brenac,Lionel Bueno,Jean Fioramonti,Eric Houdeau +5 more
TL;DR: Data show that oestrogen reinforces intestinal epithelial barrier through ERβ‐mediated up‐regulation of the transmembrane proteins occludin and JAM‐A determining paracellular spaces.
Journal ArticleDOI
Bidirectional communication between the Aryl hydrocarbon Receptor (AhR) and the microbiome tunes host metabolism
Agata Korecka,Anthony C. Dona,Anthony C. Dona,Shawon Lahiri,Adrian Tett,Maha Al-Asmakh,Viorica Braniste,Rossana D’Arienzo,Afrouz Abbaspour,Nicole Reichardt,Yoshiaki Fujii-Kuriyama,Joseph Rafter,Arjan Narbad,Elaine Holmes,Jeremy K. Nicholson,Velmurugesan Arulampalam,Sven Pettersson,Sven Pettersson +17 more
TL;DR: The data suggest the existence of a bidirectional AhR-microbiome axis, which influences host metabolic pathways, and exposure to a high-fat diet showed resilience to glucose intolerance.
