TL;DR: There is no evidence that type 2 diabetes influenced BMD in the postmenopausal patient group and the possible relationship between chronic diabetic complications and bone density was evaluated.
Abstract: Objectives Controversy remains as to the effects of type 2 diabetes on bone metabolism. The aims of this study were to assess the association between type 2 diabetes and bone mineral density (BMD) and to evaluate the possible relationship between chronic diabetic complications and bone density. Methods Bone mineral densities at the lumbar spine, femur, and radius in 206 postmenopausal Turkish women with type 2 diabetes were evaluated by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry and compared with those in 61 age-matched postmenopausal nondiabetic women. Medical and lifestyle characteristics, body mass index (BMI), hemoglobin A 1c level, and status of microvascular and macrovascular diabetic complications were recorded. Frequency of osteoporosis and that of osteopenia as well as the relationship between microvascular and macrovascular complications and BMD were evaluated. Results The groups did not differ on BMDs and T scores at the hip, lumbar spine, and radius. Patients with radial and/or lumbar and/or hip osteoporosis had a longer duration of diabetes ( P =.000), were older ( P =.000), and had a lower BMI ( P =.000). No correlation was found between osteopenia or osteoporosis and hemoglobin A 1c level, presence of microalbuminuria, retinopathy, neuropathy, peripheral artery disease, cerebrovascular event, and coronary artery disease. Among the three sites, BMD at the hip was positively correlated with BMI ( P =.000) but negatively correlated with age ( P =.000) and duration of diabetes ( P =.000). Presence of microalbuminuria revealed a negative correlation with BMD at the femoral neck ( P =.042). Conclusion There is no evidence that type 2 diabetes influenced BMD in our postmenopausal patient group.

TL;DR: The effects of sildenafil citrate administration on lipid peroxidation and antioxidant redox enzymes in blood of healthy men are investigated.
Abstract: SUMMARY Background and objective: Sildenafil citrate enhances the action of nitric oxide by preventing the hydrolysis of cGMP, and is widely used to treat erectile dysfunction. We investigated the effects of sildenafil citrate administration on lipid peroxidation and antioxidant redox enzymes in blood of healthy men. Method: Thirty healthy male subjects were divided equally into two groups. The first group was used as the control. A single dose of sildenafil citrate was administrated orally to subjects constituting the second group. Blood samples were obtained at 0, 2, 6 and 24 h after intake of the single dose of 100 mg sildenafil citrate or placebo. Results and discussion: The dose of sildenafil citrate resulted in significant increase in the erythrocyte superoxide dismutase and catalase activities at 6 and 24 h. Plasma lipid peroxidation levels decreased slightly. There was no statistical difference in erythrocyte glutathione peroxidase activity between the placebo and sildenafil citrate groups. Conclusion: Treatment of blood with 100 mg sildenafil citrate has protective effects on oxidative stress by inhibiting free radical formation and by supporting antioxidant redox systems.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors studied the accretion process for fluids flowing near a black hole in the context of f(T) teleparallel gravity and found that these flows can be classified according to the equation of state and the black hole features.
Abstract: In this paper, we study the accretion process for fluids flowing near a black hole in the context of f(T) teleparallel gravity. Specifically, by performing a dynamical analysis by a Hamiltonian system, we are able to find the sonic points. After that, we consider different isothermal test fluids in order to study the accretion process when they are falling onto the black hole. We find that these flows can be classified according to the equation of state and the black hole features. Results are compared in f(T) and f(R) gravity.

TL;DR: The viability and proliferative capacity of crushed human septal cartilage depend on the degree of crushing sustained, and significant or severe crushing reduces chondrocyte viability and proliferation and may result in unpredictable degrees of graft volume loss.
Abstract: ObjectiveTo investigate how different degrees of crushing affect the viability of human nasal septum chondrocytes in adherent cell cultures. MethodsCartilage grafts were harvested from the nasal se...

TL;DR: In this paper, the required features and standards of distance education as well as basic concepts of it are discussed and discussed in the context of web-based distance education, where the content of such a system or education programs should have a robust structure to provide significant advantages in reusing and upgrading of the content and system.
Abstract: Web-based distance education has been providing low operational cost and means to solve problems of education in the various disciplines and fields of public and private sectors. It also creates opportunities such as professional development, personal develepment, attending certification or academic programs for the people who are already employed. Obviously, the content of such a system or education programs should have a robust structure. The structure would provide significant advantages in re-using and upgrading of the content and system. This particular study emphasizes the required features and standards of distance education as well as basic concepts of it.
