TL;DR: In this article, the brain MRI findings during an episode after hemodialysis and at follow-up, and identify possible factors that may contribute to lesion development were presented.
Abstract: OBJECTIVE. Osmotic demyelination syndrome has been reported in patients with end-stage renal disease, but the specific MRI findings in this patient group have not been documented in detail. Our aims were to present the brain MRI findings during an episode after hemodialysis and at follow-up, and to identify possible factors that may contribute to lesion development.MATERIALS AND METHODS. Seventeen patients with osmotic demyelination syndrome who had undergone hemodialysis at least once and had brain MRI examinations were retrospectively reviewed. Neurologic and MRI examinations were performed during a clinical episode. Serum levels of sodium, creatinine, blood urea nitrogen, and glucose were assessed, and serum osmolality and the ratio of blood urea nitrogen to creatinine (BUN:Cr) were calculated. Follow-up MRI was performed in nine cases. Laboratory and imaging findings were evaluated.RESULTS. An altered level of consciousness and convulsions were the most common neurologic symptoms. The pons was involve...

TL;DR: In this article, the implications for centre-right politics and democracy in Turkey of the rise to power of the Justice and Development Party (Adalet ve Kalkinma Partisi, AKP) in the November 2002 general election are analyzed.
Abstract: This article analyses the implications for centre-right politics and democracy in Turkey of the rise to power of the Justice and Development Party (Adalet ve Kalkinma Partisi, AKP) in the November 2002 general election. It is argued that the AKP has both similarities with and differences from the centre-right political parties that have dominated Turkish politics in the aftermath of the 1980 coup d’etat. It is possible to find continuity in the conciliatory and synthesizing stance of the AKP, as well as in its rather conservative stance. The AKP’s disposition vis-a-vis state-centred politics is considered, as is its standpoint with regard to pluralism and democracy.

TL;DR: US-guided placement of central vein catheters in patients with disorder of hemostasis is safe with high technical success and low complication rates and US guidance for central venous catheterization should be the preferred method in this group of patients, if available in the hospital setting.

TL;DR: The results of this study indicate that stature-group-specific formulae are more reliable for forensic cases than general formulas devised for other populations.
Abstract: Most forensic and biological anthropological studies use the stature-estimation formulae developed by Trotter and Gleser In recent decades, studies of morphological differences between populations have indicated that population-specific formulae are necessary to obtain accurate estimates A number of equations have been devised for the Turkish population Previously, we introduced a "general formula" and three "stature-group-specific formulae" based on tibial length The purpose of the present study was to determine whether formulae in the literature are suitable for estimating height in the Turkish population To make this assessment, we compared the accuracy of formulae designed for Turkish people to the accuracy of formulae devised for other populations We also evaluated the accuracy in short, medium, and tall height groupings The formulae were tested on 110 healthy Turkish male adults, with estimated height compared to true height in each case Analysis showed that the Trotter-Gleser formula for Mongoloids was most accurate for estimating stature in the study group as a whole The formulae of Sagir for the Turkish population and our previously published "general formula" were the next most accurate methods, respectively When the 110 subjects were categorized as short (1652 mm and below), medium (1653 to 1840 mm), and tall (1841 and above), the stature-group-specific formulae calculated in the present study were more accurate than all other equations for subjects at the height extremes The results of this study indicate that stature-group-specific formulae are more reliable for forensic cases

TL;DR: The European Association for Cardiovascular Imaging (EACVI) has outlined the rationale for setting appropriate use criteria (AUC) in cardiovascular (CV) imaging, which will be used to under-pin the development of AUC for TTE in the adult.
Abstract: The European Association for Cardiovascular Imaging (EACVI) has outlined the rationale for setting appropriate use criteria (AUC) in cardiovascular (CV) imaging. Transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) is the most common imaging modality in CV disease and is a central tool in diagnosis, follow-up, management planning and intervention. The purpose of AUC is to inform referrers, both to avoid under-use, which may result in incomplete or incorrect diagnosis and treatment, and also over-use, which may delay correct diagnosis, lead to 'treatment cascade', and wastes resources. The first step in defining AUC for TTE in the adult has been for a panel of experts in echocardiography to review the evidence, guidelines, recommendations, and position papers from the European Society of Cardiology, EACVI and other specialist societies, and current state-of-the-art clinical practice. The attached document summarizes this work, which will be used to under-pin the development of AUC.
