Abstract: En este trabajo se presenta un metodo para medir la variacion del calcio intracelular en celulas foliculares. Esta propuesta consiste en dos etapas: (i) La deteccion de los nucleos de las celulas; y (ii) el analisis de las variaciones de fluorescencia. La primera etapa se realiza a traves de la transformada modificada de lineas divisoras de agua controlada por marcadores (en ingles: Modified-Watershed Transformation) controlando el proceso de etiquetado de celulas por el establecimiento de criterios particulares. El proceso de deteccion homogeniza las condiciones de luminosidad a traves de un filtro morfologico y utiliza como descriptores a los bordes de las celulas. En la segunda etapa, se asocia la variacion de la fluorescencia con los cambios de Ca2+ intracelular donde la variacion se modela como una funcion exponencial decreciente. Luego, se presenta un nuevo proceso morfologico, denominado proceso de reconstruccion medio, que permite suavizar los datos para el proceso de modelado. Este proceso utiliza la informacion del sub modelado y sobre modelado de la senal, mediante las propiedades de los operadores de reconstruccion, conservando la estructura interna de la senal original. Finalmente, en un proceso experimental utilizando celulas de anfibios, se muestran los resultados obtenidos despues de aplicar la propuesta a un grupo de celulas

Abstract: A simple and rapid synthesis of a CoFeRu-based electrocatalyst by a microwave-assisted method (using water as the microwave absorbing solvent) is reported in this work. Agglomerates with different sizes and shapes are observed by scanning electron microscopy technique. The energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy shows a low atomic percentage of Co and similar atomic percentage of Fe and Ru. However, the X-ray diffraction exhibits only the presence of metallic Ru and Fe2O3 (hematite) phases. The oxygen reduction without and with 2 mol L−1 methanol is studied using the rotating disk electrode technique. The electrochemical kinetic parameters obtained are compared to a similar electrocatalyst reported in the literature, which was synthesized using a mixture of an organic solvent with DI water as the microwave absorbing solvent. An improvement on the activity of the electrocatalyst synthesized is observed, where high Tafel slopes are not observed. The electrocatalyst also showed tolerance to the presence of methanol during the oxygen reduction reaction.

Abstract: Although several processes have been developed to obtain ceramic coatings, many of them are complex, and expensive equipment is required. As an alternative process, in this work, electrodeposition was used to deposit silica on stainless steel substrates. The properties of commercial silica were changed by adding some chemical compounds. Potassium hydroxide was added to promote, in a controllable way, the formation of a silicate network to obtain good adherence on metallic substrates. The addition of reagents caused controlled destabilization on suspension and promoted the formation of clusters. The application of an electric field to obtain coatings allowed the orientation of charged particles and, hence, the properties of the deposited material to be modified. Electrokinetic parameters, electrical response, and GDS profiles were measured to determine the influence of electric field on the coatings.

Abstract: Our cultural heritage kept in sandstone is doubtless suffering from accelerated biodeterioration. Fungi play a key role, either by acid production, dye secretion or as microbiont in the symbiotic association of the lichen with algae. The use of the universal initiators for the amplification of conserved regions of the ribosomal genes has been serving as an excellent marker for the microorganism identification, due to the ubiquity and conservation of these regions present in the genome of the eucarionts. In this chapter, the different fungi species present in sandstone were identified using molecular analysis techniques, as amplifiers in genes chains and the sequentiation of the resultant fragments. A theoric model of the way that the fungus contributes to the biodeterioration of monuments is proposed, with the objective of a better understanding of the contributions of these microorganisms in the general process of biodeterioration.
