Abstract: People socialized in different cultures differ in their thinking styles. Eastern-culture people view objects more holistically by taking context into account, whereas Western-culture people view objects more analytically by focusing on them at the expense of context. Here we studied whether participants, who have different thinking styles but live within the same culture, exhibit differential brain activity when viewing a drama movie. A total of 26 Finnish participants, who were divided into holistic and analytical thinkers based on self-report questionnaire scores, watched a shortened drama movie during functional magnetic resonance imaging. We compared intersubject correlation (ISC) of brain hemodynamic activity of holistic vs analytical participants across the movie viewings. Holistic thinkers showed significant ISC in more extensive cortical areas than analytical thinkers, suggesting that they perceived the movie in a more similar fashion. Significantly higher ISC was observed in holistic thinkers in occipital, prefrontal and temporal cortices. In analytical thinkers, significant ISC was observed in right-hemisphere fusiform gyrus, temporoparietal junction and frontal cortex. Since these results were obtained in participants with similar cultural background, they are less prone to confounds by other possible cultural differences. Overall, our results show how brain activity in holistic vs analytical participants differs when viewing the same drama movie.

Abstract: Partitions of sequential data exist either per se or as a result of sequence segmentation algorithms. It is often the case that the same timeline is partitioned in many different ways. For example, different segmentation algorithms produce different partitions of the same underlying data points. In such cases, we are interested in producing an aggregate partition, i.e., a segmentation that agrees as much as possible with the input segmentations. Each partition is defined as a set of continuous non-overlapping segments of the timeline. We show that this problem can be solved optimally in polynomial time using dynamic programming. We also propose faster greedy heuristics that work well in practice. We experiment with our algorithms and we demonstrate their utility in clustering the behavior of mobile-phone users and combining the results of different segmentation algorithms on genomic sequences.

Abstract: Personalization is a process that changes the functionality, interface, information content, or appearance of a system to increase its personal relevance to an individual Personalization systems accommodate individual's needs and interests explicitly through changes and selections initiated by the user, and implicitly through automatic adaptation techniques Currently most of the emphasis in personalization systems is geared towards the utilitarian aspects of personalized information delivery However, what is lacking is the customization of information based on its likely emotional and cognitive effects on different users of communication technology Information presented to individual users or a group of users may be customized on the basis of the immediate emotional and cognitive types of psychological effects it is likely to enable or create in certain individuals or groups Both content and its way of presentation (modality, visual layouts, ways of interaction, structure) may be varied Despite obvious complexities empirical evidence suggests that the way of presenting information to certain psychological profiles has predictable psychological effects For instance, one may facilitate positive emotion for users with certain personality type or more efficient learning for certain cognitive styles This is the basic concept of mind-based technologies Psychological customization may be considered an operationalization and technique of implementing the concept of mind-based technologies in system design Psychological customization may be used for controlling social interaction-centric and individual-centric influence of the content and way of presentation of information on consequent and transient emotional and cognitive effects This paper explores the design space and presents a basic system architecture to implement psychological customization

Abstract: Smart spaces provide a shared view of dynamic resources and context-aware services within a distributed application. There is, however, no standard scheme for integration of several independent applications. In this paper we analyze two particular smart space-based applications: Smart Conference system that assists conferencing process online and SmartScribo system that provides advanced access to the blogosphere. For this reference use case we propose a scheme of their integration that employs an agent to share knowledge between the origin applications. The initial implementation was demonstrated in the 9th FRUCT Conference and indicates the applicability of our approach.
