TL;DR: It seems likely that the lesion described herein originated from the serous cell of the bronchial submucosal gland and can be designated as an acinic cell tumor analogous to that occurring in the salivary gland.
Abstract: This is the first description, to our knowledge, of a primary neoplasm of the lower respiratory tract having the cytologic appearance of a salivary gland acinic cell tumor. When examined by light microscopy, the cells have cytoplasmic granules which are positive with PAS and negative with mucicarmine, alcian blue, and Masson-Fontana stains. Ultrastructurally, two cell types are seen: a dark cell resembling the normal serous cell of the bronchial submucosal gland and a light cell similar to the cells of previously reported acinic cell tumors of the parotid. It seems likely that the lesion described herein originated from the serous cell of the bronchial submucosal gland and can be designated as an acinic cell tumor analogous to that occurring in the salivary gland. Salivary gland acinic cell tumors are histologically distinctive neoplasms which may have their metastases appear more than 10 years after removal of the primary. Our patient is well nearly 2 years after lobectomy.

TL;DR: The behavior of adenomatous polyps in tissue culture suggests a malignant potential of those lesions and their possible ability to become not only histologic, but also biologic cancers.
Abstract: Carcinoma in situ was found in 16.0% of patients with histologically verified cases of solitary and multiple adenomatous polyps of the colon and rectum. In patients with adenomatous polyps only, the incidence was 6.1%. The incidence rose to 47.0% in the group of patients having adenomatous polyps associated with carcinoma in the same segment of the colon. This figure suggests that the diagnosis of carcinoma in situ in a polyp should be followed by careful search for frank adenocarcinoma in the proximity. Organ tissue cultures on the fibrin foam matrix demonstrated a morphological transition from cytologically benign adenomatous polyps into focal carcinoma in situ in more than two thirds of cultured cases. Moreover, a few of these polyps developed invasive features similar to those observed in cultures of colonic adenocarcinoma. The behavior of adenomatous polyps in tissue culture suggests a malignant potential of those lesions and their possible ability to become not only histologic, but also biologic cancers.

TL;DR: The ion kinetic energy spectra of the di- and tetra-chloroisomers confirm the suggested fragmentation pathways and suggest randomization of chlorine over both phenyl rings in the molecular ion prior to fragmentation.
Abstract: The mass spectra of several di- and tetra-chlorobiphenyls suggested randomization of chlorine over both phenyl rings in the molecular ion prior to fragmentation. The exceptions, 2,2′- and 2,6-dichloro-, 2,2′,4,4′-, 2,2′,5,5′-, 2,3,5,6-, and 2,2′,6,6′-tetrachloro-biphenyls, all contain two or more chlorine atoms ortho to the Ph–Ph bond and their metastable ion intensities which result from the M→M– Cl2 reaction are markedly different from those of the other isomers. The primary ion spectra of most isomeric compounds are similar, with successive losses of Cl· from the molecular ion. This process is often accompanied by expulsion of HCl from the lower chlorine homologues (2)–(5) but only the reactions which expel Cl· are accompanied by metastable ions. The ion kinetic energy spectra of the di- and tetra-chloroisomers confirm the suggested fragmentation pathways.

TL;DR: It was concluded that metolazone had no effect on the distal H + secretory mechanism and did not impair the ability to acidify normally the urine in response to an oral load of NH 4 Cl.
Abstract: The renal effects of metolazone, a new sulfonamide diuretic, were investigated in normal volunteers. Metolazone given i.v. to hydrated subjects increased sodium excretion and urine flow rate (V) and decreased free water clearance (C H H2 O ). At any level of V, C H H2 O was lower after metolazone than in controls. In hydropenic subjects, metolazone also increased sodium excretion and osmolal clearance (C osm ). Unlike C H H2 O , however, tubular reabsorption of solute-free water rose and at levels of C osm greater than 6% of glomerular filtration rate it exceeded control values. It was concluded from these observations that metolazone exerted its effect in the proximal tubule and in the cortical segment of the ascending limb of Henle9s loop or early distal convoluted tubule. The increase in calcium, magnesium and phosphate excretion and the decrease in bicarbonate reabsorption were attributed to the action of this diuretic in the proximal tubule. Metolazone did not impair the ability to acidify normally the urine in response to an oral load of NH 4 Cl. It was concluded, therefore, that metolazone had no effect on the distal H + secretory mechanism.

TL;DR: One of the fragments, CNBr-I has 92 amino acid residues, contains no homoserine or methionine and corresponds to the car☐yl-terminal peptide, which is of particular interest since it was shown to retain a high content of α-helix, while the other fragments were mainly disordered, and to possess the ability to bind phosphatidyl choline.

TL;DR: Previous reports of the antibacterial activity of chetomin were confirmed and the antibiotic was shown to inhibit the mycelial growth of some fungi and to inhibit protein synthesis in cultures of HeLa cells.
Abstract: Chetomin is a metabolite of Chaetomium cochliodes and C globosum It is produced by C cochliodes on a denned medium and the yield is increased about 50-fold by the addition of corn steep liquor to the culture medium Five single spore isolates of C cochliodes (HLX 440) all produced chetomin and one of them produced appreciable quantities of a metabolite related to chetomin but having a S:N ratio of 1:1 Previous reports of the antibacterial activity of chetomin were confirmed and the antibiotic was shown, in addition, to inhibit the mycelial growth of some fungi At 002 μg/ml, it inhibited protein synthesis in cultures of HeLa cells Its oral LD50 in rats was 75 mg/kg, and in turkeys, 30 mg/kg No pathological changes were observed in lambs dosed orally at 30 mg/kg but a single intraperitoneal dose of chetomin at 5 mg/kg resulted in the death of half the animals treated Sublethal oral doses in all the animal species mentioned resulted in loss of body weight

TL;DR: Cerebral revascularization using a recently developed intracranial bypass procedure for the occluded internal carotid artery was found effective in increasing rCBF in selected cases where the procedure was successful.
Abstract: Regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF), hemispheric blood flow (HBF), extracranial blood flow, and regional cerebral blood volume (rCBV) have been measured in a series of patients using a gamma camera equipped with a magnetic tape system for storage and retrieval. This method eliminates the need for multiple probes in measuring these parameters. 133Xe and 99m Tc injected into the carotid arteries were used as radioactive indicators. These measurements were carried out in patients with cerebral infarction, intracerebral hematoma, brain tumor, arteriovenous malformation, and dementia. The HBF values obtained with this method were in excellent agreement with those using the hydrogen bolus method in the same patients. The effects of 5% CO2 inhalation, intravenous infusion of glycerol, and vasodilator drugs on rCBF and rCBV were evaluated and were found useful from diagnostic and therapeutic points of view. “Intracerebral steal” or “intracerebral squeeze” were demonstrated only in patients with space-occupying lesions such as intracerebral hematoma or brain tumor. Cerebral revascularization using a recently developed intracranial bypass procedure for the occluded internal carotid artery was found effective in increasing rCBF in selected cases where the procedure was successful.

TL;DR: It was shown that the model compound, 1,4-dimethyl-3,6-epidithiopiperazine-2,5-dione, gave the cyclic tetrasulphide on treatment with dihydrogen disulphides, and a new crystalline metabolite of Pithomyces chartarum was isolated with molecular formula C18H20ClN3O6S4.
Abstract: When the tail fractions from chromatograms of sporidesmin E(I; n= 3) were rechromatographed, a new crystalline metabolite of Pithomyces chartarum was isolated with molecular formula C18H20ClN3O6S4. The new compound, named, sporidesmin G (I; n= 4), gave sporidesmin (I; n= 2) on irradiation or treatment with triphenylphosphine, and sporidesmin D (V) after reduction and methylation. It was shown that the model compound, 1,4-dimethyl-3,6-epidithiopiperazine-2,5-dione, gave the cyclic tetrasulphide on treatment with dihydrogen disulphide. Similarly, sporidesmin and sporidesmin E when treated with dihydrogen disulphide gave the new metabolite.

TL;DR: A case of extramedullary plasmacytoma of the colon is presented and should be included in the differential diagnosis of space‐occupying lesions of the large bowel.
Abstract: A case of extramedullary plasmacytoma of the colon is presented. This rare tumor should be included in the differential diagnosis of space-occupying lesions of the large bowel. Its relationship to multiple myeloma is uncertain. Some extramedullary plasmacytomas are apparently capable of paraprotein production. This was not observed in this case and is an area needing further investigation. Eosinophilic intranuclear inclusions, similar to those previously reported in multiple myeloma and macroglobulinemia of Waldenstrom, were present.

TL;DR: A 13‐year‐old child presented with clinical signs and symptoms, developing over a year, of a large posterior fossa tumor that distorted the fourth ventricle and bulged into its right lateral recess, and demonstrated a schwannoma.
Abstract: A 13‐year‐old child presented with clinical signs and symptoms, developing over a year, of a large posterior fossa tumor. In addition to obliteration of the right cerebellopontine angle, the mass distorted the fourth ventricle and bulged into its right lateral recess. Pathologic examination by light and electron microscopy demonstrated a schwannoma. This represents the eighth reported case of a solitary intracranial schwannoma of the acoustic nerve in a child.

TL;DR: All these fungi are capable of survival in the ovine rumen, according to a method of determination of oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide.
Abstract: Aspergillus fumigatus, Mucor rouxii, and Sporormia minima have been isolated from the rumen contents of sheep grazing permanent pasture at Nappan, Nova Scotia. To determine the ability of these fungi to survive and grow at the low oxygen partial pressure present in the rumen, a method of determination of oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide has been developed. The lowest partial pressures of oxygen and nitrogen that could be detected were 0.0005 cm Hg and the precision of the determination was ±0.001 cm Hg. Carbon dioxide was determined with slightly less precision than achieved for oxygen and nitrogen. Using this method, respiration was detected in cultures of all the fungi named at Hg and growth was observed at Hg in the case of M. rouxii. It is concluded that all these fungi are capable of survival in the ovine rumen.

TL;DR: A large, isolated, intra-abdominal gas cyst is described, which it is believed must have communicated with the lumen of the colon at an earlier stage of development.
Abstract: THE ORIGIN of intestinal gas has confounded physicians and patients alike for many centuries. Only a minor problem is present, however, when the gas is intraluminal and is freely passed by one of several avenues available. The finding of single large, isolated, intra-abdominal gas cysts, in patients who often are asymptomatic, is rare, and is poorly understood. Pneumatosis intestinalis, a disease of unknown etiology characterized by numerous gas-filled sessile or pedunculated cysts involving primarily the gastrointestinal tract, does not appear to be the cause of isolated intestinal gas cysts in most cases. Some cases in which the gas cysts are in int imate association with the sigmoid colon and are thought to represent a complication of diverticulitis have been reported. This report describes such a cyst, which we believe must have communicated with the lumen of the colon at an earlier stage of development.

TL;DR: The preferential inhibition of β-galactosidase synthesis observed in the presence of 5-fluorouracil, streptomycin, and subinhibitory concentrations of chloramphenicol was found to be caused by catabolite repression.
Abstract: Studies were made of the synthesis of β-galactosidase by Escherichia coli in the presence of 5-fluorouracil, streptomycin, and subinhibitory concentrations of chloramphenicol. The preferential inhibition of β-galactosidase synthesis observed in the presence of the above drugs was found to be caused by catabolite repression.

TL;DR: The ion kinetic energy (IKE) and mass spectra of 1- and 2-chloronapthalenes and seven dichoronaphthalenes have been recorded in this paper.
Abstract: The ion kinetic energy (IKE) and mass spectra of 1- and 2-chloronapthalenes and seven dichoronaphthalenes have been recorded and the spectra of each set of isomers are strikingly similar; comparison of the daughter ion peaks obtained from the IKE spectra indicate chlorine randomisation over at least one of the rings in the monosubstituted compounds and over both rings in the isomeric dichloronaphthalenes.
