Developments in the Scottish Pig Iron Trade, 1844–1848

Abstract: Between 1844 and 1848 the Scottish pig iron trade occupied a particularly important place not only in British but also in world economy. In 1830 Scotland produced only 37,000 tons of pig iron, or about 5 per cent of the total British output. By the mid-1840's it produced over 300,000 tons annually, or about 25 per cent of die British output. Of this increased output only one third was used in Scotland, while no less than one quarter left the United Kingdom for abroad. Such a rapid progress rested on peculiarly favorable geological and technical conditions.

Abstract: It is an honour and a pleasure to respond to the comments of J. Louis Martyn and Troels Engberg-Pedersen. Both of them have read my book with care, and have presented many of its central emphases with clarity and insight. The questions they raise are pertinent ones – as one would expect from the authors of two of the most interesting and innovative works of Pauline scholarship to have been published in recent years. I refer to Martyn's commentary on Galatians and Engberg-Pedersen's Paul and the Stoics – both, in their different ways, the kind of ground-breaking work that keeps the field of Pauline studies from succumbing entirely to an endless rehearsal of already familiar positions. I also note in passing that my two reviewers probably differ more sharply from each other than either of them does from me. It is not easy to harmonise Martyn's apocalyptic Paul with Engberg-Pedersen's Stoic one, and the difference tends to focus on issues of divine agency which recur in their responses to my own work.

Benchmarking in Developmental Robotics

Abstract: There is at present no standard benchmarking for assessing and comparing the various existing works in developmental robotics. Developmental robotics is more of a “basic science” research endeavour than mainstream robotics, which is more application focussed. For this reason benchmarking for developmental robotics will need a more scientific basis, rather than a specific application focus. The solution we propose is to benchmark developmental robotics efforts against human infant capabilities at various ages. The proposal here may allow the community to showcase their efforts by demonstration on common tasks, and so to enable the comparison of approaches. It may also provide an agenda of incremental targets for research in the field.

Abstract: Discusses the transfer of the Aberdeen Bestiary (a 13th century manuscript) into digital format for access on the World Wide Web. Briefly covers the background to the project before outlining the reasons for choosing photoCD as the method of digitization. Considers some of the problems encountered during the project including design and delivery issues and future developments.
