Inhibition of nerve stimulation-induced vasodilatation in corpora cavernosa of the pithed rat by blockade of nitric oxide synthase.

Abstract: 1. The effect of inhibition of nitric oxide synthase by NG-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) on nerve stimulation-induced vasodilation in corpora cavernosa was studied in the pithed rat. Corporal vasodilation was estimated by the increase in ratio (corpora cavernosal pressure/systemic blood pressure; CP/BP) following electrical stimulation of the sacral part of the spinal cord. 2. L-NAME (2, 5, 10 and 25 mg kg-1) caused an increase in BP and a dose-dependent inhibition of the rise in the CP/BP ratio following stimulation. 3. The inhibitory effect of L-NAME (25 mg kg-1) on the corporal response to spinal cord stimulation, as well as the pressor response, was partially prevented by prior administration of L- but not D-arginine (400 mg kg-1, i.v.). 4. L-NAME (20 mg kg-1, i.v.) did not inhibit the rise in corporal pressure resulting from direct intracavernosal administration of papaverine (400 micrograms over 2 min). However, this response was inhibited by 5-hydroxytryptamine (20 micrograms kg-1, i.v.). 5. The results are indicative of a role of nitric oxide (NO) in the corporal vasodilator response to erectile stimulation.

Familial clustering of classic Kaposi sarcoma.

Abstract: It is widely accepted that there is a causal association between Kaposi sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) and Kaposi sarcoma (KS). However, the majority of individuals infected with KSHV never develop KS. Here, we present a unique familial case of classic KS, in which the disease occurs in 4 siblings who have no recognized underlying immunodeficiency. We examine risk factors that could play a role in this condition, including KSHV infection, KSHV DNA load, genetic variants of KSHV, infection with additional viruses, interleukin-6-promoter polymorphism, and HLA genotype. We hypothesize that a genetic susceptibility to KS, in combination with KSHV infection, may play an important role in the presented familial case.

Burkitt's lymphoma of the oral cavity in Israel

Abstract: The clinical presentation of Burkitt's lymphoma in the maxillofacial area is variable. The objective of this study is to review and analyse all cases of Burkitt's lymphoma with oral or maxillofacial involvement diagnosed in our department. A retrospective review of patients with Burkitt's lymphoma in the facial area between the years 1978 and 1997 was undertaken. The patients, 8 male and 5 female, were from 7 to 50 years old (mean 15.3 years). Six patients were Stage I and 7 were Stage II. Five had abdominal involvement and 2 lymph node involvement besides the maxillofacial presentation. Three tumours were in the mandible, 3 in both mandible and maxilla, 2 in the palate, and 5 in the maxilla alone. In 5 patients the tumour presented as a facial swelling, in 3 as an exophytic mass, in 2 as an ulcer, 1 case presented as a hyperplastic lesion, and 2 were periapical lesions. Complaints included pain (7), swelling (5), and sensory disturbance (2). EBV titres were positive in 4 patients. Abdominal involvement was only seen in patients under 12 years old. All patients were treated with chemotherapy, while adjuvant radiotherapy was indicated in 3 cases. Follow-up of 1–20 years revealed a 2-year survival rate of 61.5%. It seems that the Israeli disease is between that of the African and American types, when considering age distribution.
