TL;DR: The 43,000-molecular-weight (43K) soluble glycoprotein was detected in sera of patients with paracoccidioidomycosis by the immunoblot technique by using as the probe rabbit monospecific antisera to this fraction.
Abstract: The 43,000-molecular-weight (43K) soluble glycoprotein was detected in sera of patients with paracoccidioidomycosis by the immunoblot technique by using as the probe rabbit monospecific antisera to this fraction The 43K antigen was present before treatment in sera of patients with the acute (juvenile) form; it started to disappear from circulation after 10 months of chemotherapy, and it was undetectable after 2 years of treatment In the chronic cases, the 43K antigen was detected in patients without treatment, and it was absent in the healed cases The detection of the 43K protein specific to Paracoccidioides brasiliensis may be important for its diagnostic value as well as for modulation of the host immune response

TL;DR: As these ants are keystone species and easily identified by nonspecialists, efforts should be made to integrate these into viable conservation programs.
Abstract: Leaf-cutting ants of the generaAcromyrmex andAtta are considered the principal polyphagous pests of the Neotropics Although some members of these genera are of economic importance, have a broad geographic distribution, and are extremely good colonizers, others are endemic and closely interact with native ecosystems. Control is generally practiced against any colony, irrespective of its taxonomic status. Indiscriminate control coupled with habitat destruction threatens endemic species with extinction, and, through habitat simplification, favors other pest species. As nests ofAtta are large, having several square meters of nest surface, the endemic taxa can be easily used as environmental indicators for natural ecosystems Likewise, the pest species can be used to detect environmental disturbance As these ants are keystone species and easily identified by nonspecialists, efforts should be made to integrate these into viable conservation programs

TL;DR: In this paper, a broad description of the environment and the fish, and arguments for the high diversity of fish fauna diversity are examined, and effects of dams on resident fish stocks and consequences for the small scale fisheries are discussed.
Abstract: Riverine fisheries in Brazil are reviewed. There is a broad description of the environment and the fish, and arguments for the high diversity of fish fauna diversity are examined. The country is divided into five large river basins and the fisheries are described in relation to the main fish species caught, the main gear employed, and the fishing strategies. Exotic species introduction is discussed along with strategies for fish stock management. Effects of dams on resident fish stocks and consequences for the small scale fisheries are discussed and compared with the effects of pollution.

TL;DR: The pathogenicity and immunogenicity of seven isolates of Paracoccidioides brasiliensis were compared and differences in the kinetics of antibody production elicited by the different fungal isolates were also observed.
Abstract: In this investigation the pathogenicity and immunogenicity of seven isolates of Paracoccidioides brasiliensis were compared. The pathogenicity of each isolate was determined by 50% lethal dose estimations and histopathology analysed during a 24-week-period. Four basic patterns of virulence could be defined after intraperitoneal infection of susceptible, genetically homogenous, B10.A mice, namely, slightly virulent (isolates Pb 265 and IVIC Pb 267), intermediate (isolates Pb 192, IVIC Pb 9 and Pb SN), virulent (isolate Pb 2052) and highly virulent (isolate Pb 18). The granulomas induced by the individual isolates were similar although the evolution of inflammation and the organs affected varied according to the isolate used. The immunogenicity of each P. brasiliensis isolate was evaluated by measuring IgG titres with an ELISA method. The intermediate and the slightly virulent isolates induced weak antibody production whereas isolates Pb 18 and Pb 2052 induced stronger specific humoral responses. Difference...

TL;DR: The data showed that this species presents high fecundity and is thus suitable for comercial culture and not related to either length and/or weight.
Abstract: In this paper, the fecundity in Macrobrachium acanthurus (Wiegmann, 1836) of the Ribeira de Iguape river (Southern Brazil) (Crustacea, Decapoda, Palaemonidae), is presented. The mean individual fecundity of the population was estimated. Fecundity was related to either length and/or weight. Our data showed that this species presents high fecundity and is thus suitable for comercial culture. The fecundity/length and fecundity/weight relationships obtained are: F = - 14 712 + 2 311,8 L and F = -1493,9 + 798,76 W

TL;DR: C-banding demonstrated positively stained heterochromatic blocks in almost every chromosome and a pattern of interstitial bands located in the same position in relation to the centromere on the long arm of a large number of chromosomes.
Abstract: Chromosomes of Moenkhausia sanctaefilomenae (10 males and 20 females) collected from a tributary of the Tiete River (Botucatu, S.P. Brazil) were examined using kidney and testicular cells. Both males and females presented 2n=50 chromosomes and 1 to 8 small supernumerary microchromosomes. C-banding demonstrated positively stained heterochromatic blocks in almost every chromosome and a pattern of interstitial bands located in the same position in relation to the centromere on the long arm of a large number of chromosomes. Two large NORs were detected in pair 19 of all the silver-stained metaphases; zero to 6 additional small NORs were detected in other chromosomes. A general survey of the occurrence of supernumerary chromosomes in fishes is presented.

TL;DR: S‐100 protein: Is it useful as a tumour marker in diagnostic immunocytochemistry?
Abstract: A heterogeneous group of 159 tumours was studied for the presence of S-100 protein by the immunoperoxidase technique in order to determine whether this marker may be of value in facilitating immunocytochemical diagnosis. Among cases of melanocytic and pigmented lesions, S-100 was widely distributed and demonstrated the strongest degrees of reactivity. S-100 protein was identified in virtually all nerve sheath tumours such as schwannomas, neurofibromas, myxoid sheath nerve tumour and also in some tumours of controversial histogenesis such as granular cell tumours. The great majority of carcinomas did not express S-100, with only two cases of breast carcinoma displaying focal S-100 staining. In a miscellaneous group of tumours S-100 was demonstrated in chordomas, myoepitheliomas and Wilms' tumour with Schwann cell differentiation. Despite its presence in a wide array of cell types, S-100 protein continues to be an extremely useful marker especially for soft tissue and peripheral nervous system tumours.

TL;DR: Comparison of data from cases of cystosarcoma phyllodes of the breast studied clinically and by fine‐needle aspiration (FNA) cytology and tumor histology indicates that little prognostic information can be obtained from FNA alone in most cases.
Abstract: Twenty-three cases of cystosarcoma phyllodes of the breast were studied clinically and by fine-needle aspiration (FNA) cytology as well as by tumor histology. The median patient age was 52 yr. The total actuarial survival at 5 yr was 90%, and the recurrence-free survival was 70%. A combination of stromal elements (tissue fragments and/or single spindle cells) and epithelial tissue was required to make the diagnosis on smear material. In FNA smears, stromal elements were absent in two cases, and ductal elements were not seen in three. Thus, the dimorphic pattern essential to this diagnosis was not present in five (22%) cases. An evaluation of tumor factors reported to be of prognostic significance was performed on histologic sections of resected tumors. Comparison of these data with FNA results indicates that little prognostic information can be obtained from FNA alone in most cases.

TL;DR: The distribution pattern of T lymphocytes in P. brasiliensis granulomas, with a predominance of helper phenotype, suggests that these cells are actively involved in the disease process.
Abstract: Immunohistochemical techniques using monoclonal antibodies to T lymphocyte subsets were used to characterize granulomas caused by Paracoccidioides brasiliensis. Punch biopsies of skin or mucosa from eight patients and of lymph nodes from two patients with disseminated paracoccidioidomycosis were studied. The T lymphocytes were distributed either in a localized pattern related to epithelioid granulomas or in a diffuse arrangement, predominantly around the vessels. In the granulomas, T cells formed a peripheral mantle surrounding central aggregates of macrophages. The majority of lymphocytes were T-helper cells with few suppressor cells. In contrast, patients presented with a decreased number of peripheral T-helper lymphocytes and a corresponding decrease in helper-suppressor cell ratios. There was no clear-cut relationship between tissue helper-suppressor cell ratios and the level of cellular immunodepression of the patients. The lowest P. brasiliensis antibody titers were detected in patients with the hig...

TL;DR: The authors discuss the possibility of the effect of a factor of snake venom in the genesis of hepatic necrosis and in the increased transaminase levels.
Abstract: Forty patients with a diagnosis of snake bite were studied at the Infectious and Parasitic Disease Service of the Faculty of Medicine of Botucatu. Thirty were males and 10 females, ranging in age from 16 to 70 years. All were farm laborers and 35 of them were bitten in the lower limbs. Two of the 9 patients seen more than 6 hours after the bite died. The low mortality rate (5%) observed could be explained by the early care provided, by the use of appropriate doses of anti-crotalus serum, parenteral hydration, urine alkalinization with sodium bicarbonate and induction of osmotic diuresis with a mannitol solution. Anatomopathological examination of one of the patients who died revealed extensive hepatic necrosis. The authors discuss the possibility of the effect of a factor of snake venom in the genesis of hepatic necrosis and in the increased transaminase levels.

TL;DR: The results confirm earlier suggestions that the retinal axons projecting to theGLv also project elsewhere and demonstrate that heterogeneity of retinal ganglion cells transmitters is evident even within a single retino-recipient nucleus such as the GLv.
Abstract: Immunohistochemical and retrograde tracing techniques were combined to study the retinal ganglion cells which project to the pars ventralis of the lateral geniculate nucleus (GLv) in the pigeon. Using two different fluorescent tracers, two histochemically-distinct populations of ganglion cells were found to project to both the GLv and the optic tectum. The first population of ganglion cells exhibited tyrosine hydroxylase-like immunoreactivity and represented about 20% of all ganglion cells which were retrogradely labeled from the GLv. The second population of ganglion cells showed substance P-like immunoreactivity and represented about 13% of all ganglion cells projecting to the GLv. These results confirm earlier suggestions that the retinal axons projecting to the GLv also project elsewhere and demonstrate that heterogeneity of retinal ganglion cells transmitters is evident even within a single retino-recipient nucleus such as the GLv.

TL;DR: The combination of albendazole and dextrochloropheniramine seems to be a promising treatment for neurocysticercosis, especially at the doses used for group III, i.e. 15 mg/kg/d of al bendazoles for 21 d followed by 20-30 mg/ kg/d for 30 d after a one-week interval.
Abstract: We evaluated the use of albendazole in combination with dextrochloropheniramine for the treatment of neurocysticercosis. Forty patients were treated from September 1984 to December 1987; each was diagnosed on the basis of clinical, epidemiological, cerebrospinal fluid and tomographic data. Patients were divided into 3 groups according to the albendazole treatment schedule. Group I received 10-15 mg/kg albendazole daily; group II received 15-25 mg/kg/d; group III received 15-30 mg/kg/d. Each patient also received simultaneously 18 mg/d of dextrochloropheniramine. Clinical improvement was observed in 4 patients in group I (50.0%), 10 patients in group II (83.3%) and 18 patients in group III (94.7%). Three patients in group II, and one in group III, died. Group III patients showed a significant improvement in quality of life compared to the other 2 groups. Side effects were insignificant in all groups. The combination of albendazole and dextrochloropheniramine seems to be a promising treatment for neurocysticercosis, especially at the doses used for group III, i.e. 15 mg/kg/d of albendazole for 21 d followed by 20-30 mg/kg/d for 30 d after a one-week interval, in combination with 18 mg/d of dextrochloropheniramine.

TL;DR: The laboratory LD50 values of organophosphate, carbamate, organochlorine (including cyclodienes) and pyrethroid insecticides were determined for workers of Trigona spinipes using Bliss' method (1935).
Abstract: SummaryThe laboratory LD50 values of organophosphate, carbamate, organochlorine (including cyclodienes) and pyrethroid insecticides were determined for workers of Trigona spinipes (F., 1793). Determinations used topical application techniques from which dose-mortality was derived using Bliss' method (1935). In order of decreasing toxicity the LD50 values for workers, in μg/bee were as follows: heptachlor, 0·0168; dieldrin, 0·0289; Cypermethrin, 0·0704; permethrin, 0·0724; parathion, 0·0956; lindane, 0·1331; methomyl, 0·1402; dicrotophos, 0·685; endosulfan, 0·2097; malathion, 0·2649; acephate, 0·4234; carbaryl, 0·7472; fenvalerate, 1·0880. The insecticides tested were highly toxic to T. spinipes.

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that under adverse environmental conditions P. brasiliensis mycelial form produces chlamydospores within a short period of time.
Abstract: To investigate the role of some adverse environmental conditions in chlamy-dospore formation by the mycelial form of P brasiliensis, we cultured four P brasiliensis isolates (18, Bt4, 1183, Pb9) at 25°C within solid agar medium either rich or poor in nutrients Isolates 18 and 1183 were also cultured under anaerobiosis in a nitrogen atmosphere Isolate 18 produced great number of terminal and intercalary chlamydospore after 7-10 days of culture in a medium poor in nutrients (2% agar with 01% dextrose and polypepton) The three other isolates also produced chlamydospores under the same conditions, but in lower numbers Chlamydospore production by isolate 18 was abolished when the fungus was cultured in two agar media rich in nutrients (brain heart infusion and potato dextrose agar) Anaerobic incubation of isolate 18 under an atmosphere of N2 showed small mycelial outgrowth with numerous chlamydospores At the electron microscopical level, the chlamydospores showed one or various nuclei and numerous mitochondria, indicating great potential for further development Accordingly, chlamydospores produced multiple budding after only 24 h incubation at 35°C The results demonstrate that under adverse environmental conditions P brasiliensis mycelial form produces chlamydospores within a short period of time

TL;DR: In this paper, a lista de escravos transportados do porto de Luanda entre 1734 and 1769 was studied, and it was shown that 73% seriam crias de pe, declinando o numero de criancas na segunda metade do seculo XVIII.

TL;DR: By exposing cotton plants to a 15N enriched solution for 5 periods of 30 days each in a temperature controled greenhouse, the accumulation and redistribution of N within the plant was followed in order to define the main N sources and sinks for each period.
Abstract: Although attempts have been made in developing soil and plant analysis procedures for cotton (Goseipium hirsutum) , N nutrition is not completely understood. To the present it has not been possible to predict when the maximum N utilization efficiency could be achieved. By exposing cotton plants to a 15N enriched solution for 5 periods of 30 days each in a temperature controled greenhouse, the accumulation and redistribution of N within the plant was followed in order to define the main N sources and sinks for each period. The main N source within the cotton plant after the first square stage was the leaves. Stems and burs acted as temporary storage organs remobilizing N to the seeds late in the growing season, while the roots were fairly neutral. Dry matter accumulation during the reproductive stage was not related to N redistribution in the plant, except for bolls. So at this stage, dry matter accumulation was not a important component in the N source‐sink relationship within the cotton plant.

TL;DR: DDT levels were consistently lower in women who had nursed 3 or more children, than those with 1 or 2, and HCH content was higher in younger women than older, and in houses that had been sprayed, especially in rural zones, where spraying programs are run by the public health authorities.
Abstract: The use of organochlorine insecticides has been common since the forties. But this has become a serious problem of public health, due to the fact that insecticides accumulate in tissues owing to their fat-soluble character, their persistence in the environment and their accumulation in the food-chain. The continuous development of gas chromatographic techniques allowed the detection of ppb levels of these insecticide residues. Studies with laboratory animals have been useful to establish the toxicity of these compounds. Human milk can be used as an evaluation index of environmental contamination by these insecticides, although the main objective of its analysis is to determine the amounts ingested by children. When evaluating the levels of organochlorine insecticides in human milk it is useful to establish where the mothers live. Theoretically, mothers who live in a rural area have much more contact with these insecticides, because they work directly in agriculture. Therefore, the risk of exposure by their nursing children will be even greater. In Brazil, farmers do not have enough knowledge to measure the risks brought about by their indiscriminate use. In addition, government programs for the control of rural endemic diseases still make use of DDT and HCH on a large scale.
