TL;DR: The relative increase of SCC of the trunk and upper limbs is a plausible reflection of intentional tanning.
Abstract: There is a strong relationship between squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and exposure to ultraviolet radiation in terms of accumulated exposure. In this study, data from the Swedish Cancer Registry are surveyed to discern a reflection of behavioral and societal changes in relative distribution of SCC by body site. Data for the time period 1960-2004, including a total of 66 221 cases (56 669 people) were analyzed by body site for age and gender cohorts. The age-standardized (European population) incidence per 100 000 of SCC in the year 2004 was 30.4 in males and 15.4 in females. In the year 1960, the corresponding incidences were 7.7 and 3.8; that is, SCC has become four times more frequent in Sweden for both sexes during this period. The standardized incidence of SCC increased on all body sites except eyelids (men and women) and ears (women). Head tumors dominated among patients aged 70 years or more and diagnosed 1960-1964. Among patients less than 70 years old at diagnosis in 2000-2004, tumors of the trunk and limbs dominated. A relative increase of tumors of the scalp and neck was observed in all age groups (men), and of tumors of the trunk and upper limbs in all age groups and both sexes except among patients aged more than 90 years of age. In contrast, a relative decrease of tumors on the face (including the ears) was seen in all age groups. The relative increase of SCC of the trunk and upper limbs is a plausible reflection of intentional tanning.

TL;DR: Women with high physical activity at both 18‐30 years and during recent years did not have a stronger protection than those with isolated high activity late in life, after accounting for recent activity.
Abstract: BACKGROUND: A growing body of literature suggests that physical activity may be a protective factor against hip fracture. METHODS: To study the association between hip fracture risk and recreationa ...

TL;DR: The Örebro prevention programme as currently delivered in Sweden does not appear to reduce or delay youth drunkenness.
Abstract: Aims: This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of the Orebro prevention program (OPP), an alcohol misuse prevention programme that aims to reduce youth drinking by changing parental behaviour. Design: Cluster-randomized trial, with schools randomly assigned to the OPP or no intervention. Setting: Forty municipal schools in 13 counties in Sweden. Participants: 1752 students in the 7th grade and 1314 parents were assessed at baseline. Students' follow-up rates in the 8th and 9th grades were 92.1% and 88.4% respectively. Measurements: Classroom questionnaires to students and postal questionnaires to parents were administered before randomization and 12 and 30 months post-baseline. Findings: Two-level logistic regression models, under four different methods of addressing the problem of loss to follow up, revealed a statistically significant programme effect for only one out of three drinking outcomes under one loss-to-follow-up method, and that effect was only observed at the 12-month follow up. Conclusions: The Orebro prevention programme as currently delivered in Sweden does not appear to reduce or delay youth drunkenness. Language: en

TL;DR: Maternal smoking during pregnancy and teenage smoking are associated with indices of airway obstruction at age 16 years and adolescent smoking appears to be associated with reduced FEV1/FVC ratios and increased peripheral airway resistance.
Abstract: Maternal smoking during pregnancy is associated with impaired lung function among young children, but less is known about long-term effects and the impact of adolescents9 own smoking. We investigated the influence of maternal smoking during pregnancy, secondhand smoke exposure and adolescent smoking on lung function at age 16 years. The BAMSE (Barn/Child, Allergy, Milieu, Stockholm, Epidemiology) birth cohort collected information on participants9 tobacco smoke exposure through repeated questionnaires, and measured saliva cotinine concentrations at age 16 years. Participants performed spirometry and impulse oscillometry (IOS) at age 16 years (n=2295). Exposure to maternal smoking during pregnancy was associated with reduced forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV 1 )/forced vital capacity (FVC) ratio of −1.1% (95% CI −2.0 to −0.2%). IOS demonstrated greater resistance at 5–20 Hz ( R 5–20 ) in participants exposed to maternal smoking during pregnancy. Adolescents who smoked had reduced FEV 1 /FVC ratios of −0.9% (95% CI −1.8 to −0.1%) and increased resistance of 6.5 Pa·L –1 ·s (95% CI 0.7 to 12.2 Pa·L –1 ·s) in R 5–20 . Comparable associations for FEV 1 /FVC ratio were observed for cotinine concentrations, using ≥12 ng·mL −1 as a cut-off for adolescent smoking. Maternal smoking during pregnancy was associated with lower FEV 1 /FVC ratios and increased airway resistance. In addition, adolescent smoking appears to be associated with reduced FEV 1 /FVC ratios and increased peripheral airway resistance.

TL;DR: The study indicates that an awareness and joint discussion of incompatibilities between the two participants' private theories might be a substantial contribution to the process of recovery from psychosis.
Abstract: Private theories about psychosis, its background, and cure were studied using narratives of first-time psychotic patients and their therapists. Both patients and their therapists were interviewed on three occasions over a period of 1 1/2 years. Three cases were chosen as dyads in point in order to highlight different relations between the patient's and the therapist's private theories, different patterns of recovery from psychosis, and different outcomes. The cases are contrasted by paired comparisons. The study indicates that an awareness and joint discussion of incompatibilities between the two participants' private theories might be a substantial contribution to the process of recovery from psychosis.
