TL;DR: Convolutional neural network (CNN), constituting the main theme of this study, has been proposed with different spatial window sizes in RGB color spaces and performs superior than other pixel classification methods including SVM and k-Nearest Neighbour.
Abstract: In this work, classification of cellular structures in the high resolutional histopathological images and the discrimination of cellular and non-cellular structures have been investigated. The cell classification is a very exhaustive and time-consuming process for pathologists in medicine. The development of digital imaging in histopathology has enabled the generation of reasonable and effective solutions to this problem. Morever, the classification of digital data provides easier analysis of cell structures in histopathological data. Convolutional neural network (CNN), constituting the main theme of this study, has been proposed with different spatial window sizes in RGB color spaces. Hence, to improve the accuracies of classification results obtained by supervised learning methods, spatial information must also be considered. So, spatial dependencies of cell and non-cell pixels can be evaluated within different pixel neighborhoods in this study. In the experiments, the CNN performs superior than other pixel classification methods including SVM and k-Nearest Neighbour (k-NN). At the end of this paper, several possible directions for future research are also proposed.

TL;DR: This multicenter study aimed to determine optimal absolute and relative thresholds of intraoperative amplitude recovery heralding normal early postoperative vocal fold function, both after segmental type 1 and after global type 2 loss of signal (LOS).
Abstract: OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS This multicenter study aimed to 1) evaluate early postoperative vocal fold function in relation to intraoperative amplitude recovery, and 2) determine optimal absolute and relative thresholds of intraoperative amplitude recovery heralding normal early postoperative vocal fold function, both after segmental type 1 and after global type 2 loss of signal (LOS). STUDY DESIGN Prospective outcome study. METHODS This study, encompassing nine surgical centers from four countries, correlated intraoperative amplitude recovery with early postoperative vocal fold function using receiver operating characteristic analysis. RESULTS Included in this study were 68 patients, 48 women and 20 men, who sustained transient recurrent laryngeal nerve injury during thyroid surgery under continuous intraoperative nerve monitoring. Early transient vocal fold palsy was seen in 18 (64%) of 28 patients with ipsilateral segmental LOS type 1, and in 10 (25%) of 40 patients with ipsilateral global LOS type 2. On receiver operating characteristic analysis, relative amplitude thresholds were superior to absolute amplitude thresholds in predicting vocal fold function after LOS type 2 (area under the curve [AUC]: 0.83 vs. 0.65; P = .01 vs. P = .15; Youden index 44% and 253 µV) and LOS type 1 (AUC: 0.96 vs. 0.97; P < .001 each; Youden index 49% and 455 µV). Amplitude recovery ≥50% of baseline after LOS always indicated intact vocal fold function. CONCLUSIONS When the nerve amplitude recovers ≥50% of baseline after segmental LOS type 1 or global LOS type 2, it is appropriate to extend completion thyroidectomy to the other side during the same session. TL;DR: In this article, the critical micelle concentration (CMC), micelle ionization degree (α), and Gibbs free energy of micellization (∆G 1 mic) of the gemini surfactants and the monomeric cationic surfactant DTAB and CTAB have been determined by means of electric conductivity measurements.
Abstract: In this study, the gemini surfactants of the alkanediyl-α-ω-bis(alkyl dimethyl ammonium) dibromide type, on the one hand, with different alkyl groups containing m carbon atoms and an ethanediyl spacer, referred to as “m-2-m” (m = 10, 12 and 16) and, on the other hand, with n-C16 alkyl groups and different spacers containing s carbon atoms, referred to as “16-s-16” (s = 2, 6, 10 and Ar (8)) have been synthesized, purified and characterized. The critical micelle concentration (CMC), micelle ionization degree (α) and Gibbs free energy of micellization (∆G mic) of these surfactants and the monomeric cationic surfactants DTAB and CTAB have been determined by means of electric conductivity measurements. In addition, the temperature dependence of the CMC was determined for the 10-2-10 gemini surfactant. The CMCs of the gemini surfactants are found to be much lower than those of the corresponding monomeric surfactants and the effect of the hydrophobic alkyl chain length is more important than that of the spacer. The CMC of 16-s-16 passes through a maximum of (or around) s = 6 and then decreases for s = 10. The presence of a maximum CMC is explained by the contribution of a change of conformation of the surfactant with increasing spacer chain length. The changes of α with s and m are found qualitatively similar to those found for CMC values. The values of ∆G mic are more negative for the dimers than for the monomers and also change with an increasing spacer carbon number, as CMC values do. The thermodynamic parameters of micellization indicate that the micellization of 10-2-10 is enthalpy driven.
