TL;DR: Simulation studies show that two different portable and low-cost approaches for continuous monitoring of water quality: miniboats loaded with sondes with probes and wireless sensor network- (WSN-) based monitoring system can be used to monitor water quality at drinking water reservoirs such as dams and holding ponds.
Abstract: Water quality refers to the physical, chemical, and biological characteristics of water, and it is a measure of the condition of water relative to any human need or purpose. A particular problem with measuring the condition of water quality at drinking water reservoirs is the requirement of collecting a large number of samples. To handle this problem, we focus on the practical use of two different portable and low-cost approaches for continuous monitoring of water quality: miniboats loaded with sondes with probes and wireless sensor network- (WSN-) based monitoring system. These approaches bring several advantages over traditional monitoring systems in terms of cost, portability, and applicability. Our simulation studies show that these systems can be used to monitor water quality at drinking water reservoirs such as dams and holding ponds. Field tests to prove the effectiveness of the proposed systems are in progress.

TL;DR: Supracricoid partial laryngectomy procedures (CHEP and CHP) are possible alternatives to total larynGEctomy in the treatment of selected advanced glottic and glottosupraglottic carcinomas.
Abstract: Sixty-eight patients who presented with glottic and glottosupraglottic squamous cell carcinoma and who were managed in this department with supracricoid partial laryngectomy (SCPL) with either cricohyoidoepiglottopexy (CHEP) or cricohyoidopexy (CHP), were retrospectively reviewed. The authors analysed the functional and oncological results of the patients. The median follow-up period was 62 months. The average times until decannulation and nasogastric feeding tube removal were 27.7 and 26.4 days, respectively. All patients were successfully decannulated. All patients were able to swallow, but one patient was unable to swallow and had recurrent aspiration. Better functional results were achieved in patients managed with CHEP procedure than the patients managed with CHP procedure. The five-year absolute and cause-specific actuarial survival rates (Kaplan-Meier method) were 78.6 per cent and 93.9 per cent, respectively. The five-year actuarial local control and nodal control rates were 89.5 per cent and 90.4 per cent, respectively. Local recurrence was statistically more likely in patients with positive resection margins (p <0.006). Overall, local control and laryngeal preservation were achieved in 95.6 per cent and 89.7 per cent, respectively. Supracricoid partial laryngectomy procedures (CHEP and CHP) are possible alternatives to total laryngectomy in the treatment of selected advanced glottic and glottosupraglottic carcinomas.

TL;DR: The case of a 36‐yr‐old woman complaining of nausea and insomnia and Epstein–Barr virus (EBV) was detected in the tumor by in situ hybridization, and IPT of the spleen was diagnosed.
Abstract: Inflammatory pseudotumor (IPT) of the spleen is a rare benign tumor with unknown etiology. It causes problems in the diagnosis because of mimicking some hematopoetic malignancies. Here we report the case of a 36-yr-old woman complaining of nausea and insomnia. Laboratory investigations were limited to increase of leukocyte and thrombocyte count. Ultrasonography and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging showed circumscribed solid lobulated mass, measuring about 6.5 cm in diameter, located in the dorsal region of the spleen. Splenectomy was performed with the differential diagnosis including hamartoma and lymphoma of the spleen. Histological examination of the sharply demarcated splenic mass consisted of myofibroblasts and admixture of inflammatory cells. Immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization were performed. IPT of the spleen was diagnosed. Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) was detected in the tumor by in situ hybridization. This rare entity is presented because of its clinical, radiological and pathological difficulties in the differential diagnosis.

TL;DR: It is concluded that TQ therapy causes morphologic improvement on neurodegeneration in frontal cortex after chronic toluene exposure in rats.
Abstract: The aim of this study was designed to evaluate the possible protective effects of thymoquinone (TQ) on the neuronal injury in the frontal cortex after chronic toluene exposure in rats. The rats were randomly allotted into one of three experimental groups: A (control), B (toluene treated) and C (toluene treated with TQ); each group contain 10 animals. Control group received 1ml normal saline solution and toluene treatment was performed by inhalation of 3,000 ppm toluene, in a 8 h/day and 6 day/week order for 12 weeks. The rats in TQ treated group was given TQ (50 mg/kg body weight) once a day orally for 12 weeks starting just after toluene exposure. Tissue samples were obtained for histopathological investigation. To date, no histopathological changes of neurodegeneration in the frontal cortex after chronic toluene exposure in rats by TQ treatment have been reported. In this study, the morphology of neurons in the TQ treatment group was well protected. Chronic toluene exposure caused severe degenerative changes, shrunken cytoplasma, severely dilated cisternae of endoplasmic reticulum, markedly swollen mitochondria with degenerated cristae and nuclear membrane breakdown with chromatin disorganization in neurons of the frontal cortex. We conclude that TQ therapy causes morphologic improvement on neurodegeneration in frontal cortex after chronic toluene exposure in rats. We believe that further preclinical research into the utility of TQ may indicate its usefulness as a potential treatment on neurodegeneration after chronic toluene exposure in rats.
