TL;DR: The challenges of NDN-IoT caching are identified with the aim to develop a new hybrid strategy for efficient data delivery and it is observed that the proposed hybrid strategy outperformed to achieve a higher caching performance ofNDN-based IoT scenarios.
Abstract: Internet of Things (IoT) and Named Data Network (NDN) are innovative technologies to meet up the future Internet requirements. NDN is considered as an enabling approach to improving data dissemination in IoT scenarios. NDN delivers in-network caching, which is the most prominent feature to provide fast data dissemination as compared to Internet Protocol (IP) based communication. The proper integration of caching placement strategies and replacement policies is the most suitable approach to support IoT networks. It can improve multicast communication which minimizes the delay in responding to IoT-based environments. Besides, these approaches are playing a most significant role in increasing the overall performance of NDN-based IoT networks. To this end, in this paper, the challenges of NDN-IoT caching are identified with the aim to develop a new hybrid strategy for efficient data delivery. The proposed strategy is comparatively and extensively studied with NDN-IoT caching strategies through an extensive simulation in terms of average latency, cache hit ratio and average stretch ratio. From the simulation findings, it is observed that the proposed hybrid strategy outperformed to achieve a higher caching performance of NDN-based IoT scenarios.

TL;DR: The protective effect of melatonin against the damage inflicted by reactive oxygen species during brain hypoxia was investigated in newborn rats using biochemical parameters.
Abstract: Background: It is known that oxygen-derived free radicals play an important role in the pathogenesis of brain injury. Melatonin is a powerful scavenger of the oxygen free radicals. In this study, the protective effect of melatonin against the damage inflicted by reactive oxygen species during brain hypoxia was investigated in newborn rats using biochemical parameters. Methods: For biochemical analyses, the levels of lipid peroxidation product (malondialdehyde ([MDA]), levels of reduced glutathione (GSH) and the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) were estimated. Results: After the third day of brain hypoxia, the brain levels of MDA increased. Pretreatment of animals with melatonin abolished the rise in MDA induced by hypoxia. GSH concentration did not increase by pretreatment with melatonin. Additonally, the activities of two antioxidative enzymes (SOD and CAT) decreased after the experimental period with melatonin only preventing the change of CAT. The activity of SOD was not influenced by melatonin administration as expected. Conclusion: In this experimental study, exogenously administered melatonin effectively protected against brain injury by oxidative stress. This protective effect of melatonin may be due to its direct scavenger activity and activation of CAT. Thus, melatonin may potentially be useful in the treatment of neurodegenerative conditions that may involve free radical production, such as perinatal hypoxia.

TL;DR: Augmented DC-expressed M MP-1 and MMP-3 in CAM-complicated pregnancies may promote PTD via decidual, fetal membrane, and cervical extracellular matrix degradation through degradation of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) and proteolytic activity.
Abstract: Context: Chorioamnionitis (CAM)-elicited preterm delivery (PTD) is associated with elevated amniotic fluid levels of IL-1β and TNF-α. We hypothesized that IL-1β and TNF-α may induce matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-1 and MMP-3 activity to promote PTD by degrading decidual and fetal membranes and cervical extracellular matrix. Objective: Our objective was to evaluate: 1) MMP-1 and MMP-3 expression in decidual sections from uncomplicated term, idiopathic preterm, and CAM-complicated deliveries, and 2) the separate and interactive effects of IL-1β, TNF-α, medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA), and a p38 MAPK inhibitor (SB203580) on MMP-1 and MMP-3 expression in term decidual cells (DCs). Interventions and Main Outcome Measures: Decidua were immunostained for MMP-1 and MMP-3. Cultured term DCs were incubated with estradiol (E2) or E2 plus MPA with or without IL-1β or TNF-α with or without SB203580. ELISA and Western blotting assessed secreted MMP-1 and MMP-3 levels, quantitative real-time RT-PCR assessed mRNA level...

TL;DR: The efficiency of localization and navigation performance of the proposed UAV-aided unattended WSN deployment system is evaluated to show that UAVs can be used to deploy WSNs after disasters to monitor environmental conditions.
Abstract: This paper presents design strategies of using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to deploy wireless sensor networks (WSNs) for post-disaster monitoring. Natural disasters are unforeseeable events which cannot be prevented. But some recovery procedures can be followed to minimize their effects. Post-disaster monitoring is important to estimate the effects of disasters, which in turn is used to determine recovery procedures to be followed. We propose an UAV-aided unattended WSN deployment system. The system is a post-disaster solution which can be used anywhere required. In this study, we mainly evaluate the efficiency of localization and navigation performance of the proposed system. Our simulation studies with an AirRobot quadrotor helicopter in Unified System for Automation and Robot Simulation (USARSim) simulation platform show that UAVs can be used to deploy WSNs after disasters to monitor environmental conditions. Future work includes implementing the system using a hexarotor helicopter.
