TL;DR: It is demonstrated that PNI, calculated based on serum albumin level and lymphocyte count, is an independent prognostic factor for mortality in patients with PE.
Abstract: The prognostic impact of nutritional status in patients with pulmonary embolism (PE) is poorly understood. A well-accepted nutritional status parameter, prognostic nutritional index (PNI), which was first demonstrated to be valuable in patients with cancer and gastrointestinal surgery, was introduced to patients with PE. Our aim was to evaluate the predictive value of PNI in outcomes of patients with PE. We evaluated the in-hospital and long-term (53.8 ± 5.4 months) prognostic impact of PNI on 251 patients with PE. During a median follow-up of 53.8 ± 5.4 months, 27 (11.6%) patients died in hospital course and 31 (13.4%) died in out-of-hospital course. The patients with lower PNI had significantly higher in-hospital and long-term mortality. The Cox proportional hazard analyses showed that PNI was associated with an increased risk of all-cause death for both unadjusted model and adjusted for all covariates. Our study demonstrated that PNI, calculated based on serum albumin level and lymphocyte count, is an independent prognostic factor for mortality in patients with PE.

TL;DR: Cladistically analysed anatomical data support the hypothesis that Ophrys and Dactylorhiza are monophyletic, but contrast the triphyletic states of Orchis, which is very likely to be the reason for uncovering the otherOrchis taxa.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the effect of vertical partitioning on laminar natural convection in an enclosure divided by a partition with a finite thickness and conductivity, and showed that the presence of a vertical partition has a considerable effect on the circulation intensity, and therefore, the heat transfer characteristics across the enclosure.
Abstract: This numerical study looks at laminar natural convection in an enclosure divided by a partition with a finite thickness and conductivity. The enclosure is assumed to be heated using a uniform heat flux on a vertical wall, and cooled to a constant temperature on the opposite wall. The governing equations in the vorticity-stream function formulation are solved by employing a polynomial-based differential quadrature method. The results show that the presence of a vertical partition has a considerable effect on the circulation intensity, and therefore, the heat transfer characteristics across the enclosure. The average Nusselt number decreases with an increase of the distance between the hot wall and the partition. With a decrease in the thermal resistance of the partition, the average Nusselt number shows an increasing trend and a peak point is detected. If the thermal resistance of the partition further declines, the average Nusselt number begins to decrease asymptotically to a constant value. The partition thickness has little effect on the average Nusselt number.

TL;DR: The results support the conclusion that QE treatment may decrease blood glucose and increase plasma insulin, calcium, and magnesium and may also be effective in bone mineral metabolism, biomechanical strength, and bone structure in STZ‐induced diabetic rats.
Abstract: This study was designed to investigate the effect of quercetin (QE) on bone minerals and biomechanics in insulin-dependent diabetic rats Diabetes was induced by 50 mg kg−1 intraperitoneal streptozotocin (STZ) in a single dose The rats were randomly allotted into four experimental groups: A (control), B (non-diabetic + QE), C (diabetic), and D (diabetic + QE) each containing 10 animals The diabetic rats received QE (15 mg kg−1 day−1) for 4 weeks following 8 weeks of STZ injection Blood samples were taken to determine glucose, insulin, calcium, and magnesium levels The rats' femora were assessed biomechanically at femoral mid-diaphysis and neck It was found that QE treatment increased insulin, calcium, and magnesium levels Three-point bending of the femoral mid-diaphysis and necks showed significantly lower maximum load values (Fmax) in animals in the STZ group than the QE + STZ or control groups (p < 005) The results support the conclusion that QE treatment may decrease blood glucose and increase plasma insulin, calcium, and magnesium QE treatment may also be effective in bone mineral metabolism, biomechanical strength, and bone structure in STZ-induced diabetic rats Copyright © 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd
