Effects of programmed physical activity on body composition in post-pubertal schoolchildren

Abstract: OBJECTIVE: To assess body composition modifications in post-pubertal schoolchildren after practice of a physical activity program during one school year. METHODS: The sample consisted of 386 students aged between 15 and 17 years and divided into two groups: the study group (SG) comprised 195 students and the control group (CG), 191. The SG was submitted to a physical activity program and the CG attended conventional physical education classes. Body composition was assessed using body mass index (BMI), percentage of body fat (%BF), fat mass (FM), and lean mass (LM). RESULTS: A positive effect of the physical activity program on body composition in the SG (p < 0.001) was observed, as well as on the interaction time x group in all the variables analyzed in both genders. A reduction in %BF (mean of differences = -5.58%) and waist circumference (-2.33 cm), as well as an increase in LM (+2.05 kg) were observed in the SG for both genders, whereas the opposite was observed in the CG. CONCLUSION: The practice of programmed physical activity promotes significant reduction of body fat in post-pubertal schoolchildren.

Evaluation of larvicidal activity of the methanolic extracts of Piper alatabaccum branches and P. tuberculatum leaves and compounds isolated against Anopheles darlingi

Abstract: Piper is a notable genus among Piperaceae due to their secondary metabolites such as lignans, amides, esters and long chain fatty acids used as anti-herbivore defenses with comparable effects of pyrethroids, that holds a promise in insect control, including malaria vectors such as Anopheles darlingi, the main vector in the North of Brazil. Methanolic extracts of Piper tuberculatum Jacq., Piperaceae, and P. alatabaccum Trel. & Yunck., Piperaceae, and some isolated compounds, i.e, 3,4,5-trimetoxy-dihydrocinamic acid, dihydropiplartine; piplartine, piplartine-dihydropiplartine and 5,5',7-trimetoxy-3',4'-metilenodioxiflavone were tested as larvicides against A. darlingi. The Lethal Concentrations (LC50 and LC90) of methanolic extracts were 194 and 333 ppm for P. tuberculatum and 235 and 401 ppm for P. alatabacum, respectively. Isolated compounds had lower LC values, e.g. the LC50 and LC90 of the piplartine-dihidropiplartine isolated from both plant species was 40 and 79 ppm, respectively.

Perfil dos casos notificados de sífilis congênita

Abstract: Este estudo analisou a incidencia de sifilis congenita, os exames para diagnostico e tratamento fornecido aos recem-nascidos. Estudo epidemiologico descritivo, do tipo levantamento retrospectivo, com abordagem quantitativa. A coleta de dados foi realizada em dezembro de 2015 no Sistema de Informacoes e Agravos de Notificacoes, fornecido pelo Departamento de Vigilância Epidemiologica e Ambiental da Secretaria Municipal de Saude de Porto Velho. A incidencia de sifilis congenita foi crescente durante o periodo estudado (2009 a 2014) de 0,92 casos para 8,65/1.000 nascidos vivos. Em relacao as gestantes, 157 (79,29%) realizaram o pre-natal, 119 (60,10%) foram diagnosticadas durante o pre-natal e 109 (55,1%) tratadas inadequadamente. Quanto aos recem-nascidos, 99 (50,00%) eram do sexo feminino, 126 (63,64%) pardas, 153 (77,27%) nasceram assintomaticas e 129 (65,15%) tratadas com penicilina G cristalina. Neste sentido, verificou-se que em Porto Velho ha desafios quanto ao diagnostico precoce e tratamento adequado das gestantes, parceiros e recem-nascidos.

Temporal and spatial distribution of young Brachyplatystoma spp. (Siluriformes: Pimelodidae) along the rapids stretch of the Madeira River (Brazil) before the construction of two hydroelectric dams

Abstract: Monthly (April 2009 to May 2010) bottom-trawl sampling for Brachyplatystoma species along the rapids stretch of the Madeira River in Brazil revealed that Brachyplatystoma rousseauxii larvae and juveniles were present in low abundances in all areas and during all hydrological periods. The presence of larvae and juveniles throughout the hydrological cycle suggests asynchronous spawning in the headwaters of the Madeira River.
