Abstract: Seventy-five patients with complete bowel wall penetration and/or positive lymph nodes at the time of initial “curative surgery” had planned single or multiple reoperations at the University of Minnesota. Tumor due to rectal carcinoma was found in 52. Four were converted to disease-free status. Areas of failure were analyzed in detail. Distant metastasis (DM) alone was uncommon. Peritoneal seeding (PS) was rare. Local failure and/or regional lymph node metastases (LF-RF) occurred as the only failure in nearly 50% of the failure group and as some component in 92%. Patterns of failure are fairly predictable if anatomical factors and initial pathologic extent of tumor are considered. Postoperative irradiation may be a logical adjuvant in view of the high percentage of local-regional failures and the ability to identify subgroups of patients at highest risk for such failure.

Abstract: Hemodynamic predictors of myocardial oxygen consumption (MVO2) during static and dynamic exercise were examined in ten normal subjects. Studies were done under the following circumstances: 1) during upright bicycle exercise at an average heart rate of 147 beats/min, 2) during static exercise with an isometric load in the left hand equal to 17% of the maximal voluntary contraction (MVC), and 3) during combined dynamic exercise (average heart rate 147 beats/min) and static exercise using 17% MVC of the left hand. Mean myocardial blood flow (MBF) was 181 ml/100 gm LV/min during dynamic exercise, 98 ml/100 gm LV/min during static exercise, and 201 ml/100 gm LV/min during combined static and dynamic exercise. Addition of a static load to the dynamic load resulted in a higher blood pressure (average 12 mm Hg), MVO2 and MBF than during dynamic exercise alone. Abstract: Soybean lectin labeled with fluorescein isothiocyanate combined specifically with all but 3 of 25 strains of the soybean-nodulating bacterium Rhizobium japonicum. The lectin did not bind to any of 23 other strains representative of rhizobia that do not nodulate soybeans. The evidence suggests that an interaction between legume lectins and Rhizobium cells may account for the specificity expressed between rhizobia and host plant in the initiation of the nitrogen-fixing symbiosis.

Abstract: A 25-year study of the results of periodic proctosigmoidoscopy has been done at the University of Minnesota Cancer Detection Center. Participants in the program demonstrated a marked reduction in the incidence of lower bowel cancers: 85% of the statistically anticipated adenocarcinomas did not develop, and each of those that did appear was found while yet early and sharply localized to the bowel wall. The suggestion is made that periodic proctosigmoidoscopy of the high-risk group of patients could very nearly eliminate lower bowel cancer as a cause of death at a cost no greater than that required in the treatment of patients as currently seen with this disease.

Abstract: Cachectic patients infused with hypertonic amino acids and dextrose ("parenteral hyperalimentation") are subject to severe hypophosphatemia and recurrent fungal and bacterial septicemia. We observed a relation between the two. Severe hypophosphatemia, induced in a total of 18 mongrel dogs, resulted in a 50 per cent depression of chemotactic, phagocytic and bactericidal activity of their granulocytes. There was a concomitant reduction in leukocyte ATP content. The motility defect was corrected if cellular ATP was repleted by phosphate supplementation of animals in vivo or by incubation of leukocytes with adenosine and phosphate in vitro. Analogously, severe hypophosphatemia in a hyperalimented patient was associated with a 45 per cent impairment of chemotactic responsiveness and was reversed by similar in vivo and in vitro manipulations. Abstract: The effects of seasonal noise on regression estimates are considered as a type of errors-in-variables problem. The natures of asymptotic biases due to the presence of seasonal noise and to the nature of seasonal adjustment in regressions using adjusted and unadjusted data are explored. Methods for recognizing such biases and for attenuating their effects are suggested.
