Stability of aggression among adolescents over time: A south African study

Abstract: In a study spanning 5 years, data were collected on the aggressiveness of over 1,700 male and female subjects. Subjects who were the more aggressive grade 8 (standard 6) pupils at the beginning of the study were discovered to be the more aggressive grade 12 (standard 10) pupils. It is concluded that, whatever its causes, aggression can be viewed as a persistent trait that may be influenced by situational variables but reveals substantial consistency over time. The findings of studies by Huesmann and Eron in the United States as well as Olweus in Scandinavia were thus supported in this South African investigation.

The Language for Learning project: Developing language-sensitive subject-teaching in South African secondary schools

Abstract: The Language for Learning project is an initiative in the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal which aims to help secondary school subject teachers to take account of language and learning. It operates in schools with varied patterns of intake and in a range of secondary school subjects. Teachers involved conduct small-scale action research projects on aspects of the role of language in classroom practice or school policy which influence the teaching of their subject. The project takes as its starting-point the under-achievement of students who use languages other than English in home and community. It assumes that this has in large part to do with the restricted role of these languages in education, the quality of English language use in the pedagogy of subject teachers, and the learners' own lack of proficiency in academic English. Synthesis and Characterization of Six-Coordinate Cationic Technetium(V) And Rhenium(V) Complexes with N-(2-Oxidophenyl)Salicylideneiminate and Bidentate Aromatic Nitrogen-Donor Ligands

Abstract: Six-coordinate cationic complexes of rhenium(V) and technetium(V) with the tridentate N-(2-oxidophenyl)-salicylideneiminate (OPhsal2-) and the bidentate aromatic nitrogen-donor ligands 2,2′-dipyridine, 1,10-phenanthroline, 2,2′-dipyridylamine and bis(2-pyridyl)ketone (NN) have been prepared. Complexes of general formula [MO(OPhsal)(NN)]X (M = Re, Tc; X = Cl, PF6) were isolated by the reaction of ReOCl(OPhsal)(PPh3) and TcOCl(O Phsal) with the bidentate nitrogen-donor ligands. The reaction of TcOCl(O Phsal) with bis(2-pyridyl)ketone (dpk) in ethanol produced the complex [TcO(OPhsal)-(dpk.EtOH)]Cl, in which alcoholation of ethanol across the ketone double bond of dpk has occurred. Spectroscopic and analytical results obtained for all the isolated complexes suggest terdentate coordination of OPhsal2- in the equatorial plane cis to the oxo oxygen, with the bidentate pyridyl nitrogen-donor ligands bridging the fourth equatorial site and the position trans to the oxo group.

The portability of American job involvement and job satisfaction scales to non-English speaking South Africans

Abstract: The scales discussed in Boshoff and Hoole (above) were applied to a sample of non-English mother tongue speakers in South Africa to test their ""portability"" between America and South Africa Where more than one possible structure was obtained, they were compared by means of confirmatory factor analysis To reduce error variance and improve goodness of fit indices, items were aggregated by taking the mean of random item clusters, and the confirmatory factor analyses repeated The best fit solution for each of the scales was identified and discussed Indications are that both the Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire and the Kanungo Job Involvement Scale can be used with confidence in South Africa, even on respondents who are not home language English speakers
