TL;DR: Three- and two-flux models for solving the scattering transfer equation in terms of Lorenz-Mie parameters are derived from the general formulas and the connection with classical literature is pointed out.
Abstract: In a previous paper, four-flux models for solving the scattering transfer equation in terms of Lorenz-Mie parameters were designed for Lorenz-Mie scatter centers embedded in a slab. Formulas for the various transmittances and reflectances were established. The special cases of transparent and nonscattering particles require special treatments which are described in the present work and lead to simpler formulas. The special case of completely opaque atmospheres is also considered. Three- and two-flux models are derived from the general formulas. The connection with classical literature is pointed out.

TL;DR: In this article, the salinity dependence of xanthan conformation is analyzed on the basis of Yamakawa's theory for a wormlike chain model with a total persistence length comprising a structural part, which is found to assume different values depending on the nature of the secondary structure (ordered or not), and an electrostatic part which is dependent on the ionic strength.

TL;DR: The most suitable solution remains the use of bioresorbable plastic systems due to their combining various potential advantages: — better bone remodeling because of better matching of mechanical properties with respect to bone, — no need for reoperation to remove the appliance after bone-healing, and — possibility for incorporating antibiotics through sustained delivery of the entrapped drug.
Abstract: Metals have been used extensively for internal fixation of bone fractures. However, shortcomings of metallic plating or nailing are now well identified and the interest for internal fixation devices made of more flexible materials is growing fast. In this respect, plastic-based systems appear attractive, particularly carbon fiber reinforced composites. However, the most suitable solution remains the use of bioresorbable plastic systems due to their combining various potential advantages: — better bone remodeling because of better matching of mechanical properties with respect to bone, — no need for reoperation to remove the appliance after bone-healing, and — possibility for incorporating antibiotics in view of preventing infection through sustained delivery of the entrapped drug.

TL;DR: A new method of laser-saturated fluorescence shot-to-shot concentration measurement is proposed, based on use of the wing effect of a nonuniform laser irradiance, which is independent of both the collisional transfer rate and variation in laser power.
Abstract: A new method of laser-saturated fluorescence shot-to-shot concentration measurement is proposed. The method is based on use of the wing effect of a nonuniform laser irradiance. The measurement is independent of both the collisional transfer rate and variation in laser power. If the laser power is known it is also a method of measurement of the collisional transfer rate at any pressure.

TL;DR: From the results, the hypothesis is put forward that the mean size of the soot particles depends mainly on their residence time.
Abstract: The mean size and number density of soot particles formed in a CH4-O2 premixed flat flame are measured by diffusion broadening spectroscopy for two equivalence ratios and three cold gas velocities. The influences of the time transit and the Cunningham coefficient C(Kn) are pointed out. By comparing dynamic with static light scattering, it is shown that C(Kn) has to be used. From the results, the hypothesis is put forward that the mean size of the soot particles depends mainly on their residence time.

TL;DR: In particular, this article showed that for all the sequences (A1,...,Ap) and (B1,,...,Bq) in a set, there exists a finitely additive measure θ on A such thatm≦θ≦m(A_i ) \leqq } \sum\limits_{i = 1} √ q {M(B_i)} is satisfied.
Abstract: LetX be a set,A an algebra of subsets ofX, m andM two mappings fromA to\(\bar {\mathbb{R}_(+)}\). Then there exists a finitely additive measure θ onA such thatm≦θ≦M if and only if for all the sequences (A1, ...,Ap) and (B1, ...,Bq) inA such that\(\sum\limits_{i = 1}^p {1_{A_i } \leqq } \sum\limits_{i = 1}^q {1_{Bi} }\) the inequality\(\sum\limits_{i = 1}^p {m(A_i ) \leqq } \sum\limits_{i = 1}^q {M(B_i )}\) is satisfied. This simple condition permits us to deduce and generalize many previous results relating to the “marginal problem”.

TL;DR: The projections of GRF neurons in extra-infundibular regions suggest that GRF can also act as a neuromodulator or neurotransmitter in the hypothalamus.
Abstract: The distribution of growth hormone-releasing factor (GRF)-like immunoreactivity in the human hypothalamus was studied by light-microscopic immunocytochemistry. With antibodies that we developed against synthetic human pancreatic GRF (hpGRF), we localized GRF immunoreactivity in neuronal cell bodies that were observed only in the infundibular (arcuate) nucleus. Immunostained nerve fibers were found in large numbers in the neurovascular zone of the median eminence, in the proximal portion of the pituitary stalk and in periventricular areas. These localizations are in agreement with those of studies recently performed in other species and strongly suggest that GRF can be released into the capillaries of the pituitary portal plexus to reach the anterior pituitary gland. The projections of GRF neurons in extra-infundibular regions suggest that GRF can also act as a neuromodulator or neurotransmitter in the hypothalamus.

TL;DR: A common origin of the blood supply to a dural arteriovenous malformation and to the spinal cord from the same segmental artery is very rare, and demonstrating the location of the normal spinal blood supply system is mandatory to avoid postoperative complications.
Abstract: A common origin of the blood supply to a dural arteriovenous malformation and to the spinal cord from the same segmental artery is very rare. This obviously contraindicates embolization of the fistula. Demonstrating the location of the normal spinal blood supply system is therefore mandatory to avoid postoperative complications. The visualization of the normal blood vessels can be masked by a steal phenomenon, but it must at all costs be obtained. The authors describe one such case.

TL;DR: In this article, a nonblocked zero-frequency filtering technique was used to improve the in-line holographic recording of small objects at extended distances from the hologram, and the irradiance distributions in three planes (i.e., in projected images, diffraction patterns, and reconstructed images) were calculated.
Abstract: A nonblocked zero-frequency filtering technique is used to improve the in-line holographic recording of small objects at extended distances from the hologram. Since the filter is coated on the relay lens, the irradiance distributions in three planes (i.e., in projected images, diffraction patterns, and reconstructed images) are calculated. Influences of filter diameter, filter transmittance, and exposure level of holograms are considered in discussing fringe visibility, image forms, and image contrast.
