TL;DR: In this paper, the effects of crowding were examined in a prison system, focusing on three factors: social density (number of individuals in sleeping quarters), spatial density (space per person), and overall institutional population level.
Abstract: The effects of crowding were examined in a prison system. Emphasis was directed toward three factors—social density (number of individuals in sleeping quarters), spatial density (space per person), and overall institutional population level. Archival data indicated that in prisons higher population years yielded higher death rates and higher rates of psychiatric commitments. Blood pressure measures were analyzed for inmates living in three types of housing that differed in degree of spatial and social density. Blood pressure was higher in more crowded housing. The degree of perceived crowding was more strongly related to space per person than number of occupants per housing unit.

TL;DR: The Polochic fault is seen on LANDSAT imagery to continue its westward path from northwestern Guatemala across the Chiapas massif to the Pacific coastal plain this article.
Abstract: Polochic fault is seen on LANDSAT imagery to continue its westward path from northwestern Guatemala across the Chiapas massif to the Pacific coastal plain. The fault has had 132 ± 5 km of left-lateral displacement that is recorded in the offset of Cenozoic fold and thrust belt structure and stratigraphy. The trace of the Polochic fault has been folded into what approximates a sinusoidal curve of about 130-km wave length and 7-km amplitude by an essentially east-west compressive stress. The curious similarity in displacement and fold wavelength results in a premovement reconstruction that reveals not only a match across the fault in geology, but an almost perfect fit of one block against the others. Some segments of the fault across which recorded slip took place are probably locked and not active. Strain has shifted to other shears in western Guatemala and Chiapas and to the Motagua fault. Parts of the Polochic and the newer shears may be alternating with the Motagua as the Caribbean-North American plate boundary. With the 132 km of slip removed, segments of the now fragmented Cenozoic fold belt can be brought into coincidence in a clear-cut arcuate trend that is convex southwest. The major fault displacement is believed to have occurred within the interval from middle Miocene to middle Pliocene time. Eastern Guatemala has undergone a counterclockwise rotation of about 25° that reoriented the fault trace and all other structural fabric from due east to the present east-northeast azimuth.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors proved Peano's Theorem in the weak topology for differential equations in a reflexive Banach space and proved the existence and uniqueness of extremal solutions.
Abstract: THE STUDY of the Cauchy problem for differential equations in a Banach space relative to the strong topology has attracted much attention in recent years [l&4]. This study has taken two different directions. One direction is to impose compactness type conditions that guarantee only existence and the corresponding results are extensions of the classical Peano’s Theorem. The other approach is to utilize dissipative type conditions that assure existence and uniqueness of solutions, and the corresponding results are extensions of the classical Picard’s Theorem. However a similar study ofthe Cauchy problem in a Banach space relative to the weak topology has lagged behind. Recently Szep [4] proved Peano’s Theorem in the weak topology for differential equations in a reflexive Banach space. His main tools are the Eberlein-Smulian Theorem and the fact that a subset of a reflexive Banach space is weakly compact if and only if it is weakly closed and norm bounded. In this paper we wish to prove this theorem in arbitrary Banach spaces. Our first approach is to impose weak compactness type conditions in terms of the measure of weak noncompactness developed by De Blasi. We also impose weak dissipative type conditions and prove an existence and uniqueness theorem. Using these existence results and the partial orderings induced by cones, existence of extremal solutions and comparison results relative to the weak topology are also proved.

Abstract: The theoretical foundation of communication apprehension is a trait conceptualization of speech anxiety Although stability is implicit in the general notion of traits, the stability of communication apprehension measures has not been well documented This study was conducted to determine whether or not an impending classroom performance affects PRCA scores The results indicate that subjects anticipating a speech performance report higher communication apprehension than those anticipating a lecture Moreover, the results indicate the possibility of disarray of PRCA scores following anticipated speech performance

TL;DR: This article found strong empirical evidence suggesting that economic socialization progressively orients children to a favorable view of capitalism and structured social inequality and reported the results of such a study, concluding that children acquire ideas about capitalism from their parents.
Abstract: The literature in social psychology is remarkably free of socialization research exploring how children acquire ideas about capitalism. In this paper, we report the results of such a study. Generally, we find strong empirical evidence suggesting that economic socialization progressively orients children to a favorable view of capitalism and structured social inequality.

TL;DR: In this paper, the second derivative of a Lyapunov-like function relative to a compact operator is assumed to be an arbitrary Banach space, and a measure of noncompactness is defined in terms of the Kuratowski measure.
Abstract: where x E X is a real Banach space. In case X = R”, existence was proved by first obtaining a priori bounds for (1 x(t) (I, I( x’(t) (( o a solution of (1.1) and (1.2) and then employing a theorem of f Scorza-Dragoni [l-3]. The methods involve assuming inequalities in terms of the second derivative of Lyapunov-like functions relative to H, using comparison theorems for scalar second order equations and utilizing Leray Schauder’s alternative or equivalently the modified function approach [ 1,2,4-73. In this paper, we wish to extend this fruitful method to the case when X is an arbitrary Banach space. First of all, this necessitates extending the basic result of Scorza-Dragoni. If we assume that H is compact operator as in [S], this extension is relatively easy. Since interest in abstract BVP’s is partly due to the possibility of applications to partial differential equations, assuming compactness of H excludes many interesting examples. For example, using the method of lines (see the survey paper [9]), nonlinear elliptic BVP’s may be approximated by an infinite system of BVP of the type (1.1) and (1.2). Consequently, we impose compactness-like conditions on H in terms of the Kuratowski’s measure of noncompactness in extending Scorza-Dragoni’s theorem. Thus, in Section 1, we develop further properties of the measure of noncompactness that are needed in our work. Utilizing these properties and the fixed point theorem of Darbo [lo], we

Abstract: Monotone iterative methods have been successfully used to generate improvable two-sided point-wise bounds on solutions of nonlinear boundary value problems for both ordinary and partial differential equations. While such procedures take a simple form when the nonlinearities are independent of gradient terms [6, 9], the extension of such techniques to fully nonlinear problems has been quite formidable. In the case of scalar ordinary differential equations of the type

TL;DR: In this paper, the annihilation rate of positrons which form orthopositronium in methane gas varies linearly with gas density at low densities, but significantly deviates from linearity at high densities.
Abstract: Recent experiments have shown that the annihilation rate of positrons which form orthopositronium in methane gas varies linearly with gas density at low densities, but significantly deviates from linearity at high densities. We present evidence that this annihilation behavior in methane results from density fluctuations that are characteristic of an imperfect gas.

Abstract: A method is presented for determining the transient surface temperature of a solid when the temperature response as a function of time at an interior point within the solid is known. The method employs approximate iterative techniques suitable for the solution of one-dimensional transient thermal conduction problems in homogeneous or composite solids with constant thermal properties. An example problem is solved using a linear technique and a least-squares approach. This iteration technique exhibits a high degree of accuracy, rapid convergence, and excellent stability. In addition, an analytical expression is developed that predicts the computed surface noise resulting from fluctuations in the input data.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors measured the shoulder width of positrons in N/sub 2/ and N/ sub 2/ gas at 77 K at densities in the range 1.9-3.6 amagat and with Ne concentrations in range 0.34-0.98 amagats, respectively.
Abstract: Annihilation lifetime spectra have been measured for positrons in N/sub 2/ gas at 77 K at densities in the range 1.9--3.6 amagat, and in N/sub 2/-Ne gas mixtures at 77 K having N/sub 2/ partial densities in the range 0.5--3.7 amagat and with Ne concentrations in the range 0.34--0.98. The annihilation rate of positrons with N/sub 2/ was found to be independent of the Ne concentration in the gas mixtures. (Z/sub eff/)/sub N/2 remains constant at 40.0 +- 0.9 at N/sub 2/ densities below about 2.3 amagat, but increases to about 108 at 3.7 amagat. Shoulder regions in the lifetime spectra of positrons in N/sub 2/ and in N/sub 2/-Ne mixtures have been observed which have a constant width of about 14 nsec amagat at N/sub 2/ densities below about 2 amagat, but which increase to about 24 nsec amagat at 3.7 amagat of N/sub 2/. For N/sub 2/ densities in the range 2--3.7 amagat, the measured shoulder widths correspond to a constant time of about 7 nsec. The slow-positron annihilation rates and the shoulder widths are discussed in terms of the self-trapping of positrons within clusters of N/sub 2/ molecules.

Abstract: a trip &dquo;downtown&dquo; to the stadium. Prior to 1960, none of the 28 teams in the baseball major leagues (major leagues) or the National Football League (NFL) played their regular season home games outside of a central city. Increasingly this has changed; some fans now travel away from the central city to see a sports event. In 1977, 10 teams, or 19%, of the 53 professional baseball and football teams played their regular season home games in suburban cities. Included in this group are 8 teams that moved from a central city to a suburban community.

Abstract: A novel technology for analog, real time, signal processing at GHz frequencies is described utilizing the interaction of slow magnetostatic waves in magnetically biased films of yttrium iron garnet, grown by liquid phase epitaxy on substrates of gadolinium gallium garnet, with periodic structures. The dispersion, attentuation and tunability characteristics of these waves are reviewed together with methods for efficient microstrip transduction, controlled spatial tapping and realizing matched terminations. Comparisons are drawn with surface acoustic wave technology in the context of available parameters and performing nonrecursive transversal filtering. Basic experiments and theoretical results for periodic structures, comprised of metal overlay arrays, both at normal and oblique incidence are described. The paper concludes with a survey of magnetostatic devices for GHz signal processing applications including bandpass filters, resonator-filters, delay lines, oscillators and pulse compression filters.

TL;DR: It was concluded that the induction mechanism responsible for the McCollough effect is sensitive to line orientation but not to shape, and appears incompatible with a simple conditioning model.
Abstract: The effect of line orientation and line configuration on the induction of orientation-specific negatively colored aftereffects was investigated in three separate studies. In the first study, subjects viewed magenta-and-black vertical gratings with one eye, alternating with green-and-black vertical gratings to the other. Monocular tests revealed complementary aftereffects in each eye which disappeared when the test patterns were viewed with both eyes together. In Study 2, imposing a single colored bar against a black background induced negatively colored aftereffects in a white bar against a black background and in a black-and-white grating, while imposing a single black bar against a colored background was ineffective. In Study 3, presenting a magenta square outline elicited green aftereffects in vertical and horizontal bars and gratings as well as in outlines of squares and diamonds, while pairing the magenta square with a green cross had no effect. It was concluded that the induction mechanism responsible for the McCollough effect is sensitive to line orientation but not to shape. This specificity appears incompatible with a simple conditioning model.

Abstract: A study is made of 69 residential slabs located in an area of expansive clay. The slabs, all built in conformance to FHA specifications, had been in existence for several years. The slabs had experienced significant differential vertical movements. Differential vertical movements are shown to correlate with differences in moisture contents from the center to the corners of the slabs. Trees planted near the houses are shown to have major influences upon slab behavior. The tree root systems absorbed moisture from the soil causing subsequent drying under the slab edges.

Abstract: At the outset it is essential that the use to which several important and recurring terms will be put be made explicit. The first of these is “interpreter”. Probably the most common understanding of this term is as a somewhat shortened version of the phrase “conference interpreter”. Seleskovitch (1976: 97) places the number of conference interpreters in the Western world at a maximum of a few thousand, of whom something over one thousand are members of the International Association of Conference Interpreters AIIC.

TL;DR: It is found that residues from fir are more difficult to identify than those from pine, because the heat intensity of burning fir volatilizes more accelerant than is characteristic of burning pine, for example.
Abstract: Since the early 1960s, gas chromatography has been used as a means of determining the presence of hydrocarbons in fire residues. Early investigators relied on packed columns and thermal conductivity detectors. Their results proved that the hydrocarbons could be detected in fire residue [1]. Later work [2] explored the recovery of many different accelerants from various types of fire residues. The method of Ettling's experiments [2] is questionable, and the equipment lacked the resolving power of capillary columns of the support-coated open-tubular type. The burning conditions and time element were not related to typical arson field investigation conditions. In the conclusions of the 1968 study [2], residues were analyzed by comparing a residue chromatogram to a chromatogram of a blank. The blank was a fire residue from materials not ignited by any accelerant. The chromatographic peaks that appeared on the sample chromatogram but not in the blank were attributed to the accelerant. Accelerants were not detected in several residues that had burned for more than 2 min. This conclusion is not fully supported by the present results. We find that residues from fir are more difficult to identify than those from pine. The heat intensity of burning fir volatilizes more accelerant than is characteristic of burning pine, for example. The present study was designed to expand on previous work, to build a file of representative chromatographs, to explore techniques in hydrocarbon determination, and to develop a rapid means of identifying accelerants in fire residues.

TL;DR: In this article, a solar still greenhouse system was investigated for treatment of sewage, recovery of high quality distillate, and to utilize the nutrients contained in sewage for plant culture.
Abstract: A solar‐still‐greenhouse system was investigated for treatment of sewage, recovery of high quality distillate, and to utilize the nutrients contained in sewage for plant culture. Two small solar‐still‐greenhouses were constructed and operated. The temperature variation in the solar stills and greenhouses, distillate condensation rate and its quality and plant viability in both units were investigated. The results indicate that solar radiation deodorizes sewage and reduces its BOD in the still. Condensates were free of coliform organisms, contained ammonia nitrogen and BOD in small concentrations.

TL;DR: The Walsh-Hadamard transform or (WHT) cs is useful in mapping an even or odd sequence since, in this case, at least one-half of the transform components will be zero.
Abstract: Walsh-Hadamard matrices are rearranged such that the first half of the rows represents cal functions in increasing order of sequency whereas the second half represents sal functions in decreasing order of sequency. The transform based on this rearrangement is called the Cal-Sal Walsh-Hadamard transform or (WHT) cs . General expressions for developing the elements of these matrices are developed. These matrices are decomposed into sparse matrix factors which lead directly to the fast algorithms similar to those for other forms of the WHT. The (WHT) cs is useful in mapping an even or odd sequence since, in this case, at least one-half of the transform components will be zero.
