15 Jan 2018TL;DR: This paper investigates the performance of confidence intervals for signal to noise ratio (SNR) of two-parameter exponential distribution using generalized confidence interval approach, large sample approach, and method of variance estimates recovery (MOVER).
Abstract: This paper investigates the performance of confidence intervals for signal to noise ratio (SNR) of two-parameter exponential distribution. The confidence intervals were constructed using generalized confidence interval (GCI) approach, large sample (LS) approach, and method of variance estimates recovery (MOVER) approach. The coverage probability and average length of the confidence intervals were evaluated by a Monte Carlo simulation. The results found that the confidence intervals based on the GCI approach provide the best coverage probabilities for all cases. The approaches are illustrated using an example.

TL;DR: In this paper, Amornsawadwatana et al. evaluated the logistics cost structure in a construction project and established a systematic approach to evaluate the logistics costs in construction project.
Abstract: A building construction project is a kind of fixed position layout. Materials, equipments, resources must be moved to the working area to perform a particular activity. For example, materials, welding machine, steel sheet, and workers must be transported to the area where a steel door installation is performed. In performing this task, logistics costs can be estimated from loading, handling, and unloading activities. Moreover, a cost incurred from material handling equipment used in handling materials or machines must be included in the logistics costs. At a particular construction project, hundreds of activities are performed to construct buildings. Hence, several materials are required. Examples of these materials are prefabrication concrete, ready mixed concrete, steels, bricks, plastic tubes, paint, etc. Consequently, loading, transporting, unloading activities are performed frequently and contribute significant cost to the construction project. Moreover, materials can be damaged during loading, transportation, and unloading activities (Amornsawadwatana, 2004). These damages also generate loss to the project. Materials are ordered and delivered from suppliers. Generally, materials are delivered in a large volume and require some space for stock. Hence, ordering and inventory costs are incurred in the project. Objectives of this research are (i) to determine logistics cost structure in a construction project and (ii) to establish a systematic approach to evaluate the logistics cost in construction project. In this research, the proposed methodology is implemented in the actual building construction case study.

16 Jun 2013TL;DR: This paper proposes a novel on-the-fly provenance tracking mechanism that enables provenance queries to be performed dynamically without requiring provenance assertions to be stored persistently and offers low-latency processing with reasonable memory consumption.
Abstract: Applications that operate over streaming data with high-volume and real-time processing requirements are becoming increasingly important. These applications process streaming data in real-time and deliver instantaneous responses to support precise and on-time decisions. In such systems, traceability - the ability to verify and investigate the source of a particular output - in real-time is extremely important. This ability allows raw streaming data to be checked and processing steps to be verified and validated in timely manner. Therefore, it is crucial that stream systems have a mechanism for dynamically tracking provenance - the process that produced result data - at execution time, which we refer to as on-the-fly stream provenance tracking. In this paper, we propose a novel on-the-fly provenance tracking mechanism that enables provenance queries to be performed dynamically without requiring provenance assertions to be stored persistently. We demonstrate how our provenance mechanism works by means of an on-the-fly provenance tracking algorithm. The experimental evaluation shows that our provenance solution does not have a significant effect on the normal processing of stream systems given a 7% overhead. Moreover, our provenance solution offers low-latency processing (0.3 ms per additional component) with reasonable memory consumption.

10 Jul 2010TL;DR: The impacts of information sharing mechanisms on retail supply chain performance were investigated to find the mechanisms that led to the long-run average total cost minimization.
Abstract: In this study, we (attempted to) demonstrate the benefit of information sharing on supply chain performance in a three echelon supply chain that consists of one distribution center and two store retailers. To perform the analysis, the discrete event simulation model for inventory replenishment process was developed based on the actual data obtained from the retailer. Various replenishment information sharing mechanisms were analyzed for promotional and non-promotional merchandises in each store. In addition, we also analyzed the benefit of inter-store information sharing and inter-store transshipment on supply chain performance. The impacts of information sharing mechanisms on retail supply chain performance were investigated to find the mechanisms that led to the long-run average total cost minimization.

TL;DR: An Adaptive Large Neighborhood Search (ALNS) framework to solve the Multiple-Day Music Rehearsal Problem (MMRP), where music pieces with different player sets and durations are arranged in a predefined number of rehearsal days so that the total days of attendance and waiting times experienced by all players are minimized.
