TL;DR: In this article, it was proved that for any value s between the maximal and minimal values, there exists an element in M { nk } k ≥ 1, { ck }k ≥ 1) such that its Hausdorff dimension is equal to s. The same result holds for packing dimension.
Abstract: Let M ({ nk } k ≥1,{ ck }k≥1) be the collection of homogeneous Moran sets determined by { n k}k≥1and { ck }k≥1, where { nk }k≥1 is a sequence of positive integers and { ck }k≥1 a sequence of positive numbers. Then the maximal and minimal values of Hausdorff dimensions for elements in M are determined. The result is proved that for any value s between the maximal and minimal values, there exists an element in M { nk } k ≥1, { ck } k ≥1) such that its Hausdorff dimension is equal to s. The same results hold for packing dimension. In the meantime, some other properties of homogeneous Moran sets are discussed.

TL;DR: In this paper, the electronic and structural properties for TiNi, TiPd, and TiPt were studied using first-principles total energy calculations, and the structural parameters for a few structural phases were found from energy and force calculations.
Abstract: The electronic and structural properties for TiNi, TiPd, and TiPt are studied using first-principles total energy calculations. For each alloy, the structural parameters for a few structural phases are found from energy and force calculations. In each case, we found that the ground state martensitic phase ${(B19/B19}^{\ensuremath{'}})$ is indeed lower in energy than the high temperature $B2$ phase. In all three alloys, the lowering in energy of the ${B19/B19}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ structure is associated with the electronic properties such as lowering of the density of states at the Fermi level at the Ti site, and the broadening of the transition-metal $d$ bands in the ${B19/B19}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ phase compared with the $B2$ phase.

TL;DR: In this article, a new approach for calculating generalized stacking-fault energies, which allows for in-plane relaxation of atoms, is presented. But it is only applied to the slip plane in hcp materials.
Abstract: We present a new approach for calculating generalized stacking-fault energies, which allows for in-plane relaxation of atoms. When applied to the {112} slip plane in hcp materials, our approach predicts that a stable stacking fault occurs, associated with a slip of 1/6 (11 ) [tbnd] ½ (c + a). This is consistent with the edge dislocation with b = (c + a) breaking into two partial dislocations, each with b = 1/2 (c + a), observed in previous simulations of the dislocation cores. The resulting generalized stacking-fault energy profile may be useful in understanding the competition between {112} (11 ) twinning (observed in Zr and Ti) and the related slip mode, observed in Mg, Co and Zn.

Abstract: We shall consider weak solutions of (1.1) i.e. solutions belonging to the space M 1(Ω) = { u ∈ L2(Ω,RN ) : Xi u ∈ L2(Ω,RN ), i = 1, . . . ,m } . A particular case of our main result will be the following Theorem 1.1. Assume that the data aij and f α are C∞ functions o f their arguments and that f α satisfies (1.2). Then every weak solution u ∈ M 1(Ω) of (1.1) which is continuous in Ω is C∞ in Ω.

TL;DR: In this paper, the elastic properties of one-dimensional quasicrystal (1D) point groups were investigated. And the elastic behavior of these point groups was discussed according to the generalized elasticity theory of QCs.
Abstract: A one-dimensional (1D) quasicrystal (QC) is defined as a three-dimensional body which is periodic in the x - y plane and quasiperiodic in the third dimension. Knowing that the possible symmetry operations for a 1D QC are 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, m, (inversion), (horizontal twofold rotation) and (horizontal mirror reflection), 31 possible point groups of 1D QCs have been deduced. These 31 point groups are divided into ten Laue classes and six systems. Considering screw (only ) and glide (only a, b and ) operations, 80 possible space groups of 1D QCs have also been obtained. According to our generalized elasticity theory of QCs, the elastic behaviours, including independent elastic constants and invariants, for each Laue class of 1D QCs have been discussed.

TL;DR: In this article, a polycrystalline transition layer was obtained from Si(111) by rf plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition using a combination of X-ray diffraction and transmission electron diffraction.
Abstract: ${\mathrm{C}}_{3}{\mathrm{N}}_{4}$ films were prepared on Si(111) by rf plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition using ${\mathrm{Si}}_{3}{\mathrm{N}}_{4}/\mathrm{T}\mathrm{i}\mathrm{N}$ and ${\mathrm{Si}}_{3}{\mathrm{N}}_{4}/\mathrm{Z}\mathrm{r}\mathrm{N}$ as transition layers. X-ray diffraction and transmission electron diffraction revealed that the films deposited have a polycrystalline structure. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy confirmed the presence of ${\mathrm{sp}}^{3}$ and ${\mathrm{sp}}^{2}$ hybridized C atoms tetrahedrally and hexagonally bonded with N atoms, respectively. The nitrogen concentration was calculated from the XPS spectra. Graphite-free ${\mathrm{C}}_{3}{\mathrm{N}}_{4}$ films were obtained under optimal conditions. The Vickers hardness of the ${\mathrm{C}}_{3}{\mathrm{N}}_{4}$ films falls in the range of 2950--5100 ${\mathrm{k}\mathrm{g}\mathrm{f}/\mathrm{m}\mathrm{m}}^{2}.$ The ${\mathrm{C}}_{3}{\mathrm{N}}_{4}$ films exhibit high resistance against acid and electrochemical etching. Thermal gravimetric and differential thermal analysis showed that the films are thermally stable at temperatures ranging from room temperature to 1200 \ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}C.

TL;DR: A bacterial artificial chromosome library of IR64 genomic DNA was constructed to facilitate construction of physical map of the rice genome and may be used as landmarks for physical mapping of chromosome 4, and as starting points for chromosome walking towards the map-based cloning of disease resistance genes which were located nearby.
Abstract: To facilitate construction of physical map of the rice genome, a bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC) library of IR64 genomic DNA was constructed. It consists of 18 432 clones and contains 3.28 rice genomic equivalents. The insert size ranged from 37 to 364 kb with an average of 107 kb. We used 31 RFLP markers on chromosome 4 to screen the library by colony hybridization. Sixty eight positive clones were identified with 2.2 positive clones per RFLP marker. The positive clones were analyzed to generate 29 contigs whose sizes ranged from 50 to 384 kb with an average of 145.6 kb. Chromosome walking was initiated for ten contigs linked to resistance genes. Thirty eight BAC clones were obtained and two contigs were integrated. Altogether, they covered 5.65 Mb (15.1%) of chromosome 4. These contigs may be used as landmarks for physical mapping of chromosome 4, and as starting points for chromosome walking towards the map-based cloning of disease resistance genes which were located nearby.

TL;DR: In this article, a system for coupling amperometric detection with capillary electrophoresis (CE) is demonstrated, in which an etched joint is used to isolate the detector from the high applied voltage when the capillary inner diameter is larger than 25 μm.
Abstract: A system for coupling amperometric detection with capillary electrophoresis (CE) is demonstrated. In CE amperometric detection, the separation and detection capillaries are usually coupled with a porous joint to isolate the detector from the high applied voltage when the capillary inner diameter is larger than 25 μm. In this report a simple method is suggested. The joint was prepared by etching the capillary wall with HF after the polyimide coating of the capillary had been removed. This etched joint can efficiently isolate the detector from the high applied voltage. The performance of the CE-amperometric detection with an etched joint was evaluated with hydroquinone. The successful separation and amperometric detection of catecholic compounds, diphenols, and phenol have been carried out by this system.

TL;DR: The isolation of male and female gametes is a precondition for the micromanipulation of flowering plant gamete condition at fertilization, and sperm cells are isolated from pollen tubes grown on cut styles using the “in vivo/in vitro” technique.
Abstract: The isolation of male and female gametes is a precondition for the micromanipulation of flowering plant gametes. To reflect their condition at fertilization, isolated gametes need to be physiologically mature and vigorous. Sperm cells are isolated from pollen tubes grown on cut styles using the “in vivo/in vitro” technique. Embryo sacs are isolated 2 days after anthesis using brief treatments of minimal concentrations of cell-wall-digesting enzymes on ovules of emasculated flowers. Egg cells are then mechanically separated from the embryo sac, allowing unambiguous identification of cells. Two days is usually the minimum required for the pollen tube to penetrate the ovule and effect fertilization in vivo.

TL;DR: In this article, the formation energy of a free-volume hole has been calculated in terms of fractional free volume derived from positron annihilation parameters, implying a free volume transport mechanism.
Abstract: Positron annihilation lifetime and conductivity measurements have been performed for the poly(ether urethane) PEU-${\mathrm{LiClO}}_{4}$ complex as a function of temperature in the temperature range from 120 to 360 K and from 280 to 360 K, respectively. According to the variations of free volume and fractional free volume, the structural transition of PEU-${\mathrm{LiClO}}_{4}$ has been determined. Based on a polymer lattice model, the formation energy of a free-volume hole has been calculated in terms of fractional free volume derived from positron annihilation parameters. The temperature dependence of ionic conductivity obeys the Vogel-Tammann-Fulcher and Williams-Landel-Ferry equations, implying a free-volume transport mechanism. A direct relationship between the ionic conductivity and the fractional free volume has been established based on the experimental measurements. A linear least-squares procedure was used to evaluate the apparent activation energy in the Vogel-Tammann-Fulcher equation and several important parameters in the Williams-Landel-Ferry and Vogel-Tammann-Fulcher equations. The correlation between the segmental motion and the conductivity could be explained by means of the free-volume theory.

TL;DR: In this article, water-resistant polyurethane (PU)/nitrocellulose coating was obtained from regenerated cellulose films, which were prepared by coagulating cellulose cuoxam solution.
Abstract: Water-resistant films were obtained from polyurethane (PU)/nitrocellulose coating to regenerated cellulose films, which were prepared by coagulating cellulose cuoxam solution. The PU/nitrocellulose coating layer was cured at 80 °C for 2 min and formed semi-interpenetrating polymer networks (semi-IPNs) structure. The tensile strength (σb), water resistivity (R), water vapor permeability (P), and light transmittance of the coated films changed with nitrocellulose content in the coating, and the best values (such as σb, 679 kg·cm-2; R, 53%; P, 0.004 g·cm-2·day-1) were attained at 33 wt % nitrocellulose. The TEM, EPMA, DTA, IR, and UV results showed that the coated films have strong interfacial bonding, which is caused by covalent and hydrogen bonds between the cellulose film and the semi-IPNs coating. The biodegradation half-life t1/2 of the coated films in soil at 20−30 °C was given to be 58 days, and after about 6 months the coated films were almost completely decomposed by microorganisms.
