TL;DR: Nine 4-nitrophenoxycarbonyloxy-substituted compound recorded a remarkable 94% diastereomer excess with 91% conversion to the closed form upon UV irradiation.
Abstract: Nine 1-[2-(1-substituted)ethyl-3-benzothienyl]-2-(2-methyl-3-benzothienyl)hexafluorocyclopentenes (4-substituted benzoyloxy, N-arylcarbamoyloxy, and aryloxycarbonyloxy) were synthesized. They showed diastereoselective photochromic ring closure upon UV irradiation. Among them, 4-nitrophenoxycarbonyloxy-substituted compound recorded a remarkable 94% diastereomer excess with 91% conversion to the closed form.

TL;DR: In this article, concentrated iron solution generated by electrocoagulation (EC) process was used for the removal of nutrients from human urine (yellow water), which was prepared synthetically with major components: nitrogen and phosphorus.
Abstract: In this study, concentrated iron solution generated by electrocoagulation (EC) process was used for the removal of nutrients from human urine (yellow water). Yellow water was prepared synthetically with major components: nitrogen and phosphorus. As a result of the pH adjustment, nitrogen and phosphorus, which are present in urine, react with electrochemically generated iron solution and then accumulate in the sludge by precipitation. All experiments were done under different pH values for the evaluation of this novel EC nutrient removal process. The effect of the EC treatment on the removal of nutrients was followed by total nitrogen and phosphate measurements and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The effects of treatment parameters (pH, iron/phosphate, iron/nitrogen, and iron/nutrient ratios) on the performance of the EC treatment were also examined for the evaluation of applicability of this novel EC method for the treatment of yellow waters. The results show that the pH increase i...

TL;DR: There was a significant increase in GPx activities of smoking mothers and their infants, suggesting that they may have been exposed to more oxidant stress.
Abstract: This cohort study investigated postnatal serum malondialdehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) levels in 14 active-smoking, 14 passive-smoking, and 15 non-smoking mothers and their newborns on day 7 post-partum. No significant differences were noted among the study groups with respect to MDA (p = 0.63) or SOD levels (p = 0.98) in either the mothers or their infants. However, there were significant differences among the study groups with respect to serum GPx activities in both the mothers (p = 0.028) and the infants (p = 0.039). When GPx activities were analyzed separately in both mothers and infants, a significant difference was noted only between the infants of smoking mothers and the infants of non-smoking mothers (p = 0.015). In conclusion, there was a significant increase in GPx activities of smoking mothers and their infants, suggesting that they may have been exposed to more oxidant stress.

TL;DR: Trauma enhances ACB levels, which may affect the diagnostic performance of the ACB assay, and this effect can limit the ability of the assay for detection of myocardial ischaemia in patients exposed to trauma.
Abstract: Background: In the emergency department (ED), the diagnosis of acute myocardial ischaemia is very difficult because of the absence of a rapid, reliable diagnostic test. The albumin cobalt binding (ACB) assay is a good candidate as a marker for for detection of myocardial ischaemia, as it is an easy and rapid test. To date, however, the way in which alterations in metal binding sites of human serum albumin depend on ischaemic events has not been reported in detail. Methods: We studied 92 patients admitted to the ED within 1 hour after exposure to trauma. Trauma patients divided into two groups according to their Injury Severity Score (ISS): group 1 comprised mildly injured patients who had ISS trauma score 15 (n = 32). The blood specimens of 30 healthy volunteers were studied as a control group. Results: Group 2 showed significantly increased ACB levels (0.63 (0.18) absorbance units (ABSU)) compared with group 1 (0.54 (0.14) ABSU) (p Conclusion: Consequently, trauma enhances ACB levels, which may affect the diagnostic performance of the ACB assay, and this effect can limit the ability of the assay for detection of myocardial ischaemia in patients exposed to trauma.

TL;DR: Resistance to amoxicillin does not appear to be an important problem in H pylori-infected ESRD and non-uremic patients in the authors' region, and in contrast, the rates of resistance to clarithromycin are high, particularly in the E SRD population.
