TL;DR: In this article, the initial stage of gold oxide layer formation on the gold electrode surface was investigated in 0.5 M H2SO4 and it was found that gold anodic polarization in the E range from ∼1.3 to 2.1 V causes an increase in intensity of the XPS spectra at an electron binding energy eb=85.9 eV for gold and at eb=530 eV to correspond to Au3+ and O2− oxidation states in hydrous or anhydrous gold oxide.
