TL;DR: This article explored the everyday particulars of life in academia for PhD candidates and ECRs under the tide of financial cuts and increased competition for funding, arguing that the push for ever increasing outputs attends most of our time and represents a distinctly different form of scholarship than has been traditionally considered as the pathway into academia, not seldom jeopardizing well-being of young academics, one that needs to be interrogated by geographers.
Abstract: Work intensification is a characteristic of the current neoliberal trend in academia. Postgraduates and Early Career Researchers (PhD candidates and ECRs) in geography are no strangers to this development but are rarely the focus of publications or dialogue on the (gendered) outcomes of the academy’s neoliberal agenda. Encouraged by the recent emotional turn in the social sciences and humanities, this article seeks to unveil some of the everyday particulars of life in academia for PhD candidates and ECRs under the tide of financial cuts and increased competition for funding. We explore the question: “Who can – and indeed wants to – play this game?” As three early and one mid-career academic women in four different institutions in the Global North, we make use of reflexivity, autobiographical writing, and reflection, to analyze increasingly stressful and demanding working conditions. Through the depiction of our lived experiences, we contend that the push for ever increasing outputs attends most of our time and represents a distinctly different form of scholarship than has been traditionally considered as the pathway into academia, not seldom jeopardizing well-being of young academics, one that needs to be interrogated by geographers.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors consider the broader purposes and values of disciplinary teaching in contributing to individual human development and explore approaches to developing the geography curriculum in ways that re-assert the educational value of geographical thinking for students.
Abstract: A geographical education offers more than skills, subject knowledge and generic attributes. It also develops a set of discipline-specific capabilities that contribute to a graduate’s future learning and experience, granting them special ways of thinking for lifelong development and for contributing to the welfare of themselves, their community and their world. This paper considers the broader purposes and values of disciplinary teaching in contributing to individual human development. Set in the context of recent debates concerning the role of the university and the neo-liberalisation of higher education this paper explores approaches to developing the geography curriculum in ways that re-assert the educational value of geographical thinking for students. Using international examples of teaching and learning practice in geography, we recognise five geocapabilities: use of the geographical imagination; ethical subject-hood with respect to the impacts of geographical processes; integrative thinking ...

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examine how tutors respond to the affective and emotional geographies that arise during international fieldwork which also affect perceptions of "place" using the innovative strategy of student-led teaching of peers.
Abstract: The benefits and challenges of international fieldwork are well rehearsed. However, understanding of students’ affective experiences during fieldwork is less well developed. Little examination has been given to how tutors respond to the affective and emotional geographies that arise during international fieldwork which also affect perceptions of “place”. Using the innovative strategy of student-led teaching of peers, this paper examines how, firstly, the emotional geographies on international fieldwork can be identified and, secondly, how tutors can respond with appropriate teaching and learning strategies to enhance the fieldwork experience of students in terms of their personal and scholarly development. Based on field courses to Barcelona, Spain, we analyse a range of media from video and oral interviews, field notebooks and reflective essays to reveal students’ perceptions and emotions of participating in international fieldwork. Most revealing are the themes and issues raised by more “immediate” reflection undertaken in-the-field compared to the more “refined” and considered reflexivity completed after the fieldtrip. Such understandings of the emotional geographies can enable appropriate teaching and learning strategies to be employed.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors argue that teaching from a qualitative GIS framework can effectively communicate the fundamentals of modern spatial theory, drawing from field experiences and deliverables across four terms.
Abstract: As social and postmodern ontologies continue to shape our definition of space, undergraduate instructors have struggled to incorporate these paradigms in the geography classroom. Recent research suggests that practical applications using field work, qualitative research, and geographic information science can augment students’ understanding of these spatial ontologies. Qualitative GIS holds promise as a means to integrate these methods in geographic education, yet there are no signs to date that the methodology has transitioned from research to teaching. This paper details our attempt to incorporate qualitative GIS into an undergraduate urban field studies course in lieu of a strictly lab-based GIS assignment. We outline our approach before discussing students’ engagement with the assignment in greater depth. Drawing from field experiences and deliverables across four terms, we argue that teaching from a qualitative GIS framework can effectively communicate the fundamentals of modern spatial theor...

TL;DR: In this article, the authors explore the significance of students' materiality of accommodation as a factor that shapes and shapes and is in turn shaped by students' qualitative and experiential experiences of living and studying.
Abstract: This paper is an initial exploration of the significance of students’ accommodation as spaces for learning In interviews, students of Geography and Planning discuss the spatiality of studying, and how their student housing features in this The diversity of student living and studying emerges clearly Yet there are some commonalities, notably the significance of the materiality of accommodation as a factor that shapes and is in turn shaped by students’ agency Their accounts underline the ways they seek to shape key aspects of their lives, and the reflective, learning, approach many take to this task The paper concludes by drawing out implications for university tutors and lecturers It also suggests avenues for further research

TL;DR: In this article, the authors suggest that a range of actors and contingencies are involved in journeying toward a more caring collective culture, in which the assembled actors are not only'students' and'staff' but also bodies, technologies, and obje...
Abstract: Completing a PhD is difficult. Add a major earthquake sequence and general stress levels become much higher. Caring for some of the nonacademic needs of doctoral scholars in this environment becomes critical to their scholarly success. Yet academic supervisors, who are in the same challenging environment, may already be stretched to capacity. How then do we increase care for doctoral scholars? While it has been shown elsewhere that supportive and interactive department cultures reduce attrition rates, little work has been done on how exactly departments might create these supportive environments: the focus is generally on the individual actions of supervisors, or the individual quality of students admitted. We suggest that a range of actors and contingencies are involved in journeying toward a more caring collective culture. We direct attention to the hybridity of an emerging ‘caring collective’, in which the assembled actors are not only ‘students’ and ‘staff’, but also bodies, technologies, obje...

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated the effects of a project-based community participation course in which students chose research topics relevant to a local community and undertook the following projects: (1) creating a virtual 3D model of a local government office, (2) creating interactive digitized versions of mountain trails using geotourism, (3) determining optimal locations for trash recycling bins using network analysis and (4) assessing the water quality of local river
Abstract: The paper investigates the effects of a project-based community participation course in which students chose research topics relevant to a local community Specifically, the students undertook the following projects: (1) creating a virtual 3D model of a local government office, (2) creating interactive digitized versions of mountain trails using geotourism, (3) determining optimal locations for trash recycling bins using network analysis, and (4) assessing the water quality of a local river Geographic information technologies, such as GIS and Google Earth, were employed as analytical and visualization tools The answers to a questionnaire, course evaluations, reflective journals, and interviews found that participants positively evaluated their learning experiences In addition, the projects received favorable reviews from community members and professional geographers

Abstract: This is the second of two Directions articles, which together offer guidance to help you gain the maximum benefit from participating in institutional and national multi-disciplinary undergraduate research conferences. The article focuses on how to make the most of these excellent opportunities when you are participating. To do this, you need to understand the importance of networking and engaging with the full conference programme. You also need to be able to identify and action the principles of effective research communication. This paper will provide you with the information you need to work through this process.
