5 – Mechanical Properties

TLDR
In this paper, the authors review different mechanical properties of PNCs and how these properties are related to the structure of the nanocomposites, and discuss the possibility of significant improvements in inherent mechanical properties.
Abstract
In recent years, the understanding of the basic physical relationships between the nanoscale structure and the macroscale properties of PNCs has received considerable attention. The designing of nanocomposites with only the desired properties requires precise control of the dispersed structure of the silicate platelets in the polymer matrix, interactions between the matrix and silicate layers, and molecular ordering. The nanoscale dispersion of silicate layers in the polymer matrix offers the possibility of significant improvements in inherent mechanical properties of polymer matrix. This chapter critically reviews different mechanical properties of PNCs and how these properties are related to the structure of the nanocomposites.

Average stress in matrix and average elastic energy of materials with misfitting inclusions

TL;DR: In this paper, a method of calculating the average internal stress in the matrix of a material containing inclusions with transformation strain is presented. But the authors do not consider the effects of the interaction among the inclusions and of the presence of the free boundary.
